Tioga Library
Building
University of
Washington
Tacoma, WA
Project Description
As job captain for the University of Washington’s Tioga
Library Building Project, I was instrumental in complet-
ing a refined yet flexible design which allowed for future
growth of the University of Washington Tacoma campus.
Throughout the development of this project I participated
in dialogue between consultants, contractors and the
University of Washington. Although I was instrumental in
coordinating the design of the interior spaces, my primary
role was to lead the effort on detailing the exterior of the
building.
The design of building sought to be a modern and
light-filled, while responding to its historical context. For
instance, the envelope is finished with an assorted dark
red-brown terra cotta cladding and board formed con-
crete - incorporating the historic nature of the surround-
ing buildings. Another fundamental component of this
building was a skyway allowing access from the existing
library over the corridor to the new library building. The
Ken Avery building is to be constructed in 2011.

7. Project Description
As the primary person developing and writing the Seattle
Academy Master Plan, I worked with a team of architects
to investigate the existing infrastructure at Seattle Acad-
emy of Arts and Sciences. Together we created an effec-
tive development plan for the future of this unique and
exciting urban school. One of our primary goals was to
create a master plan that allowed for the future develop-

ment of the school. This included resolving issues related
Projects to limitations of available space as well as the diversity
of faculty and student needs. As part of the process,
many meetings were held with school staff to integrate
knowledge regarding the school’s values and ambitions.
The final master plan included several different phased
development plans with corresponding cost estimates.
Seattle In addition to writing the master plan, I was involved in
Academy all aspects of the project. I reviewed existing conditions,
Master developed base plans, and created a Revit model of the
Facilities main school block. I also played a key role in program and
Plan master planning development meetings with school staff
Seattle, WA and consultants.

Master Plan
& Phase 1
Project Project Description
Portland, OR As the primary developer of the Westminster Presby-
terian Church Master Plan, I was both fascinated and
challenged by the multifaceted design questions of this
project. The church complex had been developed in many
different stages over the past 120 years, leaving fourteen
different floors and many way finding and organizational
challenges. One of the primary goals of this project
included facilitating universal access throughout the
building, along with providing adequate and accessible
restrooms.
As the primary person working on this master plan I was
involved in all aspects of the project. Through my partici-
pation in user group meetings and site investigations, I
was able to document the complexities of the existing
conditions. I established base plans and communicated
with consultants and other team members to develop
different design options. Because of the success of
the master plan, THA Architecture was chosen to move
forward with the phase one project of the master plan.

Project Description
On the Vistas Assisted Living Center project I was responsible for design
and documentation through the design development and construction
documents phases. As part of a team, I designed many of the common
spaces within the building. Through the use of Sketchup and Vectorworks
I helped to clarify the design intent of these common spaces. In addition, I
drafted exterior details for the building.

In looking at the library of today one must ask how
it is working to address contemporary notions of
disseminating the written word. What has the library
been, what is it, and what may it become. In the de-
sign of this library I look at the enigmatic nature of
the written word. The library of the past contained
the written word but is containment the purpose to
which the library is today? Is there more to a library
when all of the text of that building could probably
fit on a laptop computer? In the form of this library
I seek to involve an interpretative space because
the reading of literature is an interpretative act.
