2. Throughout the different stages of my media
product I had to use a variety of software's
and social media sites so that my overall
product was successful and so that it could
be completed professionally. These
software’s were crucial in my research and
planning stages for the reason I could look at
how music videos were
constructed, especially in my own genre and
what the typical codes and conventions were
so that I could incorporate them into my own
video. I also found this useful as google
pointed me to the stereotypes as are often
associated with rap music and in my video I
could either go against these stereotypes or
go with them
Social media sites such as
facebook, twitter and YouTube
were very important in the sense
that it helped with the distribution
and promotion aspects of my
music video
3. Research:
To find a song that would suit me and my media
product, I listened to different artists and the songs
they’ve produced over the years to get a feel of the
amount of work that I would need to put in my work. The
internet and especially YouTube provided me with the
necessary information which I needed to collect as data
for my research; YouTube was also the place where I got
the song from. This is the process of cross-media
convergence whereby I am able to watch videos, play
music and download from one source.
Google was another source which was at my disposal. I
used Google to search for pictures of my artist
(Chipmunk), information about him and the song lyrics so
I could give it to my actor to memorize. I also used Google
to look at different cd covers to help me decided which
one I could recreate for my own project.
The internet on my phone was also useful at times to
me research things on the go. If I wasn’t near a computer
my phone allowed me to search up information quickly
and post new things on my blog.
Music channels were also useful in my research (and
even planning) stages because channels such as MTV
provided me with music videos with differnet genres and
having watched a few of them I was got some initial ideas
about what to include in my own video.
4. Blogger – Planning and Research
I used blogger a lot in my project to write about all the work I
had done throughout my media project. Blogger was very easy
to use and it good in helping keep track of the progress I was
making throughout the different stages of my coursework.
Blogger had the ability to embed pictures and pictures to show
where I was getting my ideas and inspirations from.
I was also able to insert planning documents such
questionnaires and audience feedback in the form of pie charts
and bar graphs.
Blogger was like a little diary which I used to keep information
stored and it couldn’t get deleted unlike PowerPoint which was
prone to being deleted by accident.
5. Microsoft Office – Planning and
Research
I used Microsoft word to write up my risk assessment. I also used
it so that I could copy and paste the lyrics on it so that I could
print it out and give it to the actors so they knew what to say
when they were singing the song. I printed out the lyrics for
different reasons; 1) so that I could make notes about what I
wanted to film and what location I was going to use to film a
particular verse. 2) so that the character could have something to
refer to if he forgot the lyrics on set.
After I got a relatively small audience to give me feedback on my
music video I gave them a questionnaire to fill out in respect of
the music video they had just watched. I used Microsoft Excel
when I was doing the questionnaire to convert the answers into a
pie chart and to tally the number of people who ticked the same
question.
6. USB, Mobile Phones, Laptop, PC – Planning and
Research
My phone was very helpful during the planning and research stages
because it allowed me to keep everything organised and I made an
alarm and set particular dates on my calendar so I know what days I
was going to shoot and where I was going.
I was able to (with the 5 megapixel camera) take pictures of the
locations which I was going to use to shoot my music video. As it was
an iPhone 4 it was easy for me to put the pictures straight on my blog
as I had the ‘blogger’ app.
I used my laptop and PC when I was at home to continue with my
planning and research on the internet. I was able to go listen and
watch music videos on YouTube from my genre (Hip-Hop); I was also
able to use google to find out additional information on the artist or
my project overall, I was also able to use Chipmunk’s official website.
