Analysis Of On Death Row, But Is He Innocent
In On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? Nicholas Kristof explores the position that the evidence that
convicted Kevin Cooper, an inmate on death row in San Quentin State Prison, may be unreliable. In
1983, a California professor drove to his neighbor's house to pick up his eleven–year–old son. He
peered through the window to find the house in a state of bloody disarray. Amongst the blood was
the bodies of his neighbor's family and the lifeless body of his son. Additionally, the professor
Joshua Ryen who was stabbed multiple times, but still clinging to life. Kristof highlights the
overwhelming evidence of police tampering with evidence that sent Kevin Cooper to death row.
Additionally, Kristof suggests evidence as to Cooper's innocence was not given proper scrutiny.
Therefore, Kristof alleges Cooper's case, particularly the evidence, should be reviewed. Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger denied this request. Although as Attorney General of California, Jerry
Brown should little interest in the case, as Governor he is currently reviewing the case.
"The fallacy of irrelevance, or ignoratio elenchi, is an argument purporting to establish a particular
conclusion, but is instead directed to proving another conclusion." Kristof potentially frames the
fallacy of ignoratio elenchi even from the title: On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? On the one hand,
the title does not commit the fallacy if framed just as written, a question. However, to the suggest
Kristof's defense equates to

Hasty Generalization
The use of the Internet has become increasingly popular in everyday activities of many Americans.
The convenience and wealth of information at hand makes it a practical tool for managing day–to–
day activities, communicating and staying in touch with friends, shopping, and many other
activities. Deborah Fallows wrote an article, The Internet and Daily Life, based on a survey and
research conducted through the Pew Research Center. Fallows indicated in the article that "88% of
online Americans say the Internet plays a role in their daily routines. The activities they identified as
most significant are communicating with family and friends and finding a wealth of information at
their fingertips." She also concluded from the survey that "64% of Internet users say their daily
routines and activities would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Russell's review indicated that Shirky's hasty generalizations resulted in broad conclusions
representing himself and/or a small minority of techie people who use the Internet daily. Russell
pointed this out as Shirky noted, "When the general public began using digital networks, the idea
that everyone would contribute something to the public sphere was assumed to be contradictory to
nature." Russell felt that Shirky's statement was more indicative of himself rather than the general
public. What evidence did he have to support the claim? Additionally, Russell did not feel that
collaboration through Internet use resulted in a significant change for society. Russell noted, "The
last time I checked we still have to go to work every day and despite some momentary upheavals,
the Internet has become one more way for savvy large corporations to make money." Russell did
conceptualize the point that the Internet was beneficial but that it did not impact society in ways that

Hasty Generalization Fallacy
Fallacies are an error in reasoning, a fault in one's argument that does not have the correct evidence
or facts. Fallacies are something that we commit since we were young kids, arguing with your
brothers or sisters and into our adulthood arguing with our spouse or trying to make a point in our
career fields. Many of us even commit these fallacies without realizing what we are doing, it is a
learning progress for many to realize and understand when we are using fallacy and trigger our brain
to think in a different way to avoid the trickiness of fallacies. One fallacy that could be tricky and
easy to use daily would be Hasty Generalizations, which is a fallacy that is based on assumption,
which we all know we have done at some point in our lives and can see how easy it could be to use
as an automatic reaction.
Hasty Generalization according to UNC is "Making assumption about a whole group or range of
cases based on a sample that is inadequate stereotypes about people" When committing a Hasty
Generalization fallacy, you are assuming a conclusion or assuming that one thing is the same as all
of them in a group without knowing the proper facts to back up why your conclusion is correct. You
take your own perspective on a subject and assume you know it all without doing the proper
research to prove to someone else that you do actually know it all. During a debate with a colleague
or just a person in your family you both have had a different experience so you both are convincing

Examples Of Hasty Generalization
I. Pick three of these fallacies and write an example of each one. 1. Hasty Generalization: "I've met
two individuals in Viet Nam in this way, and they were both pleasant to me. Thus, all individuals I
will meet in Viet Nam will be decent to me." In any Hasty Generalization the key blunder is to
overestimate the quality of a contention that depends on too little a specimen for the suggested
certainty level or mistake edge. In this contention about Viet Nam, utilizing "all" in the conclusion
suggests zero blunder edge. With zero blunder edge you'd have to test each and every individual in
Viet Nam, not only two individuals. 2. Post hoc ergo propter hoc: "I ate in that Vietnamese

What was your favorite novel in high school? Why? When I was in Viet Nam, my most loved books

Logical Fallacies In Carleen Turner's Letter
Logical Fallacies: Carleen Turner letter
In her letter, Carleen Turner is telling about her son, Brock Turner and asks the judge to be kind and
merciful to her son. It is obvious that Carleen Turner was writing the letter with the strong emotions,
and the emotions in the letter are much stronger than a logical constituent. The first logical fallacy,
begging the claim, one can see at the beginning of the letter. Carleen Turner is writing to the judge
that she want to "introduce you to my son, Brock Turner – the REAL Brock Allen Turner" (Turner
1). The emotional story of the mother who evidently will try to show her son from the better side
hardly will show the more real figure of Brock Turner than the materials of the case that shows him
from the different sides and which the judge obviously have seen. However, Carleen Turner is not
trying to prove in any way that her describing of Brock Turner is real, she just validates it within the
claim, and that undermining her argument because she is not showing the real Brock Turner but only
her view of him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

mean. That's just him – a nice guy" (Turner 2). The fact that Brock could not play a mean character
in the theater does not mean that he is a nice person. Play in the theater shows only talent and ability
of a person. This facility undermined the part of the main argument in the letter that Brock Turner is
a nice person who does not deserve punishment and being in prison. The fact that Brock Turner

Fallacies And Aspects Of Cheating In The Film : Faking The...
Cheating, also known according to the film as faking the grade, is certainly unfair to honest
students. The unfairness comes in some cases where the cheater outperforms the honest student.
Faking the Grade is a film that portrays cheating as something immoral and that it puts the honest
people at a disadvantage whether it is during school/university or throughout their lives. Children
nowadays are depending on the many forms of cheating to be successful. According to Schmuley
Boteach, however, cheating is something to blame on the parents and not the children because that is
where it starts (Faking the Grade, web). In this paper I analyze arguments made in the film by
specifically focusing on the generalizations made and connecting them to the different fallacies and
principles of argumentation that relate to hasty generalizations. First, I discuss a hasty generalization
that was introduced in the film at the beginning which led for the remaining arguments of the film to
be weaker and narrowed down. Then, I discuss Boteach's argument which concludes that parents are
the main fault for kids cheating and I mention the variety of different fallacies committed in that
argument.
The generalizations made in this film are very clear. The narrator starts off the film by bringing up a
study made in Canada where half of the undergraduates admitted to cheating in university and over
three quarters admitted they cheated in high school (Faking the Grade, web). We can tell from the

Stereotypes, Stereotyping, And Stereotyping
Stereotypes
Most people have encountered stereotypical behavior, either by being stereotyped or by stereotyping
a particular group of individuals themselves. This simplistic or overstated vague notion may occur
consciously or unconsciously depending on a person's perspective, his or her exposures to diverse
cultures, as well as immediate social influences. Moreover, stereotyping has the potential to result in
negative generalizations that may progenerate displaced anger towards scapegoats; however, may
also result in inflated positive perceptions of a specific group of individuals. Stereotyping, most
commonly, is geared towards a specific race, culture, gender.
A popular positive perception that is geared towards the Black race is that individuals from this
group are superior athletes. On the other hand, negative statements that, to a certain extent,
contradict the first remark is that all Blacks are lazy. There are many exceptional African–American
athletes in the NBA and WNBA, for example; however, that does not indicate that all Blacks are
good in all sports, or in sports in general, just as not all Whites are good in baseball or soccer just
because these major leagues are dominated by Whites. Alternatively, the African–American
population is being stigmatized as being lazy, which according to Laura Green, is due to the
assumption that Blacks abuse the welfare system. In other words, African–Americans are being
stereotyped as welfare capitalists in order to be

Hasty Generalization Fallacy Examples
The Hasty Generalization fallacy is an inductive generalization, wherein a sample of the population
is responsible for the conclusion representing the entire population. A number of categories are
contained in this fallacy, including insufficient statistics, overgeneralization, and samples not
accurately represented. The hasty generalization fallacy is often referred to as "jumping to
conclusions" or the use of limited samples, and can be prone to instant gratification; the smaller
samples and statistics allow for a quicker result although the outcomes could be infinite.
An example of a hasty generalization fallacy would be a number of commercials that represent that

The Appeal to Tradition fallacy is based on the idea that the way things have always been done is
the right way. This fallacy has been applied to a number of situations, most recently with
technological advancements, as well as family legacies. While not as prevalent as it once was, a
number of students have attended colleges and completed degrees in fields they were not interested
in simply because the seven generations before them had; it had now become a "family tradition."
Other appeal to traditions fallacies occurred in offices around the country as computer technology
began to replace typewriters, long hand, and the Dewey decimal system. Those deemed set in their
ways had many difficulties accepting the changes and could not understand why the old ways
needed to be changed, even if it meant more efficiency. The addage, "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix
it" became one of the most used phrases, and although they tried their best to not conform,
eventually they did or they were replaced with people who would embrace the

"Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior" Critique
The article, "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior," seemed like it had completely inflamed the entire
United States due to the content that the author and Yale Law School professor, Amy Chua had
included in her writing. This Chinese mother described her parenting style as superior and all
knowing compared to the parenting style of the common Western parent which was described as
anxious and conflicted.
The article follows the structure of the chinese mothers parenting style. This parenting style can be
described as very strict, very demanding, and extremely tenacious. The reason for this is the fact that
chinese mothers are giving the child very little to almost zero say in what they want to do or ...

