THE SPINNING®
EXPERIENCE
4 SPINNING®
5SPINNING®
6 SPINNING®
Spinning® is about empowerment, fun and achieving
results. It’s about the right kind of ride for you, whether
it’s a dance party in Ibiza or a climb through the Alps
in the Tour de France, a holiday-themed ride or a
candles-only meditative journey.
We invented group indoor cycling. Spinning is the
global leader in indoor cycling education, equipment,
classes, events and community.
Developed from real road cycling, Spinning combines
three basic hand positions and five core movements
that are simple, fun and easy to learn. Uniquely
tailored to suit a wide range of abilities and fitness
goals, the Spinning program and patented Spinner®
bikes deliver a personalized workout, incredible
calorie burn and personal challenge—all at a self-
directed pace.
We love outdoor cycling–the thrill and challenge,
the solitude and camaraderie, the power and magic
of riding on beautiful roads.
Back in 1991, we started our company with a single
question:
How can we bring that authentic cycling
experience indoors?
Spinning brings together deep cycling experience,
innovative and authentic indoor bike design,
challenging and exhilarating workouts, and know-
ledgeable, engaging instructors. Rest assured that
everything we create is rooted in indoor cycling’s
deepest heritage and expertise.
7SPINNING®
More facilities choose Spinner® bikes and Spinning®
education than any other indoor cycling program.
Why? Because our 22 years of experience, brand
recognition and reputation for superior bikes and
education make for enticing, exciting classes that keep
riders coming back again and again.
With expert coaching by a Certified Spinning Instructor
and energizing, cycling-inspired rides that combine
sound training principles, inspirational music and a
unique mind/body philosophy, the Spinning program
has helped millions of people get into the best shape
of their lives. Whether you’re new to the Spinning
program or have been riding for years, we provide
all the tools you need to achieve your health and
fitness goals.
For 22 years, the Spinning program and patented
line of Spinner bikes have defined the indoor cycling
category—training more than 200,000 instructors
at over 35,000 facilities and reaching millions of
enthusiasts in more than 80 countries worldwide.
With a distinct core philosophy, solid programming
and bikes designed to fit all shapes, sizes and abilities,
the Spinning program has always had the singular
goal of bringing health and fitness to every lifestyle.
What is Spinning? Spinning is an experience:
the original, authentic, exhilarating cycling
experience.
Welcome to Spinning. We hope you enjoy our

CLASSES
At the heart of the Spinning® experience is the Spinning class–a journey,
a training ride, or a themed experience–led by a Certified Spinning Instructor.
Classes range from sport-specific rides to energetic journeys filled with
motivation and fun.
In a Spinning class you’ll find hard-core athletes brimming with the latest
technology riding next to grandmothers brimming with soul, all getting
what they want out of the ride, whether it’s getting into shape or getting
ready to race, tuning in or zoning out, or just enjoying the inspiration,
fun and camaraderie of a group ride.

EVENTS
Spinning is also a regular presence at fitness conferences worldwide,
including the World Spinning and Sports Conditioning (WSSC) Conference.
The WSSC Conference has continued to serve the needs of the fitness
industry by providing fitness professionals with cutting-edge programming
and education. The WSSC Conference is the only annual conference that
features extraordinary Spinning theme rides and workshops as well as
sessions exploring the latest fitness trends—every year is different as we
strive to offer the latest technology and equipment.
Another annual event that is much-beloved by the Spinning community is
Spinning Experience. Since 2002 it has been the largest and most unique
Spinning event in Europe with participants from all over the world! The
event features more than 500 Spinner® bikes in a two-day event ending in
a six-hour Spinning marathon presented by best-in-class presenters from
the international Spinning Master Instructor team.

FACILITIES
Our engagement with and support of our community extends beyond the
riders and instructors—for club owners, we walk you through developing
a sustainable, successful, profitable Spinning® program at your facility.
One way is to host a workshop: or Instructor Training, keeping your facility
on the cutting edge of fitness. When you host a Spinning training at
your facility, you arm your staff with the skills they need to provide your
members with safe and inspiring workouts—without spending thousands
on travel and hotels. In addition to being a convenient way to get all of
your instructors trained at once, hosting workshops is a great way to create
exposure for your Spinning program and find new instructors. We’ll promote
the training on our website and via emails to potential instructors in your
area, as well as giving you exclusive access to promotional tools such as
our online Design Studio that you can use to customize flyers and spread
the word to your staff and members.

CHARITY /
PARTNERS
Spinning® is so much more than an indoor cycling class. In addition
to evolving the world’s best-performing indoor bikes, accessories and
instructor education, we’re a global community of over 80 countries,
25 languages, 140 Master Instructors, 35,000 licensed Spinning facilities,
hundreds of thousands of active Spinning instructors, countless events and
group rides every year and millions of riders around the globe. In addition
to our unparalleled classes and support, Spinning programming offers
local, regional and global events that keep this international community
inspired and connected.
We also partner with many charities, such as the American Heart
Association. One of our biggest events is Spinning Nation, an annual event
to raise money for Go Red for Women, a campaign to bring awareness
to heart disease. A national event open to Spinning facilities, riders from
all over the country collect donations from friends and family to sponsor
their ride for the event day. Spinning Nation brings together the Spinning
community while raising money for a good cause that is close
to our hearts, with 100% of proceeds going to Go Red for Women.
Through the years, Spinning has held or participated in a number of charity
events, including Ride to Recovery, Spinning Nation and other causes.
About
The American Heart Association’s
Go Red For Women movement
was created by women, for
women. Because our health
is non-negotiable, because we
have the power to save our lives,
and because the best force for
women is women.
Mission
Go Red For Women encourages
awareness of the issue of women
and heart disease, and also action
to save more lives. The movement
harnesses the energy, passion
and power women have to band
together and collectively wipe out
heart disease. It challenges them
to know their risk for heart disease
and take action to reduce their
personal risk. It also gives them
the tools they need to lead a heart
healthy life.
Spinning, a brand of Mad Dogg
Athletics, Inc., is a proud supporter
of Go Red For Women.