7. Construction
In the construction stage of my project, a normal PC was used to
operate the various editing software’s needed to complete my
coursework to a professional standard. A HD Cannon (LEGRIA
HFR306) was the camera that I used to film my music video. Along
with the camera, I also used a tripod to hold the camera in place so
that it gave some of the scenes steady look. However, rap music uses
a lot of hand held camera work and tracking shots which can be
seen my own music video. After filming had taken place, I took the
footage from the SD card and placed it in the computer so I could
take the clips and edit them in Adobe Premiere Elements. This is
when I put all the clips on the time where I was able to cut and
delete any footage which wasn’t needed. I added effects and
transitions for the reason that it made the video look more
interesting, grab the audiences attention and because many hip-hop
videos uses effects and transitions which I wanted to replicate in my
own music video. Most importantly, I matched the filming to the
actual song so that Randy was in time with the official song.
I also used Adobe Photoshop to make the digipack and the advert to
promote the entire song when it was completed. The camera on my
iphone was very useful as I could take pictures and instantly upload
them on to my blog.
8. Editing – Premiere Elements &
Photoshop
This is a snapshot of the
timeline. What it shows are
the clips on the top half and
the song on the bottom.
In order to complete my project, I had to edit all the clips together and put the
song in the background to fully turn it into a music video. The editing software I
used was called Adobe Premiere Elements. This software was timeline based and
it supported many video editing cards and plug-ins for accelerated processing,
additional file format and video/audio effects. Starting with the version in CS5, it
is a 64-bit application that can be used for windows PC and Apple Macs.
I used Photoshop so that I could edit the pictures which was going on my album
cover and advert. Photoshop files also has the ability to be opened directly from
Premiere and vice-versa. This was useful because it meant that I could
incorporate pictures from Photoshop and put them directly on my Premiere
timeline if I wanted to.
12. Evaluation - Blogger
o Blogger was used to record evidence of my
filming, editing and research and planning activities that
was done throughout the stages of completing my overall
product.
o Blogger was easy to access on my school
computer, home computer, personal laptop and on my
iPhone which meant that I was always able to keep up to
date with my project.
o Keeping my blog up to date every step of the way was
important because it showed how much progress I was
making.
o I used my blog to insert pictures and video to add visual
elements to my work so that people could see what I was
doing and because text alone was boring.
o I wrote everything in detail so that it was clear for
anyone who was reading it to understand what I was
talking about and why I chose to do the things I did.
o It was fairly easy to use which meant that I didn’t have to
waste time trying to figure out how it works. Creating posts
and publishing them was straight forward.
13. Evaluation – Facebook & Twitter
In order to get feedback from my target audience, I decided to
put the video on the most popular social networking sites in the
world; known as Facebook and Twitter.
Facebook allowed me to post the video on the facebook
timeline and share it with my online friends. They then had the
opportunity to comment, like and share the video again if they
wanted to. Sharing it meant that more people will be able to see
the video, making it more popular. I took this approach as this is
what real artists will do to promote their song or album.
Due to the facebook’s popularity, I was able to share statuses
about the video – hyping it up for people who didn’t get to the see
the video when I first posted it. I also sent numerous amount of
private messages to people who were not officially online but had
a phone so they could watch it on there. I done this so that I could
get back a lot of feedback.
I used twitter to ‘tweet’ about the video so that my
followers, who live all over the world, could see it and give me
feedback. Twitter was also useful because if they song became
popular, it could start trending meaning that a lot more people
14. Evaluation – YouTube
I posted the video on YouTube so that everyone who wanted to see it had easy access to it.
Simply by typing the name of the song on YouTube they could find it. If people couldn’t find it
on facebook or twitter because other people updated their status and my video got pushed to
the bottom of the timeline, then they could watch it on YouTube as much as they wanted to.
This is the views count. It
shows how many times
the video has been
watched.
This is the
amount of times
it has been liked
or disliked
These are the comments which were
made by people. Some comments
many be negative or positive
depending on how much people like
the video.
15. Evaluation – Slideshare/PowerPoint
Another creative element which I added to my overall media project was the
fact that I used PowerPoint presentations to map out all visual elements and
then in order for me to put it on my blog I had to convert it into a slideshare
document. They were both easy to use and it didn’t take any effort to upload
and put it on my blog. Decided to use slideshare to make it look different
from my other posts.