After she explains her points, she gets into a story about her and her seven year old daughter. She
sets the scene by telling us that her daughter is learning a new song on the piano. To make a long
story short, Chau threatened her daughter by saying she would receive no food or christmas presents
if she did not learn the song. She would not let her seven year old daughter get and use the bathroom
until she recited the song perfectly. All of a sudden, her daughter learned the song after all the long
hours of non–stop arguing and yelling and practice.
The first thing that really caught my eye was a statement by Chau saying that, "Chinese parents
understand that nothing is fun until you're good at it." (Chau 262). Many people would completely
disagree because there are plenty of things that are fun, even if you are not good at them. Someone
could love to draw or play a sport and be bad at it at the same time and that is completely okay. You
should not have to be the best at everything you do because no matter what you may be good at,
there is always someone better than you or someone that will think that they or someone else is
better than you.
Even though there are plenty of statements in this article that I disagree with, there is a few that I do
agree with. Towards the end of the article Chau makes a very valid point about self esteem: "There's

Fallacy Paper
Fallacies are committed in every state, in every city and in every neighborhood. No race or gender is
impervious to committing a fallacy. So, what is a fallacy? Patrick J. Hurley defines a fallacy as, "A
defect in an argument that consists in something other than false premises alone." These defects
result in misconception in an argument. Many times they are accidental, other times they are
committed on purpose. However, either way, fallacies can be very persuasive to the casual reader or
listener. One in particular, the false cause fallacy, is used quite often in today's society. Hurley states
that, "The fallacy of false cause occurs whenever the link between premises and conclusion depends
on some imagined causal connection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A remedy society knows as "trial and error." People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
use fallacies in almost all of their advertisements. In fact, 'Veggie Love,' a super bowl video ad by
PETA, claims that vegetarians have better sex. In the video, gorgeous women dressed in lingerie are
groping broccoli, asparagus and even a licking a pumpkin. This video commits the false cause
fallacy because it expresses that people are having great sex because they are vegetarians. In
addition, if a person wants to have great sex, they need to become a vegetarian. It is also possible
that an argument commit more than one fallacy at a time. This video also commits the hasty
generalization fallacy, because it states that if you eat vegetables you will have great sex with
gorgeous women, therefore the obvious conclusion is that all vegetarians have great sex! To tell
these two different types of fallacies apart a reader or listener must know what defines these two
types of fallacies. Because 'Veggie Love' focuses on vegetarians and great sex, and PETA claims that
there is a causal connection between the two, it can be defined as a false cause fallacy. Because the
video also claims that people who eat vegetables have great sex, we can assume that all vegetarians
have great sex which can be defined as

Analysis Of Terry Moore's Speech
Terry Moore's speech, "How to tie your shoes", was printed in May of 2011, for the use and free
viewing of the public. He discusses the reality that many people do not know that they are actually
tying their shoes incorrectly, and he shares with the audience what he has found to be the proper
way to tie one's shoes. Throughout his speech, Moore uses stories, demonstrations, and lighthearted
humor to engage the audience and deliver his message. Though simple, Moore's speech has just the
right amount of quirkiness, fun, and technicality to be memorable for most viewers. He expertly
tailors his speech to be delivered to a unique audience at the Technology Entertainment and Design
(TED). Conference in February of 2005. The audience consists of mostly wealthy scholars and
people interested in gaining knowledge and insight. Terry Moore thinks that by showing the
audience the correct way to tie their shoes, he would provide them with the quality enlightenment
that they are seeking. His speech about the proper technique of shoe tying to ensure that laces stay
tied for longer periods of time uses ethos, and his strongest writing strategy is his lighthearted and
entertaining diction. Ethos is predominately used in the speech to connect to the audience and
establish the credibility of the speaker, Terry Moore. Moore develops ethos by telling the audience a
story about when he first learned the proper way to tie his shoes. By acknowledging that for many
years he was unaware that he

What does Davis mean by interpretive obedience in his essay, Professional Responsibility: Just
Following the Rules?
Interpretive obedience is what Davis believes to be the right way of following rules in professional
ethics. Therefore, if a person can understand how to follow rules, than it is the correct way to abide
by the rules. However, Davis emphasizes that if people follow rules blindly, then they will not see
anything but that, and people will then use rules as an excuse. Which is why Davis favors
interpretive obedience because in his essay he means interpretive obedience to be the understanding
of the rule, a person to know the justification of the rule, and to carry out the action that goes along
with the justification.

Examples Of Consensus In 12 Angry Men
When someone is on trial for murder, it can be difficult for a stranger to realize that the person on
trial's life is in the hands of a small group of people. Therefore, due to jurors often being strangers, it
can be significantly difficult to put aside their biases and come to a proper consensus. In the film 12
Angry Men, the process of coming to a consensus was troubling due to Juror Three's personal bias
towards the topic. Unlike looking at the situation rationally as Juror Eight did, Juror Three brought
his emotions, personal experiences, and bias into his fallacy–riddled argument. Juror Three was
arguably the most difficult juror to convince that the boy was not guilty. Throughout the whole film,
up until the end, Juror Three stood his ground with his argument. Juror Three often disagreed with
any counterargument that Juror Eight made. Near the beginning of the film, Juror Three went off on
an off–topic tangent about his son and how he was so ashamed in his actions and how he was also a
teen. Therefore, we are able to notice the motive behind the arguments that he made. Juror Three
would often try to counter someone else's argument by stating that he knows for sure the boy is
guilty. For almost every counter argument, he would provide little to no evidence to back his claims.
In addition, the most notable trait about Juror Three's arguments is that he refuses to acknowledge
that there is, indeed, reasonable doubt. For example, despite all the information about the

What Are Stereotypes? Essay
Stereotypes are assumptions held about the characteristics of a particular group of people. These
assumptions could be due to their race, culture, country, community and religion. Women are not as
smart as men. Men are strong and do all the work. Americans are tolerant but arrogant. Girls are not
good at sports. Black people are stronger than white people. Black people are criminals. Old folks
are all very old fashioned. All blond women are dumb. Guys are messy and unclean. Girls are only
concerned about physical appearance. Women always talk too much on the phone. All Blacks are
lazy. Women are bad drivers. Muslims are terrorists. These are some famous stereotypes
representing some commonly held conventional beliefs about ... Show more content on

Clearly, there is no logic behind this stereotype. For example, if we look in the history, most of the
attacks like 9/11 are done by Muslims, so it is assumed that all Muslims are terrorists. Although it is
true that Muslims are involved in many attacks, but there are some people behind all this who try to
create violence in the name of religion and who make them do this, while Islam is not about all this.
These are just some violent people who try to do bad things in the name of religion. These violent
people exist in every religion. Due to bad act of few people, we cannot say that all Muslims are
terrorists.
Another reason for the existence of stereotypes is hasty generalizations. The concept of hasty
generalization is in close proximity with stereotypical generalizations. Hasty generalization is based
on insufficient evidence–drawing a conclusion about a population based on a sample that is not large
enough. For example, if someone is driving the car and a woman cut him off on the freeway and that
person establishes the reason that "All women are bad drivers". So, this type of assumption that the
reason for her bad driving is her gender is a stereotype. Men can also be bad drivers. It is always
thought that women are inferior to men when it comes to driving, but why? Just because they are
easily distracted? Scared to go fast? Never mind the fact that women are most often responsible for
getting all the family

Argumeative Essay 'Hasty Generalization'
When writing an argumentative essay, there are certain debate skills that different writers like to use.
However, there are also many poor choices in writing that many people make, known as fallacies.
These fallacies can damage the argument presented in ones paper, whether it is used on purpose or
not.
One big example of a fallacy is known as "Hasty Generalization". People use hasty generalization
when they make assumptions on a whole group of people, based on only a small sample. For
example, if somebody went to a Texas Roadhouse and received terrible customer service from their
waitress, and then wrote about how awful Texas Roadhouses waitresses are, he/she would be using
hasty generalization. That person would be giving his opinion of the company as a whole, based
only on one waitress at one restaurant. In an argumentative essay, your argument will not be very
strong is you are using this fallacy.
Another common fallacy, especially in marketing and commercials, is "Appeal to Authority". This
fallacy is used when somebody uses a well known person to help convince the audience of their
view. Although this trick may work in advertising,it should be avoided when writing. Just because
Joe Keery says Dominos Pizza is the best does not make it true. If, however, somebody quoted a

paper. Maybe somebody states that in 2004, crime stated increasing in New York, and Facebook also
launched in 2004, so Facebook must be the reason for the increase in crime. Although it is possible
that Facebook could have had a small role, there is no evidence or confirmation that this is

Conflict and Social Order Theory
Social OrderAccording to the social order model, society is given a set of rules to regulate people
behaviors and prevent anomie or "normlessness." Society serves the interests of all sharing, a strong
set of norms and values, though not being able to adhere to these cause people to feel out of place.
Most people accept this hierarchy as long as they see the system is fair. However, it is not fair, and
this in turn becomes visible when it comes to occupations. Young people do not apply to specific
jobs because they assume their qualifications are not well–built enough to obtain certain positions
and therefore are exploited and oppressed in the workforce.

fact here thoughts were already shaped for her by what society had previously claimed to be the "in"
style. Anne did not realize that the act of something as simple as choosing a sweater, because she

peoples actions are highly predictable and that human behaviors are the result of social causes and

