2. What is Google Scholar?
• It is a free web search engine that indexes scholarly publications
from many disciplines.This means you are searching a range of
topics all at once, and you will get different search results.
• Much of the content is available in full-text
• It allows easy access to published and peer-reviewed articles
• Easy to navigate in the familiar Google format
• Results are ranked by how relevant they are to the search query
3. How is Google Scholar different from a standard Google search?
• Google searches theWeb and retrieves any results that match your
query
• So, you may get some academic results, but most likely the first
result will be a Wikipedia article, and subsequent results could be
from just about any source
• Google Scholar filters your search results to only find scholarly journal
articles and books
4. Is Google Scholar credible?
• Google Scholar gives you books, journals, and articles
published by experts in their field
• You can see how many other scholars have cited a particular
source, and gauge the visibility and influence of scholarly
publications
• Citation metrics are a good measure of impact, and how
reliable the source is
• Results never includeWikipedia articles

7. How do I get the articles I found in Google Scholar?
• Click on the article to see if you can link directly to it
• Some of the articles on Google Scholar are on publishers’ databases and
are restricted to subscribers. UNC students can access many of them.
The first thing you should do is tell Google Scholar
you are affiliated with UNC – CH, so it can provide
links directly to the Library’s E-Journals.

• Citation chaining using the “cited by” feature
• “Advanced Search” allows you to search within a particular
journal, time period or discipline
• You can import your Google Scholar Search results into
RefWorks, or other citation manager
• If the article or book is not in the UNC collection, you may be able
to interlibrary loan it

• You can’t rely on Google Scholar alone, but it’s a good place to start
• Pay attention to the credibility of the source – consider bias, authority
and currency – regardless of where the material is from
