More Advice for Teachers 9. Establish a routine for students as they enter and leave the classroom.  10. Always make positive statements. 11. Use motivators to encourage good behavior.  Rewards can be free or talk time.  12. Keep moving, always be moving around the room. 13. Maintain high levels of student involvement, active learning reduces the time students have to misbehave. 14. Know your students’ names. 15. Give the impression of being with every student at all times.  16. Accurately target misbehaving students.  Don’t punish the whole class for misdeeds on one or two students. 17. Enforce fair consequences for misbehavior. 18. Don’t openly compare one student to another. 19. Apologize if you make a mistake. 20. Start each day with a clean slate, what happened yesterday stays there. 21. Avoid situations which force students to save face, you will end up the loser.

Class Room Management Exercise 10 min -  In groups of 3 or 4 you will create  - no more than 5 rules - share with the class  - avoid rules such as “be nice”.  A good goal but too vague to serve as  a rule 10 min -  come up with 1 idea for classroom management, share with class  10 min – come up with  - 1 bell work idea - 1 idea on how to make the parents your ally - 1 way to keep students involved Activity  – Using a piece of construction paper and markers, in your choice of color, create a sign to illustrate your personal classroom rules.

  • 3. More Advice for Teachers 9. Establish a routine for students as they enter and leave the classroom. 10. Always make positive statements. 11. Use motivators to encourage good behavior. Rewards can be free or talk time. 12. Keep moving, always be moving around the room. 13. Maintain high levels of student involvement, active learning reduces the time students have to misbehave. 14. Know your students’ names. 15. Give the impression of being with every student at all times. 16. Accurately target misbehaving students. Don’t punish the whole class for misdeeds on one or two students. 17. Enforce fair consequences for misbehavior. 18. Don’t openly compare one student to another. 19. Apologize if you make a mistake. 20. Start each day with a clean slate, what happened yesterday stays there. 21. Avoid situations which force students to save face, you will end up the loser.

A good goal but too vague to serve as a rule 10 min - come up with 1 idea for classroom management, share with class 10 min – come up with - 1 bell work idea - 1 idea on how to make the parents your ally - 1 way to keep students involved Activity – Using a piece of construction paper and markers, in your choice of color, create a sign to illustrate your personal classroom rules.