Why Laptops Are Distracting America 's Future Workforce
There's no denying that technology has grown to play a major role in education and learning.
Students are using laptops, tablets, and smartphones to research, complete, and even collaborate on

both have written articles expressing their opposing opinions on technology in the classroom.
Timothy Snyder is a Professor of History at Yale University who has written five different award–

In Thomas Friedman's article, "Come the Revolution," Friedman is confident that an online–only
education program called Coursera is the solution to the problems of rising tuition and the increased
importance of education in a knowledge economy. The rhetorical strategies used by Friedman were
much more effective in comparison to Snyder's, especially his use of valid numbers, statistics, and
facts to support his claims. One example of this is in the second paragraph of Friedman's "Come the
Revolution." After introducing Andrew Ng, professor and cofounder of Coursera, and explaining the
online platform's benefits, Friedman quotes Ng to support his argument. He writes, " "I normally
teach 400 students," Ng explained, but last semester he taught 100,000 in an online course on
machine learning. "To reach that many students before," he said, I would have had to teach my
normal Stanford class for 250 years." " Friedman uses the valid numbers, statistics, and facts from
reliable authorities to support his argument.
Another rhetorical strategy that was very effective for Friedman but was ineffective in Snyder's
argument is tone. Choosing words and examples carefully for tone is important when attempting to

Deflategate: An Entire Scandal Based on Insecurity Essay
Juan–Carlos Licona
English 102
Professor Black
February 8, 2015
Insecurity or No?
When it comes to sports, a competitive mindset is key. In American football, it's hard not to win
without communication and teamwork. In the NFL playoffs of 2015, the New England Patriots beat
the Indianapolis Colts 45–7 for the AFC Championship. In a game that originally portrayed the
Patriots as an offensive force to be reckoned with, ended out to be a game that goes down in history.
After further investigation, the NFL found 11 of the Patriots' 12 footballs in the game to be
underinflated by about 2 pounds below the NFL's requirement. Now whether the allegations are
determined to be true or not, it does raise some speculation about the truth of the AFC ... Show more

Hasty generalizations draw conclusions based on too little evidence (Mauk). Not surprisingly, the
author assumes everyone who despises the fact that the Patriot's won the championship is tired of
hearing about their success. Although I grant his quasi–conservative generalization to be partly true,
I still maintain that whoever questions New England's success has a pretty good reason to believe
so. Instead of the looking at the big picture and considering both sides of the spectrum, the author
continues to back up his anti–liberal outlook as he states, "The Patriots are right to feel like they are
in the center of the crosshairs, the object of disaffection, and the target of a witch hunt. The whole
false outrage isn't about the legacy of the Patriots; it's about the legacy of those making the claims.
It's coming from those of past dynasties that are afraid that the Patriots have lapped them in the all
time rankings. It's coming from players who are so willing to overlook their own warts in order to
point out the Patriots'." Here the author not only proves to present a objectivity disguise, which fools
the audience into thinking the presented information is unbiased; but also introduces a red herring
fallacy. Red herring fallacies are deliberate attempts to change the subject. Instead of dealing with
the actual argument, the arguer introduces irrelevant points to distract the audience (Mauk). Clearly,
the author seems

The Prevelence and Influences of Stereotypes
Almost everyone has heard phrases such as blondes are dumb, Canadians live in igloos, females are
better drivers than males, students who do well in school are nerds and always sit in the front of the
class, etc. All of these sentences are examples of stereotypes. Stereotypes–as one can conclude from
the above sentences–are very broad generalizations targeted towards a group of individuals. They
usually target minorities based on the habits and actions these minorities engage in. Even though
many people find stereotypes to be funny, and some individuals will even argue that a class of
stereotypes can be proven to be correct because of research, they are nonetheless morally degrading
and therefore, are not grounded in truth because of lack of knowledge about one's
culture/background, personal experiences, and the roles of research and media in today's society. To
start off the discussion on stereotypes, one must first analyze how humans of today's society think.
Ever since the dawn of civilization, humans have had the ability to categorize things based on their
looks, actions, etc. Hence one can conclude that it is human nature to categorize different things, be
it other humans. It is the society's way of making a complex world simpler ((Division of Student
Affairs)). The notion of categorization of other human beings is programmed in a human's brain
since childhood. As humans age, their tendency to categorize different racial group as
superior/inferior increases

George Orwell 's ' Shooting An Elephant '
An iconic figure in the world of controversial novelists, Eric Arthur Blair was known more
commonly by his pen name George Orwell. He was very outspoken and blunt about his views
against the tyrannical British rule and openly opposed its nature. One of the reasons why he was
acclaimed as one of the best writers of the era was because of his lucid prose and the other was the
aptness of his work. George Orwell wanted to target the British rule and to support the idea of a
Democratic Government. In the essay 'Shooting an Elephant', Orwell shows the flaw in the system
and how being in power has left him without any power to make his own decision at all. "When the
white man turn tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys" (Orwell). The essay interests everyone
as it points out the necessity of democracy which has been a widely debated issue for ages. George
Orwell targeted masses all over the world through his writing because the essay was published in the
magazine which was available everywhere around the Globe. Although George Orwell uses some
harsh words to describe natives which undermine his argument however he explains his viewpoint
through a mixture of persuasive and convincing language, a well structured essay and an anti thesis
approach to show that Imperialism destroys the people and the system. In his essay, George Orwell
narrates his personal experience to reach a conclusion that "when white man turns tyrant it is his
own freedom that he destroys"

I Am Not Your Typical Stereotype Essay
Whichever sex we are, be it male or female, at the early stages of life we discover, or in other cases
are taught what is expected of us. Our cultural background will have some bearing on the path we
take to make it to adulthood. People with different sexual orientation, economic and social status,
just to name a few, are often stereotyped by others because of sketchy images they have grown up
with. Within this paper, I will present three everyday stereotypes I grew up believing and now
experience as an adult, then offer insight of how I took control of my life to rise above the barriers to
develop into the person I am today. As our parents nurtured us from babies to teenagers, we learn
how we are supposed to think and act to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of my friends came up to me and said, "she not your date" and I turned immediately all shades
of red. After that experience, I then knew that it was expected of me to like boys.
The schools did not teach what being gay meant, I just knew I felt different. I grew up in a deeply
religious family so liking girls was not an option. A television show that was on when I was growing
up was Three's Company; a man pretends to be gay so that he can live with two women. This was
the first reference of homosexuality on television (Ploshay, 2007). The way television and the media
portrays a character has a last affect on their viewers and readers.
My senior year of high school I lost weight, starting wearing contacts and played on the girls'
basketball team. I started dating a guy who ran track and had a promising future ahead of him. Our
relationship became serious but I just did not have feelings for him like the ones my friends talked
about having with their boyfriends. I ended up marrying the guy before leaving for basic training
with the Air Force.
After joining the Air Force, I finally met my first "official" lesbian. She took me to a cook out where
there were other lesbian. For the first time in my life, I felt free to be me. However, at that time if
you were caught having a lesbian relationship you were dishonorably discharged, no questions

Summary Of Against The Odds, And Against The Common Good...
In her essay "Against the Odds, and Against the Common Good," Gloria Jimenez attempts to
dismantle the appeal of state–run lotteries. First, she takes advantage of conversational writing to
convey the reader's ethics by exploring syntactical techniques and using examples of clever
gambling advertisements. These components strengthen her argument on the surface by creatively
appealing to emotion and reason. Jimenez unfortunately fails to create a convincing argument by
implementing several improper grammar techniques and a couple of fallacies, weakening the
credibility of her argument. Gloria Jimenez' essay, while emotionally appealing, is incapable of
withstanding the criticism produced and created by a lack of grammatical expertise and writing
practices. In her essay "Against the Odds, and Against the Common Good," Gloria Jimenez asserts
that states should not promote and advertize gambling. Jimenez lists many clever lottery slogans that
are deceivingly interpreted. She also argues that these slogans advertise the advantages of gambling
and playing the lottery because the money supposedly goes to things such as education and social
service. Jimenez explains some arguments in favor of state–run lotteries, such as free participation
and the creation of jobs, but argues that they are not relevant to the problem. She briefly touches on
a statistic claiming that low income individuals are more likely to spend money on lottery tickets
than their opposite, higher income

The 's Intention Of An Open Ended Conclusion
Author's intention of an open–ended conclusion in "Recitatif" by Toni Morrison.
Raising awareness of stereotyping by invoking personal prejudices in interpreting the story.
"Recitatif" by Toni Morrison is about a friendship of two main characters, Twyla and Roberta,
facing a falling out as a result of invisible barriers imposed by prejudice. Narrated by Twyla, their
development of alienation (slow falling–outs) is portrayed through a few counts of unplanned
encounters throughout their life in 1960s to 1980s, the progressive period of the civil rights
movement (Janken). The time period can be assumed by a few mentionings from the story such as
"appointment with Jimi Hendrix" (par. 47; all page references are to the class text.) a famous
guitarist in1960s, "IBM people who just moved into the city"(par. 55), IBM headquarter was
relocated to Armonk in 1964 (Fuchs) and the "racial strife" (par. 145). The setting plays an
important part of the puzzle by giving the readers idea (insight) of the overall atmosphere of the
society, where a social class and a racial discrimination considered social norms. In the story, the
author repeatedly throws hints of the social class and the racial difference of two main characters to
lead the readers to guess and challenge their "knowledge" by inducing personal perspective into the
story. And by intentionally leaving an open ended conclusion without an answer, the author cleverly
provokes self awareness on inferential generalization of the