INSTRUCTORS

of Spinning. They deliver the Spinning experience day in and day out.
We work hard every day to empower our instructors with the very best
training, bikes, equipment, continuing education and ongoing support
through our global SPIN® network.
Our mission is to empower our instructors to give their students the best
indoor cycling experience on the planet. They are a very, very special
group of people and we want to make them feel that way.
We also have advanced levels of instruction in areas like heart rate
training, periodization and training with power to ensure that the education,
training and skills of our instructors are the very highest in the world.

BIKES
As the creators of the indoor cycling
category, we are committed to offering
authentic bikes that feel great and
meet the high standards we set for the
Spinning® program. A bike should work
so well that you don’t have to think
about it. It should seamlessly respond
to the rider’s input, feel comfortable
for the duration of a long workout,
and stand up to the kind of punishment
that gym and studio bikes take day
in and day out.
CREATORS OF INDOOR CYCLING
We created the Spinner® bike in 1987 as
a training
tool for road cycling. The bike was designed using the
same geometry as a real road bike, staying true to the
positioning and biomechanics of cycling. We added
a fixed-gear weighted flywheel to create the inertia
necessary to give the bike a feeling of movement and
to pull the rider’s legs through the entire pedal stroke.
We’re always improving. The careful engineering of
the best features of road bikes into Spinner bikes has
made it the most popular choice in fitness facilities
and homes around the world. With over 25 years
of experience building indoor cycling bikes, we are
always evolving and progressing both our design
philosophy and the world-class components we use
to build what are simply the best bikes on the market.
We know what it takes to exceed the expectations
of your members—and your maintenance department.
See Chapter 3: Commercial Bikes, Pedals
& Accessories and Chapter 6: Consumer Bikes
& Accessories for more information.
19SPINNING®
Seat and Head Tube Angles: Spinner® bikes have
72° seat and head tube angles, comparable to what
you will find on most road bikes, and for good reason.
There is scientific evidence that the angles on the
Spinner bike improve both performance and comfort.
Spinner bikes allow riders to produce the most power
with the least amount of stress.
Saddle and Handlebar Post Adjustment: Both the
saddle and handlebar posts easily adjust up and
down to accommodate a wide range of heights and
body types. Every rider that walks into your facility
will be able to properly position the saddle in relation
to the pedals for proper knee flexion and extension
throughout the pedal stroke.
Q factor: Another element that is important for
comfort and performance is the Q factor, which is the
measured space between the pedals. Spinner bikes
are made with a comfortable Q factor that is consistent
with that of outdoor road bikes to help deliver better
biomechanics through the hips, knees and ankles.
Materials: The Spinner bike is made of a material
that will withstand the force of a rider up to 350 lb
(163 kg) and still facilitate as close to maximal
muscle recruitment as possible for both male and
female participants.
Crank Arm Length: Spinner bikes feature crank
arms of the standard 170 mm (6.7 in) length, and the
adjustability of the bike enables riders of all heights
to ride with optimal power. Research throughout the
decades has indicated that, for the average-sized rider,
optimal power can be achieved with the standard
170 mm crank arms.
Drivetrain and Flywheel: All Spinner bikes come
equipped with a fixed gear. The authentic feel of
the road is established via an externally weighted
flywheel, which ranges from 31-50 lb
(14-23 kg), depending on the model. The combination
is a great training tool because the momentum assists
the rider’s feet with moving smoothly through the
pedal stroke and the two dead spots at the very top
and bottom of the pedal stroke, improving pedaling
technique and efficiency.
Pedal Systems: Spinner bikes come with a variety of
pedal systems that allow riders to use athletic shoes
or clip in with cycling-specific shoes. The ability to
clip in replicates the feel of a road bike, reduces
foot fatigue and enables full use of the pedal stroke,
improving stability and efficiency.

