Overview September 1, 1939 – September 2, 1945 Involved the “Great Powers”: Allies – Britain, Soviet Union, USA, China, France, and smaller nations Axis – Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and smaller nations “It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilised” (Wikipedia, WWII) Deadliest war in history Holocaust – Mass extermination of Jews Concentration camps  Generally accepted start was September 1, 1939  Germany invaded Poland France declared war on Germany Allies were victorious over Germany and Japan “The Soviet Union and United States emerged as rival superpowers, setting the stage for the Cold War” (Wikipedia, WWII)
Important Battles German invasion of Poland: September 1, 1939 Caused France & Britain to declare war on  Germany two days later Battle of Britain July 10, 1940 – October 31, 1940 German air campaign over Britain preparing for  invasion Germany failed in the air but succeeded against  Britain’s Royal Navy Attack on Pearl Harbor: December 7, 1941 Hawaii Operation/Operation Z Japanese surprise attacks on U.S.  Pacific Fleets at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii  Caused United States to declare war on Japan and enter WWII
Axis Collapse, Allied Victory September 2, 1945 December 16, 1944 - Germany made  an unsuccessful attempt to split up Allied forces Mid-January, 1945 -  Soviets attacked Poland February 1945 – Western Allied  Forces invaded Western Germany March, 1945 – British, American, and Chinese  forces defeated Japanese in Burma Late April, 1945 - Soviet forces attacked  Berlin April 29, 1945 – German forces surrendered to Italy April 30, 1945 – Hitler committed suicide April 30, 1945 – Military defeat of Third Reich May 7, 1945 – German forces surrendered to Western Europe May 8, 1945 – German forces surrendered to Soviets August 15, 1945 – Japan surrendered to Allied Forces September 2, 1945 – Axis surrender documents signed
Casualties Estimated deaths - 60 million 20 million soldiers 40 million civilians Soviet Union – 27 million  1 out of 4 were killed or injured 85% of deaths were on Allied side Mostly Soviet & Chinese 15% on Axis side Estimated 12 million deaths occurred in concentration camps 1.5 million by bombs 7 million in Europe from varying causes 7.5 million in China from varying causes Nanking Massacre in Japan Several hundred thousand Chinese were raped and murdered Japanese military killed 3 million – 10 million civilians
