Analyze Learners
This lesson is prepared for students in a 4th grade class. This class has a total of 20 students. There are 11
girls and 9 boys. There are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish students, and 2 African Americans.
State Objectives
1. 4th grade students will identify the culture or country to which each holiday we study belongs as
well as some of the traditions associated with that holiday by listening to storybooks, watching
videos, tasting different foods, playing a game and completing worksheets with 95% accuracy by
the end of the week.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Books: The teacher will use picture books to introduce each holiday to the students.
Videos: The students will watch videos to further their understanding of each holiday.
Foods: The teacher will prepare different foods enjoyed by other cultures during certain holidays and
students will get to sample the different foods.
Game: When studying the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, students will play the dreidel game, which is
popular among Jewish boys and girls.
Utilize Materials
Preview Materials: The teacher will read each book and watch each video to ensure they are appropriate
and accurately depict the various holidays.
Prepare Materials: The teacher will make sure the books are already in the classroom and that the videos
will play without any trouble. She will make the food at home and bring it in each dish on the day it is to
be studied. The teacher will make a list dividing the students into groups for the game and make sure she
has enough dreidels and copies of the game instructions for each group.
Prepare the Environment: The classroom is already set up so that each student can see the teacher as she
presents the information. The teacher will make sure she has a working TV and DVD player in her
classroom and that it is located where all of the students can see it.
Kelly Dunham
Prepare the Learners: The teacher will prepare the learners by guiding a discussion of their favorite
holidays and holiday traditions.
Provide the Learning Experience: The teacher will be excited about what she is teaching so that she might
inspire excitement in her students.
Require Learner Participation
Students are encouraged to ask questions at any time throughout the lesson. All students will participate
in their groups by playing the game. At the end of the week, students will write a reflection paper
describing one of the holidays studied during the week.
Evaluate and Revise
Students will be evaluated on their final reflection paper at the end of the week. Students must display a
general understanding of the holiday.