Examples Of Fallacy Of Hasty Generalization
1. Please re–examine the way the conclusion was written. Is the statement of the conclusion biased?
Is the definition of the key terms neutral and acceptable? Or is it controversial? Is there a need to
revise the statement of the conclusion?
The way the conclusion was written is unbiased for it was clearly presented and stated. The terms
are evidently defined as well and so, no further revision of the conclusion is needed.
2. Next, re–examine the claim of the conclusion: If it is an empirical generalization, then challenge
it by demanding the required evidence for many, most or all claim in the premises set. If the required
evidence for the generalization was not offered in the premise set, then reject the argument for

You know that generalizations can be challenged by citing that the observed cases are not
representative of the population or that the sample is not large enough, hence the fallacy of hasty
generalization is made.
Premises 1, 2 and 3 prove the generalization since both were able to satisfy the requirement of the
term "some" – that at least one reported case of a child negatively affected by television viewing be
presented. Hence, fallacy of hasty generalization is not made.
b. Another tactic is to demonstrate that the observed cases are biased because they were not
observed in every possible variety of time, place and circumstance and that a thorough search for
counter examples was not done.
Unfortunately, there were no scientific studies presented about how people from different places
around the world and how people from different age groups respond to the effects of television
watching. The genetic makeup of people varies hence, the conclusion may not be true to some.
c. Then, to clinch your point, produce the counter example. Caution: a counter example applies only
to an all claim; but very few are aware of this. You could use this to your advantage. In contrast, to

Thank You for Smoking? Essay
"Thank You for Smoking...?"
Peter Brimelow brings to light an interesting idea in his essay "Thank You for Smoking...?"
Brimelow's purpose of his essay is to defend smoking. He provides the audience with information
that is worthy of their consideration and valid enough to make them think twice about how they
stand on the issue of smoking. Unfortunately, some flaws in Brimelow's technique distract the
audience from his message that smoking is not as unhealthy as it appears. A few mistakes transform
his work from a well–written argumentative essay to an unsuccessful attempt to spread his beliefs.

Freedom is a value that people have and want to retain. When Brimelow makes this argument about
smoking look like an attack on freedom, people are likely to join forces with him. The facts found
throughout the paper are worthy support to Brimelow's main point, but compared to appealing to
these values of people, it is merely an added influence.
Brimelow's essay also appeals to peoples' warrants and personal beliefs about health. Health, along
with freedom, is another important issue that grabs the attention of the audience. Throughout the
essay, references are made to a number of diseases that smoking can help to fight off. Such diseases
include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Osteoarthritis, and different types of cancer.
Studies have shown that these diseases are less common among smokers (Brimelow 142). Backing,
or support for warrants (McFadden), is found in paragraphs where Brimelow has found other
positives of smoking. Not only does the warrant appeal to the values of the audience, but when there
is even more backing to support it, people are emotionally drawn to the issue and have even more
information to persuade their judgment.
By now, it appears that Brimelow has captured the attention of his audience and persuaded them to
agree with him. His main claim has been

Positive Benefits Of Positive Thinking
Positive thinking is a center of many good benefits. There are many ways to use positive thinking to
change a person's life. It is not just for making one feel happy or experience a positive attitude; it is
a source that he or she uses to benefit oneself. It is a source that an individual uses to create a
happier and meaningful life.

kid's case, the kid uses emotions to assess what he or she enjoys and bases that to making his or her

implications to a smaller group of individuals and not to a larger population. There are many kids

Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose
Through Twelve Angry Men Flim, the author, Reginald Rose, paints a picture of a small portion of
American society in the mid–1950s. At this time, the United States was envolving into an internal
struggle, the Civil Rights Movement, which was concerned with ending racism discrimination and
promoting freedom, respect and equality. Rose's movie presents domestic conflicts which exist in a
stereotypical American society and politic in 1950s in America. 12 Angry Men is the story of 12
jurors who must decide if a boy is guilty or not guilty of killing his father. It takes place in New
York City Court of Law jury room where 12 jurors must come a unanimous conclusion. A great deal
of logical fallacies were presented by jurrors in attempt to prove that the defendent as guilty. One of
most obvious fallacy that is committed in the 12 Angry Men is the hasty generalization fallacy. This
fallacy is committed when a person draws a conclusion about a population based on a sample that is
not large enough. In the 12 Anfry Men, this logical fallacy is made by the tenth juror, E.G Marshell.

Essay about Rap and Moral Character
Rap and Moral Character In the article Rap and Moral Character by Wesley Cragg and Christine
Koggel, the subject of concern is the consequences of listening to rap music and the effects on moral
behaviour. The author suggests that rap and moral character are linked and that due to the natural
context of rap, it promotes violence, crass materialism, crime, and is misogynistic and therefore
corrupts a person's moral character. Based on their claims, the authors take the position that rap
should be censured – morally. In this paper, I will examine the authors' claims, their reasoning, and
their use of concepts. By doing so, I will be able to demonstrate that their thesis (rap corrupts moral
character and deserves moral censure) is unjust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This claim may seem to be fine if it stood by itself. However, in this context, the author is saying
that everyone who listens to rap is bad, corrupt, and engages in criminal activities. In other words,
the authors are saying that they are bad. This claim is loaded and assumes that everyone who listens
to this type of music is bad because through the whole article, they talk about how rap disrupts
moral character and how it leads to bad things. This can also be classified as a hasty generalization.
This is a hasty generalization because the authors generalize beyond the limits of the population
(implying that everyone who listens to rap is a certain type of person).
The authors make another fallacious claim right after the hasty generalization claim. The claim
'Seeking out such material is like seeking out and choosing to watch portrayals of atrocities, such as
rapes, executions, and real–life violence, all of which are available in our culture and on the Internet'
is a prime example of Red Herring. Red Herring is used to divert attention away from an
argument/claim to something more acceptable and easy to explain. The topic at hand in this article is
how rap corrupts moral character and requires moral censure. The authors attempt to raise other

Analysis Of ' Demagoguery And Fallacies ' Essay
Esteban Rodriguez
Professor Brent Program
English 116
October 8, 2016
"Demagoguery and Fallacies" In all speeches, we used different types of demagoguery to make our
statements more appealing to our audience. Patricia Roberts–Miller studied the principles of
demagoguery and how they appeal to the public to make appropriate decisions. Patricia Roberts also
state "that the most that information, the less likely the public will make appropriate decisions", with
this information we can conclude how they can be used to appeal to the people. in different topics
we use different demagoguery or fallacies to divide people into two different groups; the ingroup
and outgroup. The ingroup is viewed as the good and correct group while the outgroup is viewed as
wrong and bad. Demagoguery occurs mostly in times of political and economic crisis. In the speech
of George Wallace on the topic of segregation and Donald Trump 's speech on the topic of
immigration are perfect examples of the use of demagoguery. I will analyse the use of demagoguery
and fallacies; such as grandstanding, demonising, nationalism, and hasty generalization, throughout
their speeches to see how they appeal to the audience, I believe that the strategies use will show how
the argument is inaccurate or how it relies on fear . In George Wallace in his speech as the

Stereotypes
Stereotypes are everywhere and can be about anyone. Generalized remarks about gender, sexual
orientation, religion, ethnicity or age are common forms of stereotyping. Any time someone makes
hasty groupings whether by race, gender or an individual and makes a blanket judgment about them
is stereotyping. Military members are no different than society. One of the military's greatest assets
is its diverse workforce but with diversity comes stereotypes. As a woman in the military, I
frequently encounter stereotypes and have made hasty conclusions about others. This paper will
discuss a few stereotypes that I have faced in the military.

When women feel unnecessarily grouped as less committed, their commitment can fall based on
lack of trust of their leadership. This feeling will follow them and they may even start to stereotype
all men in the military as only promoting and caring for the males within an organization. Also, men
who already believed women were inferior to men in the military easily agreed with my supervisors
stereotype (Ditto, 2011). According to Kemick (2010)," People are more likely to be aggressive after
they've faced prejudice in a given situation," says Inzlict" (p.1).
Recently with Don't Ask Don't Tell being repealed, many generalizations have been made about
males in the military who have feminine traits and must be gay. The argument is that male flight
attendants have feminine traits, a male with feminine traits are gay, so male flight attendants are gay.
This fallacy is clearly Begs the Question fallacy. "Often this kind of reasoning is criticized as
"circular reasoning," in that the premise that supports the conclusion is in turn supported by the
conclusion, and thus goes in a circle" (Mosser, 2011, Sec 4.2). This argument is flawed because I
know many male flight attendants in the military who are married with children. They have more
feminine traits because they were raised by their mother, grandmother and sisters rather than a
strong male figure. This type of prejudice can lead to some males picked on or singled out by other
aircrew because of their

Modern Technology And Its Impact On Modern Society Essay
Modern technology has undoubtedly had a profound impact on contemporary society. However,
critics of modern technology emphasize that modern technology has had deleterious effects on
young Americans. In The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans
and Jeopardizes Our Future: Or, Don 't Trust Anyone under 30, Mark Bauerlein attempts to argue
that the young Americans of contemporary society are increasingly unintelligent as a result of
modern technology, but fails to elaborate on his criteria for evaluating intelligence. Bauerlein
engages in fallacious rhetoric while presenting his argument that today's young Americans are part
of the "dumbest generation" because he fails to acknowledge the beneficial impacts that modern
technology has had on Americans. His overall argument is diminished by his usage of logical
fallacies, while arguments that do not rely on logical fallacies and rather focus on deliberate
rhetorical appeals are more cogent. Bauerlein's failure to contribute relevant evidence and his
excessive use of logical fallacies ultimately hinders his argument that modern technology has led to
the decline in youth intelligence, which is what makes counter–arguments presented by other
authors, such as Clay Shirky and Donald Norman's, much more convincing. In his book The
Dumbest Generation, Emory Professor Mark Bauerlein emphasizes his belief that most young
Americans avoid learning due to their pre–occupation with modern technology. He