THE PERFECT
SPINNING® STUDIO
We help Spinning® facilities be the
best that they can be because we
know that a well-designed room
and environment help create a great
Spinning experience and lead
to a sustainable, successful Spinning
program.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be expensive—
something as simple as changing the bike arrangement
and orientation while playing with the lighting to
create a particular mood, can transport your riders
to another world and keep the room fresh and exciting
for members.
Spinning studios around the world are as unique as
the places they’re in and the people that ride in them.
But there are some universal principles to creating the
perfect Spinning studio, wherever you may live.
ROOM DESIGN
Some of our facilities have the luxury of designing
their Spinning studio from scratch. Others have to work
with the rooms they’ve got. Whatever the size and
style of the room, we support all of our official Spinning
facilities with design principles we’ve accumulated
from over 20 years of indoor cycling experience.
What is the optimum number of bikes? How are the
bikes arranged? How should the bikes be oriented
and arranged. What is the best staging and control
center for the instructor? How can we ensure that every
bike position has adequate air flow and temperature
control? We can help you answer all these questions
and more in your quest to develop the perfect
Spinning studio.
FLEXIBILITY
Almost any new Spinning studio will excite people
today, but the great Spinning studios carry that
excitement into the future by building in flexibility
to adapt to fit almost any kind of event, including
fundraisers, themed classes, performance rides
with statistics on video monitors, instructor workshops.
1
29SPINNING® FACILITIES
AUDIO VIDEO
One of the most common topics that comes up from
both instructors and riders alike concerns audio and
video. After 20+ years teaching Spinning® classes,
we know the exact makes and models of microphones,
speakers and audio set-ups that can stand up to the
rigors of multiple classes a day.
Providing flexible, high-quality video in your facility
gives your Instructors and riders the opporutnity
to create a variety of great Spinning experiences,
both in classes and as a room for members to use
outside of class time. Format and content options
include projection onto walls and/or screens, rider-
specific computer statistics, music videos, edited
ride or themed videos, video conferencing for global
events, approved member videos and more.
COMMUNITY BUILDING
The right kind of rooms encourage lingering and
gathering, giving members an opportunity to connect
with each other and with instructors, building the
Spinning community in your facility. Members benefit
from having access to the world’s best indoor cycling
experience, and you benefit from an engaged and
loyal community.
CUSTOMIZED STUDIO DESIGN CONSULTING
For those that need more help in designing the very
best studio for their needs, we also offer custom
consulting for creating your ultimate Spinning studio,
including build-out options, sizing and orientation,
temperature control and other key aspects of
studio design.

highest-caliber instructors in the country and maybe
even the world.
Charleston RIDE™ offers the authentic Spinning experience. Their purpose

of science, spirit, strength and stamina, then mix it all up with killer music,
the best bikes in the world, and a mind-blowing AV system. Top it off with
a massive dose of passion, laughter, community, and belief in the human
spirit, and therein lies the formula for life-transformation.
At Charleston RIDE they believe that only good things will come when you
train the body, inspire the heart and energize the mind—this is the balance
for a life of goodness and health.
How We RIDE™
Simply put, the Spinning program is
a mixture of science and spirit. It is
rooted in the physiology of cycling

the physical and mental aspects of
training must co-exist equally. One
has no meaning without the other.
When both are in balance, you can
soar beyond your wildest dreams.
This is the formula for success in
health and life no matter who you
are. It ain’t rocket science; we think
it’s a pretty darn simple philosophy
to live by, and we love it. We think
you will, too. And, we have a whole
heck of lot of FUN. I mean, life is
just too short. If it doesn’t make you

TM
We race; we ride; we know bikes. As the creators
of the indoor cycling category, we are committed to
offering authentic bikes that feel great and meet the
high standards we set for the Spinning® program. A bike
should work so well that you don’t have to think about
it. It should seamlessly respond to the rider’s input, feel
comfortable for the duration of a long workout, and
stand up to the kind of punishment that gym and studio
bikes take day in and day out. We sweat over every
last detail on our Spinner® bikes, from how they move
to how they move you.
We invented the modern indoor cycling bike—and
we’re always improving. The innovative design of the
Spinner is revolutionary, integrating the geometry and
components of high-performance racing bikes into fully
adjustable, fixed gear stationary models. The careful
engineering of the best features of road bikes into
the Spinner bike has made it the most popular choice
in fitness facilities worldwide. With over 20 years of
experience building indoor cycling bikes, we are always
evolving and progressing both our design philosophy
and the world-class components we use to build what
are simply the best bikes on the market. We know what
it takes to exceed the expectations of your members—
and your maintenance department.

COMMERCIAL BIKES,
PEDALS ACCESSORIES
34 SPINNING®
35COMMERCIAL BIKES
36 SPINNING®
Seat Head Tube Angles:
Spinner bikes have 72°
seat and head tube angles,
comparable to what you will
find on most road bikes, and
for good reason. There is
scientific evidence that the
angles on the Spinner® bikes
improve both performance
and comfort. Spinner bikes
allow riders to produce the
most power with the least
amount of stress.
Crank Arm Length: Spinner
bikes feature crank arms of the
standard 170 mm (6.7 in) length,
and the adjustability of the bike
enables riders of all heights to
ride with optimal power. Research
throughout the decades has
indicated that, for the average-
sized rider, optimal power can be
achieved with the standard 170
mm crank arms. Bullet-proof Morse
taper bottom bracket is the most
durable in the industry.
Pedal Systems: Our
commercial pedals are
equipped with Morse Taper
threadless connections to
provide an industrial strength
pedal connection that is not
available on any other bike.
COMMERCIAL
SERIES
Designed for the commercial facility and studio
environment, these bikes are built to withstand the
rigors of class after class, all day long. The original,
best and most popular indoor cycling bikes on the
planet, these bikes are for commercial facilites or a rider
that wants the same premium, heavy duty bike at home.
Features that you will find on many of our Commercial
Series bikes include:
37COMMERCIAL BIKES
Saddle and Handlebar Post
Adjustment: The saddle and
handlebars can be adjusted
both up and down and fore-
aft easily. Every rider that
walks into your facility will
be able to properly position
the saddle in relation to the
pedals for proper knee flexion
and extension throughout the
pedal stroke.
Q Factor: Another element
that is important for comfort
and performance is the Q
factor, which is the measured
space between the pedals.
Spinner bikes feature industry-
leading Q factor dimensions
that are consistent with that
of outdoor road bikes to help
deliver better biomechanics
through the hips, knees
and ankles.
Drivetrain and Flywheel:
Most Spinner bikes come
equipped with a chain-driven
fixed gear. The authentic feel
of the road is established
via a perimeter weighted
flywheel, which ranges
from 41-50 lb (18.6-22.7 kg),
depending on the model. The
combination is a great training
tool because the momentum
of the flywheel smooths out
the pedal stroke to eliminate
the “dead spots” at the top
and bottom of the pedal
stroke. In this way the rider
improves their technique and
pedaling efficiency.
Materials: The Spinner®
bikes are designed and
fabricated with materials that
will withstand the force of
a rider up to 350 lb (163 kg)
and still facilitate as close to
maximal muscle recruitment
as possible for both male
and female participants.

