3. Katniss wakes up, fingers stretched, seeking the warmth of her
younger sister, Prim's warmth, only to discover she climbed in with
their mother—perhaps of bad dreams—for it was the day of the
reaping.

woods where Gale awaits. After feasting on exchanged bakery bread and
Prim's gift to Katniss: a chunk of goat cheese, they swing by the mayor's

5. Madge, the daughter of the mayor of District 12, opens the door and hands the
money for the strawberries. Katniss and Prim attend the reaping that day, only to
then be shocked by the picking of Prim, when Effie Trinket pulls out a name from
the glass ball.

6. “I volunteer as tribute” Katniss manages to cry. Screaming Prim is lifted aside by
Gale, allowing Katniss to steel herself and steel herself as she makes her way up on
stage. The boy whom is selected onto the stage is Peeta Mellark, whom she
recognizes for giving her plentiful bread years ago. Peeta and Katniss shake hands
and the anthem of Panem plays.
