2. THE SKIN
 The skin is the largest organ in the body covering
about 2 square meters.
 It protects us from injury and infections, water heat
and cold.
 Helps regulate our body temperature, keeping us
warn in cold conditions and cool in warm
conditions.
 It absorbs vitamin D from the suns energy.
Our Skin Does A Lot To Protect Us So We Should
Protect it.

3. WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?
 Skin cancer is the abnormal and uncontrolled
growth of cells of the skin.
 There are 3 types of skin cancer:
 Basal Skin Carcinoma
 Squamous Skin Carinoma
 Melanoma

4. SKIN CANCER IN IRELAND
 Between 2007 and 2009 there were 8,053 cases of
skin cancer.
 720 of these cases were Melanoma (National Cancer
Registry, 2011)
 This makes Skin Cancer IRELANDS MOST
COMMON CANCER
 More common in men (30%) than women(29%)
(National Cancer Registry, 2011). This maybe due
to more men than women working and playing
sports outdoors.

6. MELANOMA
 Most Serious form of Skin Cancer.
 One of the few cancers that affect young people
 Occors in the melanocytes (cells that give your hair
and skin its colour)
 It occurs on parts of the skin exposed to sun light
(U.V.B rays are the primary cause for sunburns and
skin cancer)