PROFILE:
JOHN COOK

JOHN COOK
JOB TITLE: SPINNING® CHIEF DESIGNER
CURRENT HOME: Ventura, CA
John Cook has extensive professional design experience
that spans more than 25 years. A large part of his career
was spent at BMW Designworks USA, and his design
experience also includes tenure at Star Trac®, where
he did the industrial design for the Spinner® NXT and
Spinner Blade. He has also received many patents and
international design awards including the IDEA, Good
Design, ID magazine and Red Dot. John received a
BA with a specialty in Industrial Design from Cal State
University, Northridge. He currently lives in Ventura,
California with his wife, two daughters, two dogs, ten bikes
and one well-used Spinner NXT.
54 SPINNING®
What is your design philosophy?
I love bikes, I’ve loved bikes my whole life, and I’ve
designed bikes throughout my entire career, working
on everything from components to complete bikes.
A Spinner bike is quite a bit different in that it presents
the challenge of designing a functional, dynamic bike
that stays in one place. For example, the Spinner
Blade and Blade ION™ were inspired by time trial
riders—I love how you can look at a static photo of
a great time trial rider and they look like they’re going
fast. That’s just one of the images I use for inspiration.
Function, reliability and durability are our primary
design drivers and we temper all of those things into
an easily useable, dynamic form. Our goal for our
riders is to design a Spinner that fits so right and feels
so good during a class that the bike goes away and it
becomes all about your experience.
We touch every single inch of the bike, from the
handlebars to the adjustable feet so that the
experience is great for both the rider and the gym
owner. I like to tell people that our commercial bikes
are like rental cars. We have to design products
that can take the abuse of being ridden 24/7/365 and
still deliver a fantastic feel for the rider. For example,
if you really look closely at our Spinner Blade you
JOHN COOK
“Spinning® is like surfing—a good
Spinner® bike or a favorite board
is a fantastic vehicle but it’s that
Zen-like feeling of a glassy wave
or a great ride that keeps you
coming back for more.”
55COMMERCIAL BIKES
will notice that we have taken great care to define
our shapes so that every surface that faces the rider
is soft and inviting even though there are some very
definitive lines on the bike. We want the overall feel
to be dynamic but still friendly and approachable.
What inspires you?
I like making things that make people feel better.
Spinning® helps people improve their fitness, which is
really important, but it also changes their lives. I’m so
inspired by the riders, their journeys, even what they
go through to get to a six am Spinning class—the bike
is just one part of the experience and our instructors
and riders bring their best every day. We have to
make sure that our products empower our community.
It matters.
One of the things that was really cool for me was to
meet some of the people on The Biggest Loser who
had expressly come up to me and said “I always knew
that no matter what if I could just get on that Spinner®
bike it would be okay,” and it was something they
used every day. I like that we can make a product
that makes so many people feel great and improves
their lives.
What’s unique about Spinning®?
I’ve designed a lot of products for a lot of different
brands but truly Spinner bikes are the best products
you can design because they work in conjunction with
fantastic programming. We not only make a great bike
to ride, but we teach you how to ride it, and we teach
others how to teach you how to ride it. We teach safe,
enjoyable ways to ride it. It’s pretty rare in design to be
able to work in such a comprehensive space where our
products support education and education supports
our products, a combination that allows us to create
a unique and authentic experience.
We are always looking to make our bikes better—the
design switch is always on. We are constantly getting
detailed input from an experienced team of Master
instructors, Spinning instructors, studio owners, and
riders as well as our partners and “in-house” groups
and enthusiasts.
It’s really satisfying to work on a product that helps
support such an incredible experience. We are all tied
to that great Spinning experience. Some of our riders
even get “Spinman” tattoos. That’s an honor and a
privilege, and it’s something that drives me every day.

