- My learning styles, according to the survey, showed that I am a very visual learner (9), very sensing (7), and in the middle for active (3) and global (1). I find that these correlate to my studying preferences. I excel in classes where I can see everything that I am doing and understand It organically rather than trying to picture it in my mind. Charts and diagrams stick out rather than a lecture because I can place exactly where the fact goes and have a visual representation. My sensing level was also not surprising, as I hate hypotheticals in learning situations. Using concrete information is key to my own understanding of a concept. I think my learning preferences have changed only slightly, maybe now I would score a higher active level. This class helped show me how to utilize my preferences for learning and take advantage of my own styles to improve my learning as best as I can. When I first took the learning preferences survey my results where the following: reflective (1), sensing (7), verbal (9), sequential (3). This seemed to fit my learning style well. I had know that I tend to lean toward verbal learning and preferred to do things in sequential order. Sensing also seemed to fit me very well.I would much rather learn factual material than abstractly. Hands-on work is one of the best ways for me to learn. I understand concepts in explanation, but if I want to master it quickly the best way is for me to do it myself. As we come to the end of class, I have found that I haven't seen much change in my learning style. I do think that the verbal is a little bit too heavy to one side. I think visual learning is a tool that I like to utilize in my learning, despite preferring verbal learning.
- Learning Preferences and the scales that go along with them help people, especially students, understand their thinking and how there are different styles to learning, not simply just the one way everyone is taught in school. Knowing there are differences and different strategies to maximize learning capabilities will help anyone achieve as much as possible. Understanding one’s personal learning preferences allows individuals to craft learning plans that will improve their overall learning. If a person is having a difficult time understanding the material of a class knowing the types of learning that they prefer can help them to absorb the knowledge in a way more useful to them individually.
- At the beginning of class, I chose to be a Learning Warrior in order to increase my knowledge about the technologies available to me that would improve my learning for this semester. I believe I was somewhat successful in the mobile category of Learning Warrior. I gained knowledge about a particular iPad/iPhone app that helped me organize my courses and homework load better than I have before. This led me to research other apps that could be helpful in the future and through one of the activities during the iPad section, I found the flashcard app to be particularly helpful in studying for science classes. Many of the test questions are based on definitions and being able to carry these “flashcards” with me wherever I go allowed me to study whenever I had a free moment. Knowing there are an abundance of apps available for any given issue will help me in other areas of my life as well. In the mobile aspect, I believe I succeeded as a Learning Warrior! At the beginning of class, I chose the Learning Warrior pathway. I wanted to improve my own learning and discover technology that would help me to accomplish my goal. I think over the semester I did gain some knowledge that was useful to me. I learned more about applications which I could utilize on my phone to improve my learning at home and one the go. I also discovered many ways to better organize my time and resources to provide myself with the most efficient and effective way to learn. I think this pathway helped me to improve my studying and understanding of not only materials presented in this class, but all of my other classes this semester. This was the best pathway for me to choose because I needed to develop better ways to focus and improve the way that I learned. I did not change my pathway over the course of the semester because this pathway helped me to improve toward my learning goal.
- As both of us are Learning Warriors, we were looking to get a deeper understanding about the mobile technologies available. Both of us feel that the iPads and Tablets section was the most helpful. Apps on the go were convenient and, for the most part, easy to use. Constant availability, through our iPhones or iPads, allowed us to consistently study as well as help us keep track of what topics we had trouble with and needed further explanations and time devoted to it. Other useful activities for mobile learning include podcasts and the section on iPods. These activities helped us to understand how iPods and mp3 players could be utilized for not just music, but learning as well. Being able to find lectures and lessons to take with us on the go helped not only in the classes we are currently enrolled in, but also in the pursuit of knowledge outside of what was demanded in class.
- The iPods and mp3 players technology quest was interesting to explore because in doing so, I found new, creative ways to learn that I had not expected. The language lessons were particularly interesting and made me feel confident in my pronunciation of each word rather than reading the word and stumbling over it as I would if I saw it in a book. These activities stimulated my active learning style as I was repeating the words out loud instead of reading them. Actively engaging in these pseudo-conversations with the speaker allowed me the opportunity to simulate real-life conversations with the phrases that they gave. Other strategies accommodate my visual learning style but this foreign language centered strategy does not. The Technology Quest that helped me the most was iPads and Tablets. The applications that we explored in this quest helped me to better organize my life and learning. I loved using the scheduling applications because as a verbal and sequential learner, lists and planners really help me to organize tasks and projects. Being able to plan out school work and appointments on my phone with reminders and alerts was very useful because I always have my phone with me and I was able to sync it to my computer later. I could also make flash cards that would be with me as long as my phone was, and flash cards are very helpful for my verbal learning style. I think the flashcards were also useful for my sensing learning style because they help me to retain facts. Overall mobile technology helps to accommodate the different learning styles because it offers a variety of different tools that can be used to enhance learning within each style .
- We found iPads and Tablets to be the technology that interested us the most. As Apple users, we were excited to explore applications that could help us improve our learning, as well as, our knowledge of one of our favorite products. The iPods and mp3 section was the most surprising. Learning how to transport more than just music with our iPods was surprisingly helpful to our greater learning. I found Podcasts to be the least helpful as a learning tool as it was just a lecture without any of the visual cues that you get through a screencast or an in-class lecture. Focusing on the voice is difficult and makes it harder to grasp the concepts and create the picture of the information in my mind. We would like to explore more iPad and Tablet apps that can be helpful to us to maximize the potential of our Apple products as well as our own learning. The apps through the iPads and Tablets were the best for my visual preference. They utilized the sensing preference as well because it was all one picture in each app and one scenario that was realistic to the coursework. Each image and/or flashcard the apps would give were all real problems I would be facing on a test in that class. I also found the iPads and Tablets section to be the most useful for my learning styles. The organization they provided helped my verbal and sequential learning through the utilization of lists. Study tools such as flashcards helped my verbal and sensing learning styles and being able to record lectures and take notes through certain apps helped my verbal, sensing and sequential learning preferences. Together, both of us are very different learners so we took away different concepts from each technology.
- Now that this class is over, we will continue to utilize the apps we have discovered through this course as well as continue to search for more that will be beneficial to studying. It is now finals time so staying on top of our coursework and studying is essential to success. Beyond school work, these mobile technologies are useful in scheduling appointments, work obligations, reminders, and managing an overall calendar for our lives. They can also be utilized in learning new languages for work or vacation. Mobile technologies can be used to provide helpful refreshers on subjects learned in school that can be applicable on the job. Learning through these mobile technologies will continue through the apps we have already utilized as well as those we have not yet discovered. When outside of school, the scheduling apps will be the most helpful as it will help prioritize tasks and make sure everything reaches completion. These apps serve as our own personal assistants! Beyond learning, mobile technologies such as podcasts can be used to keep up-to-date on world news, entertainment, and politics. Mobile technologies can also be used for gameplay, socializing, and networking. I will most likely avoid podcasts because I find them boring, even though they can be helpful. I do not really have any mobile technologies that I plan to avoid. Each have their own uses and this class has allowed us to become comfortable with these technologies that we were unaware of their potential before.
