Statistics 2 to 3% of people identify as lesbian, gay or bi- sexual Many individuals do not divulge this information due to fear of rejection and negative connotations Nature vs. nurture Evidence supporting both sides
Processes & Techniques Grieving Process (parents) - Denial, depression, anger, bargaining, acceptance - Typical to experience some or all these stages; however,   	does not have to be linear “Coming out” process for homosexual individual as well as parents - Parents also experience “coming out” to other family 	members as well as friends, so it’s a process that the 	entire family is involved in
Processes & Techniques Cont… Stage in the family life cycle Family dynamics as well as stressors can impact the “coming out” process;  make it clear that these dynamics and stressors are not a result of their sexuality Communication training Work on verbal responses and communication with your child, as well as how the child will respond to questions and concerns from the parents
Processes & Techniques Cont… Problem- solving training The family as whole needs to be involved in how to appropriately handle the information, and how they can agree on boundaries, if any are needed
Coming out to oneself and others Three phase sequence Feeling different - Sexual questioning in regards to attraction and the 	self Confusion - Experience an inner struggle & deep sense of isolation - Alcohol & drug use as a form of coping -  Suicidal thoughts: Unfortunately, many young people 	commit suicide due to feeling inadequate and 	confused, which can lead to bullying
Coming out to oneself and others Self- acceptance - React positively to strengthen the individuals view 	& create a valid, meaningful, fulfilling identity - Contact with other lesbian, gay, and bi- sexual 	individuals is important for reaching this phase
Education Sociological Theory Dispels myths & stereotypes, provide realistic notion of quality of life homosexual men & women can expect Provide guidance regarding lifestyle adaptations (Social adjustment) Focus attention on appropriate questions and timeframes Provides education regarding homosexual lifestyle
The path to acceptance and support Increase the parents education and move them towards acceptance Improve communication and problem solving abilities Increase self- confidence in order to lead to self- acceptance Talk openly with your child and vice versa to keep communication open and honest