58 SPINNING®
SPINNING® INSTRUCTOR
TRAINING
The Spinning® journey starts with a single pedal stroke,
but being a Certified Spinning Instructor requires the
passion to commit to the most comprehensive training
and continuing education program in the industry.
Certified Spinning Instructors are some of the most
highly-trained and best-supported fitness professionals
in the world and they all share one trait—dedication
to the concepts for which the Spinning program is so
widely known and loved. Our drive to create great
instructors starts with the Spinning Instructor Training,
a comprehensive workshop led by a Spinning Master
Instructor that includes practical and theoretical
concepts and teaches instructors everything they
need to know to begin teaching the Spinning program.
With a regularly updated Spinning Instructor Manual,
based on the latest science and progression in the
field of indoor cycling, instructors learn how to create
safe and effective Spinning program training sessions.

use and apply the RPE scale in classes, and how to
complement heart rate training with RPE.
MUSIC, MOVEMENT, MOTIVATION
Music is a powerful class element used to enhance the
rider’s experience and make classes more than just
another ride. Learn to correlate music and rhythm with
movement to elicit an emotional response. Remember
to check out our Spinning playlists, posted weekly!
FOUR HOUR WORKSHOPS
CADENCE, HEART RATE AND CLASS DESIGN
Understanding the relationship between cadence,
resistance and intensity is key to coaching classes

Learn how, why and when to use high intensity training,
and more importantly, when not to.
PROFILE DESIGNS AND HEART RATE GAMES
Improve fitness by focusing on how the body responds
to both rest and stress, as muscle cells rebuild to
slightly higher levels after each cycle of effort and
recovery. Enhance training knowledge to achieve
improved physiological adaptations. Learn new course
designs, creative ideas, drills and techniques to use
immediately in Spinning classes.
CONTRAINDICATIONS TO THE SPINNING®
PROGRAM
Coach riders through movements that will empower
them to safely reach their goals. This workshop
presents the biomechanical, physiological and even
philosophical reasons why we don’t perform certain
moves in Spinning classes. Instructors will also
introduce acceptable modifications that achieve the
same goals, and discuss alternative ways to
be creative.
SPINNING® LANGUAGE AND VISUALIZATION
Learn to communicate and coach effectively with
descriptive images and metaphors that promote
greater energy, confidence, focus and ability.
Instructors will be able to tap into students’ senses with
vivid imagery and evoke an emotional response to
jump-start their thinking.
MENTAL TRAINING: APPROACH AND SKILLS
As we develop fitness and physical abilities, we
also need to sharpen our mental edge for ultimate
performance. Learn tools, techniques and skills to
find a center with power, develop complete focus
and practice calmness with strength.
SPIN® FLEX: RESISTANCE TRAINING
FOR SPINNING®
Resistance training is a necessary component of
any fitness program and a great complement to the
Spinning program. SPIN® Flex is a combined format
that uses flex bands, tubing and dumbbells to train
the major muscles groups, paying special attention to
the upper body. In this workshop learn basic muscular
anatomy and physiology. Come away with sample
SPIN Flex class formats that you can teach right away.
SPINNING® AND CORE TRAINING
Core training develops strength and stability in
the body’s core, which translates to more cycling
power, improved balance and enhanced functional
movement. This workshop explains the anatomy
and biomechanics behind core training and provides
dozens of basic standing, mat and stability ball
exercises. Plus, receive SPIN Core class formats to
integrate into a Spinning program class schedule.
SPIN® YOGA
In this workshop, learn cycling-specific asanas (yoga
poses) that help elongate muscles, release tension,
deepen the breath and improve posture. Plus, receive
Spin and Yoga class formats that can be integrated

What makes Spinning® special?
Spinning® created the commercial indoor cycling
space. It is fun, challenging, stimulating,
and rewarding, and it’s an all-inclusive activity.
It is a healthy activity that can be done at any age
throughout a person’s life.
What do people need to know about Spinning®?
Literally anyone can do it at any time. Spinning has its
roots in road cycling and the Spinner bikes have the
same geometry as road bikes. The Spinning Instructor
Education Program is based on current cycling science
research, and is the world’s most extensive indoor
cycling program.
How is Spinning® different?
Spinning is unique because of the incredible resources
committed to developing industry-leading programs,
products and services. Our amazing team of highly
experienced Master Instructors teaching around the
world is something no one else can offer. And, finally,
the most important aspect of the program is the
wonderful experiences that hundreds of thousands
of people have each and every time that they
participate in a Spinning class.
What does Spinning® mean to you?
Spinning has always supplemented and
complemented my road riding. I use it as a
strengthening component and as a method of

