Learn to Read @The Library is an innovative educational program for beginning adult
readers and writers, offering resources and instruction through volunteer tutors and
technology-assisted learning. It operates out of five Learning Centers located at the Bedford,
Central, Eastern Parkway, Flatbush, and New Lots libraries. All learners in our program
are English speaking, older than 17 years of age, and reading below a pre-GED level.
The program is geared toward students in need of a part-time, flexible program. The average
period of instruction per week is four hours. The Learning Centers have ongoing intake for
basic literacy instruction.

Pre-GED Program
www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/ged.jsp
In Brooklyn Public Library's Pre-GED classes, adult learners practice reading
comprehension strategies, writing approaches, critical thinking and problem-solving that
form the foundation of GED success. Classes cover material at the fifth through eighth
grade level. The Pre-GED classes are held 6 hours a week in libraries throughout Brooklyn.
In addition, learners can access computers and supplemental math instruction. Students are
17 years old and older and must attend a registration to enroll in classes.

Young Adult Pre-GED
www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/ged.jsp

between the ages of 17 and 24 who are currently not attending school and reading below
the 6th grade level. Participants in two library sites engage in 15-20 hours per week of
Pre-GED classes, library programs, job readiness and social support services. Students
receive transportation assistance and snacks are available in the classroom. This program
meets at the Sunset Park and New Lots libraries. Students must attend a Pre-GED
registration to enroll.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/esol.jsp

ESOL: English for Speakers of Other Languages, free lessons in English, taught by
certified and experienced teachers. Classes meet 6 hours per week. The library also offers
ESOL conversation groups led by specially trained volunteers. ESOL classes and ESOL
conversation groups are held at Central Library and at several libraries throughout Brooklyn.
Students must attend a registration to enroll.
