Sleep and Dreams
Big Question
Why do humans need to sleep?
What would happen if you went
without sleep for an extended period
of time?
Why do we
sleep???
People need sleep to help revive the tired body
To build up resistance to infection
Helps us recover from stress
When you go without sleep you can
become irritable, lose focus, and have
memory loss
Sleep Problems
Insomnia
Nightmares
Night Terrors (extreme panic)
Sleepwalking
Sleep Apnea (irregular breathing)
Narcolepsy (sleep attacks*, sleepiness)
Are you sleep deprived?
Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes excessive
sleepiness and frequent daytime sleep attacks.
Narcolepsy is a nervous system disorder.
Symptoms usually first occur during ages 15 to 30.
There is no known cure for narcolepsy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myaonferplk
Sleep Cycle
NREM sleep: non-rapid eye movement
“quiet sleep” slow, regular breathing, absence of body
movement, slow, regular brain activity
REM sleep: A stage in the normal sleep cycle during
which dreams occur
The body undergoes marked changes including
rapid eye movement, loss of reflexes, and
increased pulse rate and brain activity.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0DJzFDOgzg
NREM sleep is divided into four stages
STAGE ONE
STAGE TWO
STAGE THREE
STAGE FOUR
REM Sleep
Sleep Cycle
Best time to go to bed…

Many people believe that dreams conceal
hidden symbols or messages
Dreams
A sequence of images, sounds and
feelings experienced while sleeping
Strongly associated with rapid eye
movement (REM) sleep
The contents and biological purposes of dreams are
not fully understood, though they have been a
topic of speculation and interest throughout
recorded history.

Sleep & DreamFacts
One-third of your life is spent sleeping.
In an average lifetime, you would have spent a total
of about six years of it dreaming. That is more than
2,100 days spent in a different realm!
Everybody dreams. EVERYBODY! Simply because
you do not remember your dream does not mean
that you do not dream. In fact, you have several
dreams during a normal night of sleep.
Dreams are indispensable. A lack of dream activity
may imply some protein deficiency or a personality
disorder.
On average, you can dream anywhere from one to
two hours every night. Moreover, you can have four
to seven dreams in one night.
Blind people do dream. Sound, touch, and smell
become hypersensitive for the blind and their dreams
are based on these senses.
Five minutes after the end of the dream, half the
content is forgotten. After ten minutes, 90% is lost.
Studies have shown that your brain waves are more
active when you are dreaming than when we are
awake.
Toddlers do not dream about themselves. They do not
appear in their own dreams until the age of 3 or 4.
If you are snoring, then you cannot be dreaming.
In a poll, 67% of Americans have experienced Deja Vu in
their dreams, occurring more often in females than males.
According to a research study, the most common setting for
dreams is your own house.
What Are Dreams?
Psychologists and brain scientists
have new answers to an age-old
question.