HOME STUDIES
To supplement workshop attendance, instructors
can take advantage of self-paced learning from the
comfort of home, with a book or web-based course
on our website. All courses are developed to enhance
teaching skills with specialized training in areas
like heart rate training, class design, periodization,
performance, weight loss, coaching and more.
Instructors can build their Spinning® resume and earn
the SPIN® Continuing Education Credits (CECs) needed
to keep their Spinning certification current.
RECERTIFICATION LEVEL I
Earn all the SPIN CECs needed for certification
renewal and get the latest Spinning program updates.
This convenient package includes essential topics
like form and technique, class design, music selection,
periodization, nutrition and the mind/body connection.
RECERTIFICATION LEVEL II
The second edition of this popular course allows
instructors to earn all the SPIN CECs needed for
certification renewal in a comprehensive course
that covers essential Spinning program topics. Also
includes the Spinning Instructor Skills DVD.
BREATHING TECHNIQUES
Instructors learn how to channel one of the most
important functions of their body into creating more
efficiency in a workout! Use the concepts in this class
to teach your clients proper breathing techniques
to enhance performance and reduce exercise
stress. Learn about the anatomy of breathing. The
different techniques athletes can use (such as open
diaphragms, chest and back breathing) as well
as exercises that can be used to strengthen the
diaphragm. The course also includes yoga breathing
techniques for added efficiency.
CADENCE, HEART RATE AND CLASS DESIGN
Bring some flair to classes with the cadence drills and
creativity. The Spinning Computer (sold separately)
enables the instructor to continuously monitor riders
pedaling speeds, or cadence, on the Spinner bike.
When the relationship between cadence, resistance
and heart rate are understood, classes take on a new
dimension. This course, co-developed by cycling
expert Joe Friel will teach how to maximize the
efficiency of cadence and the pedal stroke. Learn how
to incorporate cadence drills and heart rate games to
engage students as they train like cyclists out on the
road. This course is recommended for instructors using
the Spinning Computer, but the principles and methods
can be used even without a cadence monitor. Includes
a DVD that demonstrates use of the computer and
various drills.
MENTAL TRAINING
We’ve all heard about the mind/body connection,
but how is it actually applied correctly to exercise?
Create and maintain a bond, as the Spinning program
emphasizes the connection between the mind and
the body in reaching fitness aptitude. This course will
teach ways to reach peak performance, how to use
a single-minded focus and what parasympathetic
stimulation can do for an exercise regimen and
performance day.
PERIODIZATION FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE
Attract more participants to Spinning class by
integrating the concept of periodization or dividing
the calendar year into periods characterized by
different forms of training. This course explains how
to correctly partition the year and includes applicable
factors such as goal setting, Spinning Energy Zones™,
anaerobic training, monitoring heart rate and training
time. Review sample annual periodization schedules
for both new and experienced clients, as well as
competitive athletes.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:
FATIMA BATOOK
Spinning® Instructor
What does Spinning® mean to you?
Spinning® is very dear to me because it means much
more than a “500 calorie burn” class. Being Saudi and
living in Saudi Arabia where women can’t drive, we
can go ride! It is liberation, empowerment and freedom
to me and to many other women. It has helped me
convey my message to women attending my classes
about the true essence of being and how we can
overcome all the constraints we are faced with, no
matter what!
What makes Spinning® special?
Spinning is special because it is true to it’s foundation
of the mind/body connection. It is a powerful
connection through which emotional, mental, social,
spiritual and behavioral factors can be changed
drastically in just one moment. What really is special
about it is that you can be in a mental state of
meditation while in motion.
What do people need to know about Spinning®?
Spinning holds a mirror up to life: whatever we face,
however hard it is, there is a way to overcome it like
every hill you climb and every sprint you conquer.
You become more aware of your thoughts, feelings
and behaviors, plus it’s a great and healthy way to
cope with the stress and problems that are a normal
part of life. It makes you feel good about yourself and
have healthy relationships with a loving, supportive
Spinning community around you.

MASTER INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:
LUCIANA MARCIAL-VINCION, M.A.
Co-owner of Charleston RIDE™ and Team Manager
for the global Spinning® Master Instructor Team
How did you start in indoor cycling?
By force! It’s actually a funny story. I was the Athletic Director at a facility
that was getting the Spinning® program. My GM sent me and my personal
trainers to a Spinning Instructor Training so we could get ready to launch
the program, so I had to attend. My first time on a bike was at the training—
and as an aerobics junkie I really did not enjoy it… I was skeptical about
the shelf life of the “group fitness cycling class” phenomenon. I mean,
seriously, how long could this program last? It’s just riding a bike after all!
Why Spinning®?
The science behind the program is what kept me motivated to continue
my education beyond the initial training. As an exercise physiologist, I
appreciated the strong cycling roots and the foundation in physiology and
biomechanics. I started to understand the remarkable paradigm shift that
the Spinning program was creating in the industry—offering true science-
based group training to everyone in a format that was easy to understand.
No one else had ever done this before, yet the simple art of riding a bike—
an activity familiar to most people—was starting to transform the world!

77SPINNING® PROGRAMMING
Why did you decide to become a Spinning®
Instructor?
17 years ago, I got on board the Spinning train. And
here i am working as an International Spinning® Master
Instructor for the last 14 years, full time for Spinning as
the Master Instructor Team Manager. And I co-own my
own exclusive Spinning studio called Charleston RIDE™.
The mind/body philosophy permeates every aspect
of the program; this in turn creates very emotional and
spiritual experiences for many riders that help fuel
their commitment to transforming their lives. When
you bring people together this way, a very dedicated,
passionate community is built. It is this community that
I thrive on—spending time and training hours with like-
minded individuals that believe what you believe is just
magical, uplifting and powerful.
What do people need to know about Spinning®?
People need to know that here, their story is important.
Everyone has a story to tell and the Spinning
community provides a platform for everyone to share
it—this is the human element that is so powerful in the
Spinning program. Everyone matters, and everyone’s
journey is important and unique. The bike, the Spinning
room, the Spinning community, they all create a
sanctuary, a safe and nurturing yet challenging arena
where everyone can be real, where they can be
themselves, where they can move and breathe and
feel with no judgment.
What does Spinning® mean to you?
My anchor words: Truth. Integrity. Science. Skills.
Dreams. Excellence. Magic. Vision. Transformation.
Authenticity. Accountability. Freedom.
How is Spinning® different from other
indoor cycling programs?
There are many things that set us apart, including
the fact that we created the indoor cycling category.
But it is the ever-evolving continuing education
program delivered by experts in the field that really
raises the bar. Our continuing education is designed
to provide instructors with a comprehensive study
of all aspects of being an indoor cycling coach,
whether through our live trainings, online courses,
home studies, DVDs, podcasts or special events
and conferences. We provide a constant stream of
information ranging from class design, music selection
and physiology to training with power, biomechanics
and coaching skills, just to mention a few, all offered by
an incredibly talented global Master Instructor team.
While each member is distinguished and impressive
with their own array of talents and expertise, there is
one most noteworthy attribute manifested in all,
and that is their unyielding and relentless discipline
in working as a unified team to change the world,
one ride at a time. It is simply a bonus that among
the team we have Ph.D.s, Ironman athletes, business
owners, elite cyclists holding national and international
titles, university professors, world class triathletes,
exercise physiologists, sports therapists, nutritionists,
marathon runners, attorneys, yoga professionals,
personal trainers and group fitness instructors, and the
list goes on. It is simply an amazing group of industry
experts whose aim is to be of service to all and to
deliver excellence beyond measure.