Gun Control Fallacies
The author makes several main claims throughout his articles such as, "national news stories are
virtually never done on permit holders stopping mass public shootings," and "the proposals put
forward by gun control advocates wouldn't have stopped this attack." The columnist firmly believes
in the power of the second amendment and as such, he wants to limit the amount of new laws that
control how much the people can hold and use weapons. The claims listed are claims of fact and
policy respectively. He gives several examples of how these different prevented mass shootings
were not widely advertised and how the ones that were not stopped were all over news stations to
convince people that guns are not helping the common people. The author then proposes that the
changes that gun control advocates propose will not make a difference and begins to give reasons
why which makes this a claim of policy. He says that making a change will not make any change so
the laws should be left the same as they are now, or they should be more inclusive to allow more
people to carry a concealed weapon.
One of the main fallacies that the author uses in his articles is a hasty generalization. He uses the
example of the Texas shooter and his bad background that would have prevented a weapons liscence
to make the generalization that, " their proposals wouldn't have stopped any of the other mass public
shootings in the last couple decades." The author does not back this claim up very well and

Snickers Vs Twix Research Paper
Throughout many years there has been a debate between whether Snickers or Twix is the best candy
bar overall. When discussed, people have disputed on whether the flavors in the candy bars are
tastier, which candy bar is healthier, and which has more appeal in advertising.Even though Snickers
and Twix bars are made by the same company (Mars) they are very different. Snickers fans might
say that Snickers bars are the best because they have peanuts in the bar, this might be true for the
majority people, but not those with allergies. This evidence proves that Twix is the best candy bar.
One of the reasons that people think that Twix is the best candy bar is its overall appeal.
Furthermore, the wafer adds to the overall appeal. Compared to Snickers which has a chewy nougat,

