8. Credit of Discovery The foundations for imaging using magnetic resonance were laid in 1946 by Bloch and Purcell; Bloch at Stanford, studying liquids, and Purcell at Harvard, in solids. Though they received Nobel prizes for their discovery, it was not until 1973 that nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to generate images.