JOB TITLE: CERTIFIED SPINNING® INSTRUCTOR
CURRENT HOME: Cheshire, CT
Jenifer Walsh used to belong to a small women’s gym that had cardio
equipment, weight machines and free weights. They decided to bring
the Spinning program into the gym about a month after she joined.
Prior to being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Jen used to love
long distance road biking, but the disease slowly took her balance
away, and eventually she couldn’t ride on the road any more. The
Spinning instructor at the gym encouraged her to try a class. She
told Jen to go at her own pace and see how she liked it. The rest is
history! She fell in love with the bike again, slowly working up her
endurance enough to make it through an entire class! The passion
she felt coming to classes every day was apparent to everyone. Her
instructor suggested that she go out and become certified, saying
that Jen’s actions would inspire others to try. She got certified in
2008, and doesn’t plan on stopping!

How did you first hear about Spinning®?
I first heard about Spinning after I joined a new gym
in my town. I had no idea what it was all about and
decided to try it because I used to road bike all the
time before I got diagnosed with MS.
What do people need to know about Spinning®?
Some people get intimidated by the Spinning program
because they think they won’t be able to keep up.
Actually, the best part of the Spinning program is that
you can go at your own pace. Spinning is for everyone!
What does Spinning® mean to you?

SARAH MORELLI
European Education and Development Manager
at Star Trac® and Senior International Master
Instructor and Power Specialist Master Instructor
for the Spinning® Program
How did you first hear of Spinning®?
I was lucky enough to watch Johnny G. riding at
tradeshows in Germany and again in Italy and the
UK in the early 90s when Spinning was launched into
Europe for the first time. I remember listening to his
mind/body message and thinking that this is something
special. He even took his time to chat with me and
explain what it was all about.
How did you come to work for Spinning®?
I was selected as Master Instructor for the Spinning
Program in 1999 and attended a week’s training
camp in Verbier, Switzerland. And I was EU Education
Coordinator during the early days too. I am now lucky
enough to work doing something I love and am now
Global Education Manager for Star Trac Fitness
working as Education Representative for Spinning
in the UK and Ireland.
What does Spinning® mean to you?
Spinning to me means community, and a healthy
approach to life. It represents improvement, challenge
and self-awareness that nothing else can truly match.
To share this with other like-minded people is a unique
joy within the fitness industry.
What do people need to know about Spinning®?
Everyone who has not experienced a Spinning class
needs to know that the true and best delivery of the
program is not about how hard you can push yourself,
but how you are given absolute permission to ride
at your own level and learn where your limits and
challenges lie, and then being motivated to achieve
and surpass your goals. When you work within your
limits, you can always achieve and will always want
to return and have fun!

Our Facebook community is very engaged and
involved in our page. You can expect to see an inside
look at what is going on at Spinning Headquarters
and in the Spinning community. We post “Tip Tuesday,”
a weekly helpful fitness tip from our Master Instructor
team and industry professionals, as well as the
Weekly Playlist. The Playlist is created on Spotify
for those countries that have access to it. Facebook
encompasses our global audience, so we frequently
get posts in other languages. We hold contests every
couple of months and sometimes the prize is a
Spinner® bike! Who wouldn’t want to participate
in that?!
We also post events and global rides taking place
around the world. If there is any kind of promotion
going on, you can expect to see that here as well.
Lastly, you’ll often find behind-the-scenes photos and
videos of life at Spinning, holiday celebrations, etc.—
we keep our page as active as possible!

  • 8. 6 SPINNING® Spinning® is about empowerment, fun and achieving results. It’s about the right kind of ride for you, whether it’s a dance party in Ibiza or a climb through the Alps in the Tour de France, a holiday-themed ride or a candles-only meditative journey. We invented group indoor cycling. Spinning is the global leader in indoor cycling education, equipment, classes, events and community. Developed from real road cycling, Spinning combines three basic hand positions and five core movements that are simple, fun and easy to learn. Uniquely tailored to suit a wide range of abilities and fitness goals, the Spinning program and patented Spinner® bikes deliver a personalized workout, incredible calorie burn and personal challenge—all at a self- directed pace. We love outdoor cycling–the thrill and challenge, the solitude and camaraderie, the power and magic of riding on beautiful roads. Back in 1991, we started our company with a single question: How can we bring that authentic cycling experience indoors? Spinning brings together deep cycling experience, innovative and authentic indoor bike design, challenging and exhilarating workouts, and know- ledgeable, engaging instructors. Rest assured that everything we create is rooted in indoor cycling’s deepest heritage and expertise.