On Death Row: Questioning Evidence

  • 1. Analysis Of On Death Row, But Is He Innocent In On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? Nicholas Kristof explores the position that the evidence that convicted Kevin Cooper, an inmate on death row in San Quentin State Prison, may be unreliable. In 1983, a California professor drove to his neighbor's house to pick up his eleven–year–old son. He peered through the window to find the house in a state of bloody disarray. Amongst the blood was the bodies of his neighbor's family and the lifeless body of his son. Additionally, the professor Joshua Ryen who was stabbed multiple times, but still clinging to life. Kristof highlights the overwhelming evidence of police tampering with evidence that sent Kevin Cooper to death row. Additionally, Kristof suggests evidence as to Cooper's innocence was not given proper scrutiny. Therefore, Kristof alleges Cooper's case, particularly the evidence, should be reviewed. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denied this request. Although as Attorney General of California, Jerry Brown should little interest in the case, as Governor he is currently reviewing the case. "The fallacy of irrelevance, or ignoratio elenchi, is an argument purporting to establish a particular conclusion, but is instead directed to proving another conclusion." Kristof potentially frames the fallacy of ignoratio elenchi even from the title: On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? On the one hand, the title does not commit the fallacy if framed just as written, a question. However, to the suggest Kristof's defense equates to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Hasty Generalization The use of the Internet has become increasingly popular in everyday activities of many Americans. The convenience and wealth of information at hand makes it a practical tool for managing day–to– day activities, communicating and staying in touch with friends, shopping, and many other activities. Deborah Fallows wrote an article, The Internet and Daily Life, based on a survey and research conducted through the Pew Research Center. Fallows indicated in the article that "88% of online Americans say the Internet plays a role in their daily routines. The activities they identified as most significant are communicating with family and friends and finding a wealth of information at their fingertips." She also concluded from the survey that "64% of Internet users say their daily routines and activities would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Russell's review indicated that Shirky's hasty generalizations resulted in broad conclusions representing himself and/or a small minority of techie people who use the Internet daily. Russell pointed this out as Shirky noted, "When the general public began using digital networks, the idea that everyone would contribute something to the public sphere was assumed to be contradictory to nature." Russell felt that Shirky's statement was more indicative of himself rather than the general public. What evidence did he have to support the claim? Additionally, Russell did not feel that collaboration through Internet use resulted in a significant change for society. Russell noted, "The last time I checked we still have to go to work every day and despite some momentary upheavals, the Internet has become one more way for savvy large corporations to make money." Russell did conceptualize the point that the Internet was beneficial but that it did not impact society in ways that Shirky ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Hasty Generalization Fallacy Fallacies are an error in reasoning, a fault in one's argument that does not have the correct evidence or facts. Fallacies are something that we commit since we were young kids, arguing with your brothers or sisters and into our adulthood arguing with our spouse or trying to make a point in our career fields. Many of us even commit these fallacies without realizing what we are doing, it is a learning progress for many to realize and understand when we are using fallacy and trigger our brain to think in a different way to avoid the trickiness of fallacies. One fallacy that could be tricky and easy to use daily would be Hasty Generalizations, which is a fallacy that is based on assumption, which we all know we have done at some point in our lives and can see how easy it could be to use as an automatic reaction. Hasty Generalization according to UNC is "Making assumption about a whole group or range of cases based on a sample that is inadequate stereotypes about people" When committing a Hasty Generalization fallacy, you are assuming a conclusion or assuming that one thing is the same as all of them in a group without knowing the proper facts to back up why your conclusion is correct. You take your own perspective on a subject and assume you know it all without doing the proper research to prove to someone else that you do actually know it all. • 7. Examples Of Hasty Generalization I. Pick three of these fallacies and write an example of each one. 1. Hasty Generalization: "I've met two individuals in Viet Nam in this way, and they were both pleasant to me. Thus, all individuals I will meet in Viet Nam will be decent to me." In any Hasty Generalization the key blunder is to overestimate the quality of a contention that depends on too little a specimen for the suggested certainty level or mistake edge. In this contention about Viet Nam, utilizing "all" in the conclusion suggests zero blunder edge. With zero blunder edge you'd have to test each and every individual in Viet Nam, not only two individuals. 2. It is ideal to speak to some space expert or geologist. A TV ad that gives you a testimonial from a well–known film star who wears a Rolex watch and that proposes you, as well, ought to wear that brand of watch is utilizing a deceptive engage power. The film star is a power on the proper behavior, not on which watch is best for you. II. Discuss the influence of literature on my life 1. What was your favorite novel in high school? Why? When I was in Viet Nam, my most loved books were The Harry Potter Series since they took my creative ability to another level. The Harry Potter universe is not that unrealistic. The story begins from our "muggle" world and the reader gradually gets acquainted with this shrouded mysterious world that us "muggles" can't see since we're no wizards. In the books, the supernatural world exists right by our own. It makes the reader trust we really could live in a universe like that. I may say that I live in a dreamland. 2. How often do you read for pleasure now? • 9. Logical Fallacies In Carleen Turner's Letter Logical Fallacies: Carleen Turner letter In her letter, Carleen Turner is telling about her son, Brock Turner and asks the judge to be kind and merciful to her son. It is obvious that Carleen Turner was writing the letter with the strong emotions, and the emotions in the letter are much stronger than a logical constituent. The first logical fallacy, begging the claim, one can see at the beginning of the letter. Carleen Turner is writing to the judge that she want to "introduce you to my son, Brock Turner – the REAL Brock Allen Turner" (Turner 1). The emotional story of the mother who evidently will try to show her son from the better side hardly will show the more real figure of Brock Turner than the materials of the case that shows him from the different sides and which the judge obviously have seen. However, Carleen Turner is not trying to prove in any way that her describing of Brock Turner is real, she just validates it within the claim, and that undermining her argument because she is not showing the real Brock Turner but only her view of him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She wrote that "the teacher said he is supposed to be a mean guy and she could not get Brock to act mean. That's just him – a nice guy" (Turner 2). The fact that Brock could not play a mean character in the theater does not mean that he is a nice person. Play in the theater shows only talent and ability of a person. This facility undermined the part of the main argument in the letter that Brock Turner is a nice person who does not deserve punishment and being in prison. The fact that Brock Turner could not play negative character did not confirm that he is a nice person, it only shows that he could not play ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hasty generalization– The writer of this statement makes a hasty generalization about the pornography issue. The writer makes a general statement stating that "the Americans public believes that pornography has a harmful effect on its audience." His conclusion is based on the facts collected from few statistics sites that show actions against pornography. Moreover, he makes the assumption that the American people considers that pornography has a bad influence on people based on the following: the huge increase in the membership in Coalitions Against Pornography, based on how stores removed the pornographic material from the shelves and based on the military decision ... • 13. Fallacies And Aspects Of Cheating In The Film : Faking The... Cheating, also known according to the film as faking the grade, is certainly unfair to honest students. The unfairness comes in some cases where the cheater outperforms the honest student. Faking the Grade is a film that portrays cheating as something immoral and that it puts the honest people at a disadvantage whether it is during school/university or throughout their lives. Children nowadays are depending on the many forms of cheating to be successful. According to Schmuley Boteach, however, cheating is something to blame on the parents and not the children because that is where it starts (Faking the Grade, web). In this paper I analyze arguments made in the film by specifically focusing on the generalizations made and connecting them to the different fallacies and principles of argumentation that relate to hasty generalizations. First, I discuss a hasty generalization that was introduced in the film at the beginning which led for the remaining arguments of the film to be weaker and narrowed down. Then, I discuss Boteach's argument which concludes that parents are the main fault for kids cheating and I mention the variety of different fallacies committed in that argument. The generalizations made in this film are very clear. The narrator starts off the film by bringing up a study made in Canada where half of the undergraduates admitted to cheating in university and over three quarters admitted they cheated in high school (Faking the Grade, web). We can tell from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Stereotypes, Stereotyping, And Stereotyping Stereotypes Most people have encountered stereotypical behavior, either by being stereotyped or by stereotyping a particular group of individuals themselves. This simplistic or overstated vague notion may occur consciously or unconsciously depending on a person's perspective, his or her exposures to diverse cultures, as well as immediate social influences. Moreover, stereotyping has the potential to result in negative generalizations that may progenerate displaced anger towards scapegoats; however, may also result in inflated positive perceptions of a specific group of individuals. Stereotyping, most commonly, is geared towards a specific race, culture, gender. A popular positive perception that is geared towards the Black race is that individuals from this group are superior athletes. On the other hand, negative statements that, to a certain extent, contradict the first remark is that all Blacks are lazy. There are many exceptional African–American athletes in the NBA and WNBA, for example; however, that does not indicate that all Blacks are good in all sports, or in sports in general, just as not all Whites are good in baseball or soccer just because these major leagues are dominated by Whites. Alternatively, the African–American population is being stigmatized as being lazy, which according to Laura Green, is due to the assumption that Blacks abuse the welfare system. In other words, African–Americans are being stereotyped as welfare capitalists in order to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Hasty Generalization Fallacy Examples The Hasty Generalization fallacy is an inductive generalization, wherein a sample of the population is responsible for the conclusion representing the entire population. A number of categories are contained in this fallacy, including insufficient statistics, overgeneralization, and samples not accurately represented. The hasty generalization fallacy is often referred to as "jumping to conclusions" or the use of limited samples, and can be prone to instant gratification; the smaller samples and statistics allow for a quicker result although the outcomes could be infinite. An example of a hasty generalization fallacy would be a number of commercials that represent that "A out of B recommend C". In this instance, A represents the number of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Based on this presentation alone, one could infer that all stepmothers are evil, or that all stepdaughters are Cinderellas. The Appeal to Tradition fallacy is based on the idea that the way things have always been done is the right way. This fallacy has been applied to a number of situations, most recently with technological advancements, as well as family legacies. While not as prevalent as it once was, a number of students have attended colleges and completed degrees in fields they were not interested in simply because the seven generations before them had; it had now become a "family tradition." Other appeal to traditions fallacies occurred in offices around the country as computer technology began to replace typewriters, long hand, and the Dewey decimal system. Those deemed set in their ways had many difficulties accepting the changes and could not understand why the old ways needed to be changed, even if it meant more efficiency. This Chinese mother described her parenting style as superior and all knowing compared to the parenting style of the common Western parent which was described as anxious and conflicted. The article follows the structure of the chinese mothers parenting style. This parenting style can be described as very strict, very demanding, and extremely tenacious. The reason for this is the fact that chinese mothers are giving the child very little to almost zero say in what they want to do or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After she explains her points, she gets into a story about her and her seven year old daughter. She sets the scene by telling us that her daughter is learning a new song on the piano. To make a long story short, Chau threatened her daughter by saying she would receive no food or christmas presents if she did not learn the song. She would not let her seven year old daughter get and use the bathroom until she recited the song perfectly. All of a sudden, her daughter learned the song after all the long hours of non–stop arguing and yelling and practice. The first thing that really caught my eye was a statement by Chau saying that, "Chinese parents understand that nothing is fun until you're good at it." (Chau 262). Many people would completely disagree because there are plenty of things that are fun, even if you are not good at them. Someone could love to draw or play a sport and be bad at it at the same time and that is completely okay. You should not have to be the best at everything you do because no matter what you may be good at, there is always someone better than you or someone that will think that they or someone else is better than you. Even though there are plenty of statements in this article that I disagree with, there is a few that I do agree with. Towards the end of the article Chau makes a very valid point about self esteem: "There's nothing better for building confidence than learning you can do something you thought ... • 21. Fallacy Paper Fallacies are committed in every state, in every city and in every neighborhood. No race or gender is impervious to committing a fallacy. So, what is a fallacy? Patrick J. Hurley defines a fallacy as, "A defect in an argument that consists in something other than false premises alone." These defects result in