Human Sciences Seminar Reflection
When reading about the sciences, human science specifically, I learned
numerous new things, but also that it cannot it is not very accurate because
humans cannot be predicted. During the discussion, Jessy and Mint stated that
they believe it is hard to measure a human’s reaction because they cannot be
predicted. I agreed and said that the human sciences tend to uncover trend about
human nature, not set laws.Throughout the seminar, we also covered that the act
of prediction itself may affect the predicted behavior of the human. This makes
experiments and observations extremely hard to do because the conditions
would have to be so controlled. Also, Jessy, Jump and I made an analogy to an
experiment we were shown in our psychology class. The experiment consisted of
a naturalistic observation to find out people’s natural reactions to a certain
situation. In this experiment, someone acted as if they were injured in a public
place, such as a train station, and the point was to see how many people would
pass by before someone helped the “injured” person. The experiment was
repeated two times. One with a person who had more casual, sloppy clothes on,
and the second was one with a man in a suit, dressed up nicer. It took over 40
passerby’s before the first person was helped, but for the second it only took
about 5. From these results, we can assume that moral judgment and standards
affect humans and their behaviors and reactions.
