Yams and sweet potatoes are often confused but are actually different plants. The name "yam" was given to sweet potatoes by enslaved Africans who brought the word "nyami" from their language to refer to the sweet potato, which resembled the yam. True yams are only found in tropical regions and African, Caribbean and Asian markets, can grow very large, and have bark-like brown skin and various colored insides.