misconception in an argument. Many times they are accidental, other times they are committed on purpose. However, either way, fallacies can be very persuasive to the casual reader or listener. One in particular, the false cause fallacy, is used quite often in today's society. Hurley states that, "The fallacy of false cause occurs whenever the link between premises and conclusion depends on some imagined causal connection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A remedy society knows as "trial and error." People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) use fallacies in almost all of their advertisements. In fact, 'Veggie Love,' a super bowl video ad by PETA, claims that vegetarians have better sex. In the video, gorgeous women dressed in lingerie are groping broccoli, asparagus and even a licking a pumpkin. This video commits the false cause fallacy because it expresses that people are having great sex because they are vegetarians. In addition, if a person wants to have great sex, they need to become a vegetarian. It is also possible that an argument commit more than one fallacy at a time. This video also commits the hasty generalization fallacy, because it states that if you eat vegetables you will have great sex with gorgeous women, therefore the obvious conclusion is that all vegetarians have great sex! To tell these two different types of fallacies apart a reader or listener must know what defines these two types of fallacies. Because 'Veggie Love' focuses on vegetarians and great sex, and PETA claims that there is a causal connection between the two, it can be defined as a false cause fallacy. Because the video also claims that people who eat vegetables have great sex, we can assume that all vegetarians have great sex which can be defined as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Analysis Of Terry Moore's Speech Terry Moore's speech, "How to tie your shoes", was printed in May of 2011, for the use and free viewing of the public. He discusses the reality that many people do not know that they are actually tying their shoes incorrectly, and he shares with the audience what he has found to be the proper way to tie one's shoes. Throughout his speech, Moore uses stories, demonstrations, and lighthearted humor to engage the audience and deliver his message. Though simple, Moore's speech has just the right amount of quirkiness, fun, and technicality to be memorable for most viewers. He expertly tailors his speech to be delivered to a unique audience at the Technology Entertainment and Design (TED). Conference in February of 2005. The audience consists of mostly wealthy scholars and people interested in gaining knowledge and insight. Terry Moore thinks that by showing the audience the correct way to tie their shoes, he would provide them with the quality enlightenment that they are seeking. His speech about the proper technique of shoe tying to ensure that laces stay tied for longer periods of time uses ethos, and his strongest writing strategy is his lighthearted and entertaining diction. Ethos is predominately used in the speech to connect to the audience and establish the credibility of the speaker, Terry Moore. Moore develops ethos by telling the audience a story about when he first learned the proper way to tie his shoes. By acknowledging that for many years he was unaware that he ... What does Davis mean by interpretive obedience in his essay, Professional Responsibility: Just Following the Rules? Interpretive obedience is what Davis believes to be the right way of following rules in professional ethics. Therefore, if a person can understand how to follow rules, than it is the correct way to abide by the rules. However, Davis emphasizes that if people follow rules blindly, then they will not see anything but that, and people will then use rules as an excuse. Which is why Davis favors interpretive obedience because in his essay he means interpretive obedience to be the understanding of the rule, a person to know the justification of the rule, and to carry out the action that goes along with the justification. Both of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are using the political skills to argue because their major party candidates for president have to appear to be fully qualified to occupy the Oval Office. After watching of these videos of both Hillary and Trump's speech, in my opinion, I analyze three types of informal fallacies from their speeches such as argument against the person, hasty generalization, and appeal to people; especially, appeal to vanity. • 29. Examples Of Consensus In 12 Angry Men When someone is on trial for murder, it can be difficult for a stranger to realize that the person on trial's life is in the hands of a small group of people. Therefore, due to jurors often being strangers, it can be significantly difficult to put aside their biases and come to a proper consensus. In the film 12 Angry Men, the process of coming to a consensus was troubling due to Juror Three's personal bias towards the topic. Unlike looking at the situation rationally as Juror Eight did, Juror Three brought his emotions, personal experiences, and bias into his fallacy–riddled argument. Juror Three was arguably the most difficult juror to convince that the boy was not guilty. Throughout the whole film, up until the end, Juror Three stood his ground with his argument. Juror Three often disagreed with any counterargument that Juror Eight made. Near the beginning of the film, Juror Three went off on an off–topic tangent about his son and how he was so ashamed in his actions and how he was also a teen. Therefore, we are able to notice the motive behind the arguments that he made. Juror Three would often try to counter someone else's argument by stating that he knows for sure the boy is guilty. For almost every counter argument, he would provide little to no evidence to back his claims. In addition, the most notable trait about Juror Three's arguments is that he refuses to acknowledge that there is, indeed, reasonable doubt. For example, despite all the information about the ... These assumptions could be due to their race, culture, country, community and religion. Women are not as smart as men. Men are strong and do all the work. Americans are tolerant but arrogant. Girls are not good at sports. Black people are stronger than white people. Black people are criminals. Old folks are all very old fashioned. All blond women are dumb. Guys are messy and unclean. Girls are only concerned about physical appearance. Women always talk too much on the phone. All Blacks are lazy. Women are bad drivers. Muslims are terrorists. These are some famous stereotypes representing some commonly held conventional beliefs about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clearly, there is no logic behind this stereotype. For example, if we look in the history, most of the attacks like 9/11 are done by Muslims, so it is assumed that all Muslims are terrorists. Although it is true that Muslims are involved in many attacks, but there are some people behind all this who try to create violence in the name of religion and who make them do this, while Islam is not about all this. These are just some violent people who try to do bad things in the name of religion. These violent people exist in every religion. Due to bad act of few people, we cannot say that all Muslims are terrorists. Another reason for the existence of stereotypes is hasty generalizations. The concept of hasty generalization is in close proximity with stereotypical generalizations. Hasty generalization is based on insufficient evidence–drawing a conclusion about a population based on a sample that is not large enough. For example, if someone is driving the car and a woman cut him off on the freeway and that person establishes the reason that "All women are bad drivers". So, this type of assumption that the reason for her bad driving is her gender is a stereotype. Men can also be bad drivers. • 35. Argumeative Essay 'Hasty Generalization' When writing an argumentative essay, there are certain debate skills that different writers like to use. However, there are also many poor choices in writing that many people make, known as fallacies. These fallacies can damage the argument presented in ones paper, whether it is used on purpose or not. One big example of a fallacy is known as "Hasty Generalization". People use hasty generalization when they make assumptions on a whole group of people, based on only a small sample. For example, if somebody went to a Texas Roadhouse and received terrible customer service from their waitress, and then wrote about how awful Texas Roadhouses waitresses are, he/she would be using hasty generalization. That person would be giving his opinion of the company as a whole, based only on one waitress at one restaurant. In an argumentative essay, your argument will not be very strong is you are using this fallacy. Another common fallacy, especially in marketing and commercials, is "Appeal to Authority". This fallacy is used when somebody uses a well known person to help convince the audience of their view. Although this trick may work in advertising,it should be avoided when writing. Most people accept this hierarchy as long as they see the system is fair. However, it is not fair, and this in turn becomes visible when it comes to occupations. One example of this is in the second paragraph of Friedman's "Come the Revolution." After introducing Andrew Ng, professor and cofounder of Coursera, and explaining the online platform's benefits, Friedman quotes Ng to support his argument. He writes, " "I normally teach 400 students," Ng explained, but last semester he taught 100,000 in an online course on machine learning. Not surprisingly, the author assumes everyone who despises the fact that the Patriot's won the championship is tired of hearing about their success. Although I grant his quasi–conservative generalization to be partly true, I still maintain that whoever questions New England's success has a pretty good reason to believe so. Instead of the looking at the big picture and considering both sides of the spectrum, the author continues to back up his anti–liberal outlook as he states, "The Patriots are right to feel like they are in the center of the crosshairs, the object of disaffection, and the target of a witch hunt. The whole false outrage isn't about the legacy of the Patriots; it's about the legacy of those making the claims. It's coming from those of past dynasties that are afraid that the Patriots have lapped them in the all time rankings. It's coming from players who are so willing to overlook their own warts in order to point out the Patriots'." Here the author not only proves to present a objectivity disguise, which fools the audience into thinking the presented information is unbiased; but also introduces a red herring fallacy. The Prevelence and Influences of Stereotypes Almost everyone has heard phrases such as blondes are dumb, Canadians live in igloos, females are better drivers than males, students who do well in school are nerds and always sit in the front of the class, etc. All of these sentences are examples of stereotypes. Stereotypes–as one can conclude from the above sentences–are very broad generalizations targeted towards a group of individuals. They usually target minorities based on the habits and actions these minorities engage in. Even though many people find stereotypes to be funny, and some individuals will even argue that a class of stereotypes can be proven to be correct because of research, they are nonetheless morally degrading and therefore, are not grounded in truth because of lack of knowledge about one's culture/background, personal experiences, and the roles of research and media in today's society. To start off the discussion on stereotypes, one must first analyze how humans of today's society think. Ever since the dawn of civilization, humans have had the ability to categorize things based on their looks, actions, etc. Hence one can conclude that it is human nature to categorize different things, be it other humans. It is the society's way of making a complex world simpler ((Division of Student Affairs)). The notion of categorization of other human beings is programmed in a human's brain since childhood. In her essay "Against the Odds, and Against the Common Good," Gloria Jimenez attempts to dismantle the appeal of state–run lotteries. First, she takes advantage of conversational writing to convey the reader's ethics by exploring syntactical techniques and using examples of clever gambling advertisements. These components strengthen her argument on the surface by creatively appealing to emotion and reason. Jimenez unfortunately fails to create a convincing argument by implementing several improper grammar techniques and a couple of fallacies, weakening the credibility of her argument. Gloria Jimenez' essay, while emotionally appealing, is incapable of withstanding the criticism produced and created by a lack of grammatical expertise and writing practices. In her essay "Against the Odds, and Against the Common Good," Gloria Jimenez asserts that states should not promote and advertize gambling. "Recitatif" by Toni Morrison is about a friendship of two main characters, Twyla and Roberta, facing a falling out as a result of invisible barriers imposed by prejudice. Narrated by Twyla, their development of alienation (slow falling–outs) is portrayed through a few counts of unplanned encounters throughout their life in 1960s to 1980s, the progressive period of the civil rights movement (Janken). The time period can be assumed by a few mentionings from the story such as "appointment with Jimi Hendrix" (par. 47; all page references are to the class text.) a famous guitarist in1960s, "IBM people who just moved into the city"(par. 55), IBM headquarter was relocated to Armonk in 1964 (Fuchs) and the "racial strife" (par. 145). The setting plays an important part of the puzzle by giving the readers idea (insight) of the overall atmosphere of the society, where a social class and a racial discrimination considered social norms. In the story, the author repeatedly throws hints of the social class and the racial difference of two main characters to lead the readers to guess and challenge their "knowledge" by inducing personal perspective into the story. Hence, fallacy of hasty generalization is not made. b. Another tactic is to demonstrate that the observed cases are biased because they were not observed in every possible variety of time, place and circumstance and that a thorough search for counter examples was not done. Unfortunately, there were no scientific studies presented about how people from different places around the world and how people from different age groups respond to the effects of television watching. The genetic makeup of people varies hence, the conclusion may not be true to some. c. Then, to clinch your point, produce the counter example. Caution: a counter example applies only to an all claim; but very few are aware of this. You could use this to your advantage. In contrast, to challenge a most claim you need many counter ... • 59. Thank You for Smoking? Essay "Thank You for Smoking...?" Peter Brimelow brings to light an interesting idea in his essay "Thank You for Smoking...?" Brimelow's purpose of his essay is to defend smoking. He provides the audience with information that is worthy of their consideration and valid enough to make them think twice about how they stand on the issue of smoking. Unfortunately, some flaws in Brimelow's technique distract the audience from his message that smoking is not as unhealthy as it appears. A few mistakes transform his work from a well–written argumentative essay to an unsuccessful attempt to spread his beliefs. What started as an essay to rouse new views on the issue of smoking swiftly lost all merit and became a means to assail the people in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Freedom is a value that people have and want to retain. When Brimelow makes this argument about smoking look like an attack on freedom, people are likely to join forces with him. The facts found throughout the paper are worthy support to Brimelow's main point, but compared to appealing to these values of people, it is merely an added influence. Brimelow's essay also appeals to peoples' warrants and