Who's the historian in your classroom? Do the students get to watch (and listen) to the teacher be historian? I have spent my career developing teaching strategies and assembling resources that foster the student as historian. This downloadable SlideShare accompanies my workshop in “Teaching with Documents.” Don't think of it as a presentation. It's a online guide to resources and includes strategy illustrations from my workshop. That's certainly what you would have seen early in my teaching career. I was the one doing most of the reading, reflecting and synthesizing of historic material. I thought my job was to distill it all and simplify for consumption by my students. It took me a few years to realize my job was to get the students to be the historians (and economists, anthropologists, etc). Since then I have spent my career developing teaching strategies and assembling resources that foster the student as historian. This downloadable SlideShare accompanies my workshop in “Teaching with Documents.” Don't think of it as a presentation. Writing Exercise: Interview Summary/Synthesis For this assignment, you will submit only the FINAL copy as there is no DRAFT option. This assignment is designed to help inform a topic that interests you, and the information you gather here will be used in your Proposal Letter assignment. For this assignment, you should be interviewing a person who has expertise about a topic you are interested in. Please note that you should be conducting the actual interview; you should not be summarizing an interview conducted by someone else. Part #1: Choose a Research Topic and an Interviewee You do not need to submit this portion in writing, but you do need to accomplish this in preparation for your research assignment. In preparation for your research proposal letter in the next topic, you will need to choose a topic for your proposal. This research proposal letter will be directed to an audience who can create change (Congressperson, business administrator, or other similar audience.) In the proposal, you need to suggest a change or a solution to a current problem. Examples of strong proposal topics would be things like funding ideas for an animal shelter, starting a recycling program in a community, suggesting a better plan for public transport, or another idea that interests you. You will be proposing solutions for these issues. Choose a topic that you are passionate about and for which you will be able to develop at least one solution. While this information should be enough for you to choose a topic, please consult the assignment sheet within Topic 7 if you have more questions about this assignment. Once you choose a topic, it’s time to choose a credible expert to interview on that subject. In other words, you should avoid choosing an interviewee who is a close friend or family member unless that person truly is an expert in the field. This credible expert should have 10+ years of experience in his or her discipline. Choose an interviewee who not only could offer some specific details about the problem but one who may also be able to offer suggestions of a plausible solution. Use the information contained in the lesson presentation to secure and conduct a successful interview. Part #2: Summarize and Synthesize Your Interview When you summarize and synthesize, you take the smaller pieces (the sections of the interview) and develop them into one cohesive piece. Doing this exercise will help you prepare for the research proposal letter, where you will need to incorporate at least a few ideas from the interview. To successfully summarize and synthesize, you might find it helpful to follow this sequence for your essay: Provide Background Information: In your introductory paragraph, introduce your audience to your interviewee. What is his/her name? What is his/her experience? If relevant, where is the interviewee employed? Summarize the Interview: While you want to avoid the all-too-predictable ques.

Summer 2019 1 Policy Memo Assignment Instructions (be sure to read all 7 pages) For the final assignment you will write a brief memo, advocating for a psychology--based policy solution for a particular social issue. First, choose a social issue that you think should be addressed (if it is not currently being addressed) by the government (federal, state, or local) or that it should be addressed differently; and the solution(s), at least partly, should be based on psychological research. You can choose any issue that either was covered or not covered in this class, except for the suspension/expulsion issue that I discussed in my lecture. You may choose any of the covered course materials to support your evidence-based solution(s). You can also find additional scientific literature to provide support to your claims. Your Memo should include the following information: 1. Description of the social issue that you believe the government needs to address differently; and explain why the government should be concerned with the issue. 2. Describe any governmental program(s) or law(s), if any, that are already in place to address the issue. If none exists, state that. Explain why more needs to be done (e.g., is the law/program ineffective?) 3. Discuss the complexity of the issue (please refer back to my “wicked problems” lectures and reading by Rittel and Webber, 1973). 4. and finally explain why a new policy based on psychological research will be more effective than what is currently in place (if anything). Explain how psychological research can shed more light on the issue and its potential solution. USE THE TEMPLATE BELOW TO WRITE YOUR PAPER REFER TO THE GRADING RUBRIC FOR ADDITIONAL HELPFUL HINTS Summer 2019 2 Policy Memo To: Name of the individual or government organization that should read this memo From: Your First and Last name Re: [Insert Your Main Message/Proposal/or Conclusion] ___________________________________________________ Executive Summary (about one or two paragraphs) This part of your memo should provide a clear and concise summary of the memo (background, analysis, and recommendations). Highlight major ideas and draw together key points, as this may be the only part of the memo that the reader be willing or able to read. Make every word count. Background (about two or three paragraphs) Briefly provide background information on the social issue. The purpose of this section is to get your reader up to speed on the issue and the policy area that he/she may not be familiar with. Analysis (this is the main body of your memo) Describe the “wickedness” of the issue; and what, if anything, has been done to solve it. Then, discuss the psychology of the issue, and explain how psychology can help address it. Cite at least 5 different academic sources; at least 4 must come from psychological literature, published i.

