Refrigerator Exercise Take down list after the week and prioritize names into three groups:   	A - People who work in your field or know you well 	B - People who know you less well or work in other fields 	C - Casual acquaintances
Elevator Speech A 30 second to 2 minute speech about who you  are, what makes you unique, and the benefits you can provide to an organization

Developing Your Profile Upload a professional/friendly photo of yourself Your headline should include what position you are seeking or your current job title Turn on public profile:  This provides you with a link you can place on your resume for employers to view your profile
Developing Your Profile Summary  Recommendations Set up your contact settings Join relevant groups
Developing Contacts   Upload your email address book Use the Colleagues or Classmates features  Connect with group members
Developing Contacts  Invite one contact at a time by entering his or her name and email address using the "Add Connections" link on the home page Invite someone by clicking on the "Add ___ to your Network" link found on the right side of the member's Profile. Using this avenue allows you to send a personal note in the Invitation message.

Resumes The primary purpose of a resume is to obtain an interview If you are not getting interviews, you may want to rethink your resume
Resumes Employers spend an average of 40 seconds reviewing each resume Provide them with a compelling reason to review your credentials
Resume Format 1-2 complete pages, 1 inch margins Use headings for each section, usually use a 14 pt -16 pt font  No smaller than 11 pt font for all other content on resume Use underlining, bullets and bolding  Make effective use of white space/no paragraphs
Resume Format Align all dates on the far right hand side of the page Do not abbreviate, other than state abbreviations Use functional resume if you are changing career fields Be consistent in format

Objective Indicates specific position for which you are applying Simple, clear, and concise Does not need to be a complete sentence (usually a short, one-line phrase) Take advantage of information from the job advertisement (use key words in your objective)
Education What/Where/When Highest level of education attained Major/Minor GPA, if 3.0 or higher
Work Experience This section is the single most important place to sell yourself to a potential employer Stick to the What/Where/When format Always use key words/phrases that clearly and briefly articulate your experiences The skills you include on your resume should be connected to the skills required in the job you are seeking

  • 42. STAR Technique Situation/Task – Describe a specific situation you were in or task you needed to accomplish Action – Describe action you took Result – What happened? What did you learn? What did you accomplish?
  • 43. How to prepare for a behavioral interview Research company website/job posting What skills are they looking for? Identify past experiences that demonstrate those skills and develop stories based on STAR Use examples from internships, classes, community service, hobbies and work experience

How to prepare for a behavioral interview Vary your examples; don't take them all from one area of your life Use recent examples: Some companies specify that candidates give examples of behaviors demonstrated within the last year Try to quantify your results Answers are typically 3-5 minutes in length
  • 45. How to prepare for a behavioral interview Half of your examples should be totally positive, such as accomplishments or meeting goals Half should address situations that started out negatively, but ended up positively Prepare 6 to 8 examples that can be adapted to a variety of questions