personal beliefs about health. Health, along with freedom, is another important issue that grabs the attention of the audience. Throughout the essay, references are made to a number of diseases that smoking can help to fight off. Such diseases include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Osteoarthritis, and different types of cancer. Studies have shown that these diseases are less common among smokers (Brimelow 142). Backing, or support for warrants (McFadden), is found in paragraphs where Brimelow has found other positives of smoking. Not only does the warrant appeal to the values of the audience, but when there is even more backing to support it, people are emotionally drawn to the issue and have even more information to persuade their judgment. By now, it appears that Brimelow has captured the attention of his audience and persuaded them to agree with him. His main claim has been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Positive Benefits Of Positive Thinking Positive thinking is a center of many good benefits. There are many ways to use positive thinking to change a person's life. It is not just for making one feel happy or experience a positive attitude; it is a source that he or she uses to benefit oneself. It is a source that an individual uses to create a happier and meaningful life. According to Clear, (using a real life scenario) details of a kid that naturally have became an athlete from engaging in activities that are active with friends. He continue that simple activity such as playing outside with friends, the kid is building upon a well–adjusted cooperation with others, more developing in physical movements and openness to exploring peers' opinions. The joy memories that the kid has felt inspires him or her to do something that involves similar experiences to his or her childhood and, in this case, a profession athletic. This real life scenario is affected by integrating emotions. Clear analyzes emotions in ways that can impact an individual ways of thinking. In the kid's case, the kid uses emotions to assess what he or she enjoys and bases that to making his or her choice of things in life. The kid action is more based on emotions than with intuitive decision– making. Another thing, this scenario is considered as a hasty generalization fallacy due to implications to a smaller group of individuals and not to a larger population. There are many kids that grow up playing outside with friends, but as adults, their job is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose Through Twelve Angry Men Flim, the author, Reginald Rose, paints a picture of a small portion of American society in the mid–1950s. At this time, the United States was envolving into an internal struggle, the Civil Rights Movement, which was concerned with ending racism discrimination and promoting freedom, respect and equality. Rose's movie presents domestic conflicts which exist in a stereotypical American society and politic in 1950s in America. 12 Angry Men is the story of 12 jurors who must decide if a boy is guilty or not guilty of killing his father. It takes place in New York City Court of Law jury room where 12 jurors must come a unanimous conclusion. A great deal of logical fallacies were presented by jurrors in attempt to prove that the defendent as guilty. One of most obvious fallacy that is committed in the 12 Angry Men is the hasty generalization fallacy. This fallacy is committed when a person draws a conclusion about a population based on a sample that is not large enough. In the 12 Anfry Men, this logical fallacy is made by the tenth juror, E.G Marshell. He supports his argument, " That's boy was born in street, everyone in that street does those thing." He assumes that the boy committed the crime because the town that he was born where has the reputation of commiting crime. He is making a form of prejudice called stereotyping because he is making an unwarranted generalization about people who are the same race, Hispanic, as the boy.. It is based on this ... • 65. Essay about Rap and Moral Character Rap and Moral Character In the article Rap and Moral Character by Wesley Cragg and Christine Koggel, the subject of concern is the consequences of listening to rap music and the effects on moral behaviour. The author suggests that rap and moral character are linked and that due to the natural context of rap, it promotes violence, crass materialism, crime, and is misogynistic and therefore corrupts a person's moral character. Based on their claims, the authors take the position that rap should be censured – morally. In this paper, I will examine the authors' claims, their reasoning, and their use of concepts. By doing so, I will be able to demonstrate that their thesis (rap corrupts moral character and deserves moral censure) is unjust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This claim may seem to be fine if it stood by itself. However, in this context, the author is saying that everyone who listens to rap is bad, corrupt, and engages in criminal activities. In other words, the authors are saying that they are bad. This claim is loaded and assumes that everyone who listens to this type of music is bad because through the whole article, they talk about how rap disrupts moral character and how it leads to bad things. This can also be classified as a hasty generalization. This is a hasty generalization because the authors generalize beyond the limits of the population (implying that everyone who listens to rap is a certain type of person). The authors make another fallacious claim right after the hasty generalization claim. The claim 'Seeking out such material is like seeking out and choosing to watch portrayals of atrocities, such as rapes, executions, and real–life violence, all of which are available in our culture and on the Internet' is a prime example of Red Herring. Red Herring is used to divert attention away from an argument/claim to something more acceptable and easy to explain. The topic at hand in this article is how rap corrupts moral character and requires moral censure. The authors attempt to raise other examples of bad things in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Analysis Of ' Demagoguery And Fallacies ' Essay Esteban Rodriguez Professor Brent Program English 116 October 8, 2016 "Demagoguery and Fallacies" In all speeches, we used different types of demagoguery to make our statements more appealing to our audience. Patricia Roberts–Miller studied the principles of demagoguery and how they appeal to the public to make appropriate decisions. Patricia Roberts also state "that the most that information, the less likely the public will make appropriate decisions", with this information we can conclude how they can be used to appeal to the people. in different topics we use different demagoguery or fallacies to divide people into two different groups; the ingroup and outgroup. The ingroup is viewed as the good and correct group while the outgroup is viewed as wrong and bad. Demagoguery occurs mostly in times of political and economic crisis. In the speech of George Wallace on the topic of segregation and Donald Trump 's speech on the topic of immigration are perfect examples of the use of demagoguery. I will analyse the use of demagoguery and fallacies; such as grandstanding, demonising, nationalism, and hasty generalization, throughout their speeches to see how they appeal to the audience, I believe that the strategies use will show how the argument is inaccurate or how it relies on fear . In George Wallace in his speech as the "Governor of Alabama" was written by Asa Carter, a Ku Klux Klan leader during the height of the civil right movement. Wallace speech uses demagoguery such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Example Of A Fallacy Essay 1. A fallacy I found in the first paragraph is Red herring because there was a shift from "Dating is a very recent phenomenon in world history" to a discussion of how women were chaperoned with strict rules to follow (pg, 144). The second paragraph, I found the fallacy Hasty generalization: "Today these young women want the freedoms that we won..." this is a generalization that is unrepresentative of the targeted population (pg, 144). For the third paragraph, I found the fallacy Straw man – the author creates and then attack young feminists, "they come from a protected, white, middle–class world" and attacks with "these other women are nice, genteel, sexually repressed white girls coming out of pampered homes, and when they arrive at college ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Author Paglia sets a bar stating, "Today these young women want the freedoms that we won," and puts down the young women with, "they don't want to acknowledge the risk" (pg, 144). Hasty Generalization: This citation was used for Straw Man and it falls under this fallacy too, "Today these young women want the freedoms that we won..." this is a generalization that is unrepresentative of the targeted population (pg, 144). "These young feminists today are deluded" attacks targeted populations, which are the young feminists. Below there are many Hasty generalizations found in the third paragraph: "They come from protected, white, middle–class world, and they expect everything to be safe. Notice how it's rarely black or Hispanic women who are making a fuss about this in the media or on campus–they come from cultures that are fully sexual, and they are fully realistic about the dangers of life. But many of these other women are nice, genteel, sexually repressed white girls coming out of pampered homes, and when they arrive at college and suddenly hit raw male lust, the go, "Oh, no!" • 71. Stereotypes Stereotypes are everywhere and can be about anyone. Generalized remarks about gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity or age are common forms of stereotyping. Any time someone makes hasty groupings whether by race, gender or an individual and makes a blanket judgment about them is stereotyping. Military members are no different than society. One of the military's greatest assets is its diverse workforce but with diversity comes stereotypes. As a woman in the military, I frequently encounter stereotypes and have made hasty conclusions about others. This paper will discuss a few stereotypes that I have faced in the military. Women have been serving honorably in the military for centuries; yet, the some of the stereotypes still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When women feel unnecessarily grouped as less committed, their commitment can fall based on lack of trust of their leadership. This feeling will follow them and they may even start to stereotype all men in the military as only promoting and caring for the males within an organization. Also, men who already believed women were inferior to men in the military easily agreed with my supervisors stereotype (Ditto, 2011). According to Kemick (2010)," People are more likely to be aggressive after they've faced prejudice in a given situation," says Inzlict" (p.1). Recently with Don't Ask Don't Tell being repealed, many generalizations have been made about males in the military who have feminine traits and must be gay. The argument is that male flight attendants have feminine traits, a male with feminine traits are gay, so male flight attendants are gay. This fallacy is clearly Begs the Question fallacy. "Often this kind of reasoning is criticized as "circular reasoning," in that the premise that supports the conclusion is in turn supported by the conclusion, and thus goes in a circle" (Mosser, 2011, Sec 4.2). This argument is flawed because I know many male flight attendants in the military who are married with children. They have more feminine traits because they were raised by their mother, grandmother and sisters rather than a strong male figure. This type of prejudice can lead to some males picked on or singled out by other aircrew because of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Modern Technology And Its Impact On Modern Society Essay Modern technology has undoubtedly had a profound impact on contemporary society. However, critics of modern technology emphasize that modern technology has had deleterious effects on young Americans. In The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future: Or, Don 't Trust Anyone under 30, Mark Bauerlein attempts to argue that the young Americans of contemporary society are increasingly unintelligent as a result of modern technology, but fails to elaborate on his criteria for evaluating intelligence. Bauerlein engages in fallacious rhetoric while presenting his argument that today's young Americans are part of the "dumbest generation" because he fails to acknowledge the beneficial impacts that modern technology has had on Americans. His overall argument is diminished by his usage of logical fallacies, while arguments that do not rely on logical fallacies and rather focus on deliberate rhetorical appeals are more cogent. Bauerlein's failure to contribute relevant evidence and his excessive use of logical fallacies ultimately hinders his argument that modern technology has led to the decline in youth intelligence, which is what makes counter–arguments presented by other authors, such as Clay Shirky and Donald Norman's, much more convincing. In his book The Dumbest Generation, Emory Professor Mark Bauerlein emphasizes his belief that most young Americans avoid learning due to their pre–occupation with modern technology. He ... • 75. Gun Control Fallacies The author makes several main claims throughout his articles such as, "national news stories are virtually never done on permit holders stopping mass public shootings," and "the proposals put forward by gun control advocates wouldn't have stopped this attack." The columnist firmly believes in the power of the second amendment and as such, he wants to limit the amount of new laws that control how much the people can hold and use weapons. The claims listed are claims of fact and policy respectively. He gives several examples of how these different prevented mass shootings were not widely advertised and how the ones that were not stopped were all over news stations to convince people that guns are not helping the common people. The author then proposes that the changes that gun control advocates propose will not make a difference and begins to give reasons why which makes this a claim of policy. He says that making a change will not make any change so the laws should be left the same as they are now, or they should be more inclusive to allow more people to carry a concealed weapon. One of the main fallacies that the author uses in his articles is a hasty generalization. He uses the example of the Texas shooter and his bad background that would have prevented a weapons liscence to make the generalization that, " their proposals wouldn't have stopped any of the other mass public shootings in the last couple decades." The author does not back this claim up very well and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Snickers Vs Twix Research Paper Throughout many years there has been a debate between whether Snickers or Twix is the best candy bar overall. When discussed, people have disputed on whether the flavors in the candy bars are tastier, which candy bar is healthier, and which has more appeal in advertising.Even though Snickers and Twix bars are made by the same company (Mars) they are very different. Snickers fans might say that Snickers bars are the best because they have peanuts in the bar, this might be true for the majority people, but not those with allergies. This evidence proves that Twix is the best candy bar. One of the reasons that people think that Twix is the best candy bar is its overall appeal. Furthermore, the wafer adds to the overall appeal. Compared to Snickers which has a chewy nougat, Twix's wafer is crunchy and thick. Also the gold represents the caramel in the candy bar. A good selling strategy to have two bars, so that the customer feels like they are getting more. Having two candy bars helps the customer feel like they are getting more in one package. It also helps with the advertisement. The ads also help sell the product, with the competition between left and right Twix. The ad features two factories, left and right, and each factory thinks the other one copied their candy bar.
