Games are tools to connect you with the people you love (or those you want to get to know). But how can we effectively design games for the purpose of bringing people together? This talk presents a design philosophy for “Heads Up” gameplay — gameplay that brings your attention to your environment and the people around you rather than your screen. A “Heads Up” game embodies these values: Eye Contact: Players engage in face-to-face interactions with each other Conversation: Players actively converse with each other using a relatable vocabulary that’s easily understood by spectators Physical Contact: The game encourages playful physical contact between players Context: The game makes use of the physical environment it’s being played in Flexibility: The game adapts itself to different environments and skill sets Personality: Players can express their personalities through their chosen style of play These qualities, when working effectively together, create a memorable shared experience for those involved. To demonstrate how to practically apply the “Heads Up” design philosophy, this talk presents a series of prototypes and finished games that explore this space. Each game will be related back to the “Heads Up” design values as a measure of its success. At the end of the talk, attendees will understand both the value of “Heads Up” design as well as the practical ways to incorporate these values into their own designs.

A talk I have at GDEX 2022, the Midwest Gaming conference. The theme this year was art among other things and I did a talk on how AI art tools are changing, everything. This is a space right now largely ignored in biz circles but it is the very foundation of next. Staying Sane in Startup Columbus, my ignite talk. #cmhstartupweek This deck features a few of my "hive" comic doodles. I've been doodling on startups, tech, trends, vc, biz, dev, themes for 5 years now, another thing I do and rare expose to anyone other than me. Many of these doodles are likely funny only to me and are almost always hinged or connected to a related story or context i was experiencing at that time. The "Hive" is satirical, dark, often negative, and down right bizarre take on the insanity of the whole scene. These little people run companies, attempt to make things and rubberneck on the valley effect of our time. Some day I will publish a book of them. There are many. (65 or so). Formula for computing your BS meter is: who you are + reputation / context - caffeine --------------------------------------------------- current BS reserves / get to the fucking point X time that = your current BS reserve level Now that % level dictates how much you can endure in any given startup could be or would be conversation. For example, my friend Nick, has a .09% reserve level, his tolerance for total startup bullshit is nearly negative, i mean sure he'll acknowledge your presence but enduring the rabbit hole, not happening. Now BrianZ, has a slightly higher reserve level of 3%, high mostly because he does events like Wakeup Startup, etc, but it fluctuates with work loads. Five years ago I had bs reserve level of nearly 60%, meaning i was an enduring puppy for startup bs, eager for the prize of wtf'ism and more. Sadly today I'm hovering around 30%, cause you're all potentially my client. enjoy!

LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?