Social Problem Research Project: Introduction For the research project, which will span the last few modules, you will choose a problem in society that you feel needs a solution or improvement. Then, you will research the problem, including its causes and effects, and propose a practical solution (or two) to the issue. You will argue your problem in a researched, academic essay. This assignment has four major parts: Part 1: A memorandum where you will acknowledge your purpose and goals in a formal writing format (100 points due in Module 6) Part 2: Annotated Bibliography in which you list and detail your sources (100 points due in Module 6) Part 3: A digitial presentation, where you will organize and detail your intended essay’s research via PowerPoint or similar program. (100 points due in Module 7) Part 4: An argumentative research essay for the academic community, where you will detail the problem and its potential solution(s) persuasively with credible research for evidence and backing (200 points due in Module 8) Topic Selection It’s important for you to choose a topic that you are passionate about so that you are more invested in its research. I will not choose a topic for you, but I do have some guidelines: Off-Limit Topics: If the major backing for a topic roots itself in opinion, morality, or religious belief, then it is not an effective topic for an academic inquiry. For those reasons, please avoid the following topics: abortion, religious preference, death penalty, marijuana use, assisted suicide, and gay marriage. Overly General Topics: Your essay will be about 5 pages long; you are not writing a book. Therefore, you need to choose a topic that is manageable. Topics that are too broad include gun control, child abuse, global warming, obesity, sex trafficking, violent media, teen pregnancy, bullying, or drug abuse. Nevertheless, these topics aren’t completely unavailable to you; if you’re interested in one of these ideas, you need to narrow it to a smaller central argument. (See below.) Narrowed, Manageable Topics: Avoid choosing a broad, complex issue that cannot be easily solved. Since you only have a few weeks to work on this paper and to propose effective solutions, you should narrow your topic down into a feasible focus. For example, instead of “gun control,” you could narrow the focus to “A problem in society is that many guns are bought and sold without proper background checks and training.” With this topic, you can research more effectively. As you narrow your topic, make sure you can state it as a problem (e.g. “A problem in society is _________.). Moreover, you should begin to imagine a practical solution for the problem. For example, a solution for your problem would not be that “guns must be eliminated everywhere”; this is too broad and too problematic. A Word of Caution: It’s important that you narrow your topic effectively, but be sure not to narrow too much. For this assignment, you should choose.

A Paragraph Model in Colours This model shows the part of an academic paragraph, using colours to indicate the various elements. Note that this is a “free” paragraph, not based on a class reading. Note, also, that while this may be a useful model for students, if they use the colour system to construct their paragraphs, they must also do a final version in plain, black print. (This version is enlarged so that it is visible on the classroom screen, but finished work should always be in 12-pt font, usually Times New Roman.) Teaching international students has taught me as much as I hope it has educated my students. One of the first things I have noticed is how much more knowledgeable I have become about the world in theory and practice. To help, I took courses in teaching methods specifically for non-English students. These courses were designed to show both cultural and linguistic differences in many languages. My courses included ESL from Ministry of Education in Ontario and TESL at St. Mary’s and all were really interesting; but of course the most effective has been the positive attitudes and hard work of the students, themselves. My hope is that this is all making me a much more skillful instructor, too. Understanding the questions my students may have in advance is important to effective teaching. Now I can often anticipate the types of material that will need explaining to my students, so I can try to find out what they will need to know ahead of time. Next week, for example will be Thanksgiving, a holiday which is specific to North America. To explain what it was, though, I needed to check the dates for the American Thanksgiving, which isn’t until November 27. . I believe that the coursework and all of the experience have made me much more thoughtful as a person, too. The actual teaching experience and interaction with so many different students has helped me to understand more about the world as well as myself. Now I understand that different students will respond to information according to their cultural worldviews, and I can see how I am the same. During recent exercises, I had to explain the games of baseball and hockey, as they are not played in most of the countries from which my students come, but we’ve had some great mutual discussion about soccer, which we all know. So, having to draw upon so many different types of understanding has made teaching international students the most satisfying activity I can think of, and one I hope to be doing for a long time. Course description · Upon completion of the Applied Management Project, each student will be able to: · Identify a specific current management issue. · Develop a problem or issue statement · Develop a reference list related to your proposed research topic and problem/issue statement. · Develop introductory background information relative to the specific management issue. · Discuss the specific management issue and identify related organizational implicati.

Wizards are very useful for creating a good user experience. In all businesses, interactive sessions are most beneficial. To improve the user experience, wizards in Odoo provide an interactive session. For creating wizards, we can use transient models or abstract models. This gives features of a model class except the data storing. Transient and abstract models have permanent database persistence. For them, database tables are made, and the records in such tables are kept until they are specifically erased.