Classes range from sport-specific rides to energetic journeys filled with motivation and fun. In a Spinning class you’ll find hard-core athletes brimming with the latest technology riding next to grandmothers brimming with soul, all getting what they want out of the ride, whether it’s getting into shape or getting ready to race, tuning in or zoning out, or just enjoying the inspiration, fun and camaraderie of a group ride. See Chapter 5: Spinning Programming, Events & Community for more information. Josh Taylor working up a sweat at the Mindbody Fit Pro Conference in Marina Del Rey, 2013.
  • 15. 13SPINNING® EVENTS Spinning is also a regular presence at fitness conferences worldwide, including the World Spinning and Sports Conditioning (WSSC) Conference. The WSSC Conference has continued to serve the needs of the fitness industry by providing fitness professionals with cutting-edge programming and education. The WSSC Conference is the only annual conference that features extraordinary Spinning theme rides and workshops as well as sessions exploring the latest fitness trends—every year is different as we strive to offer the latest technology and equipment. Another annual event that is much-beloved by the Spinning community is Spinning Experience. Since 2002 it has been the largest and most unique Spinning event in Europe with participants from all over the world! The event features more than 500 Spinner® bikes in a two-day event ending in a six-hour Spinning marathon presented by best-in-class presenters from the international Spinning Master Instructor team. • 16. 14 SPINNING® FACILITIES Our engagement with and support of our community extends beyond the riders and instructors—for club owners, we walk you through developing a sustainable, successful, profitable Spinning® program at your facility. One way is to host a workshop: or Instructor Training, keeping your facility on the cutting edge of fitness. When you host a Spinning training at your facility, you arm your staff with the skills they need to provide your members with safe and inspiring workouts—without spending thousands on travel and hotels. In addition to being a convenient way to get all of your instructors trained at once, hosting workshops is a great way to create exposure for your Spinning program and find new instructors. We’ll promote the training on our website and via emails to potential instructors in your area, as well as giving you exclusive access to promotional tools such as our online Design Studio that you can use to customize flyers and spread the word to your staff and members. See Chapter 2: Spinning Facilities for more information. Charleston RIDE™ Charleston, South Carolina
  • 17. 15SPINNING® CHARITY / PARTNERS Spinning® is so much more than an indoor cycling class. In addition to evolving the world’s best-performing indoor bikes, accessories and instructor education, we’re a global community of over 80 countries, 25 languages, 140 Master Instructors, 35,000 licensed Spinning facilities, hundreds of thousands of active Spinning instructors, countless events and group rides every year and millions of riders around the globe. In addition to our unparalleled classes and support, Spinning programming offers local, regional and global events that keep this international community inspired and connected. We also partner with many charities, such as the American Heart Association. One of our biggest events is Spinning Nation, an annual event to raise money for Go Red for Women, a campaign to bring awareness to heart disease. A national event open to Spinning facilities, riders from all over the country collect donations from friends and family to sponsor their ride for the event day. Spinning Nation brings together the Spinning community while raising money for a good cause that is close to our hearts, with 100% of proceeds going to Go Red for Women. Through the years, Spinning has held or participated in a number of charity events, including Ride to Recovery, Spinning Nation and other causes. About The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement was created by women, for women. Because our health is non-negotiable, because we have the power to save our lives, and because the best force for women is women. Mission Go Red For Women encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart healthy life. Spinning, a brand of Mad Dogg Athletics, Inc., is a proud supporter of Go Red For Women.
  • 18. 16 SPINNING® INSTRUCTORS Spinning® Instructors and Master Instructors are the faces, hearts and souls of Spinning. They deliver the Spinning experience day in and day out. We work hard every day to empower our instructors with the very best training, bikes, equipment, continuing education and ongoing support through our global SPIN® network. Our mission is to empower our instructors to give their students the best indoor cycling experience on the planet. They are a very, very special group of people and we want to make them feel that way. We also have advanced levels of instruction in areas like heart rate training, periodization and training with power to ensure that the education, training and skills of our instructors are the very highest in the world. See Chapter 4: Spinning Instructor Education for more information. Master Instructor Sarah Morelli at International Master Instructor Days, Italy.
  • 19. 17SPINNING® RIDERS Riders are why we’re here. Whether that’s getting into shape or getting race-ready, tuning in or zoning out, or just enjoying the inspiration, fun and camaraderie of a group ride, our purpose is to empower you. We strive to give you the world’s best indoor cycling Instructors, equipment, classes and community, as well as inspiring, easy-to-follow home workouts so that you can achieve your goals through Spinning®. We’re a global community of 80 countries, 25 languages, 35,000 facilities, thousands of active instructors and 140 Master Instructors, hundreds of regional events and group rides every year, and millions of riders around the globe. No other indoor cycling program or manufacturer even comes close. We know that Spinning is something that is very powerful in your lives. We’re honored to be part of your stories, and thrilled to share them with the world. ABOVE: Riders take part in Saints and Spinners ride at Grand Central Station in New York City
  • 20. 18 SPINNING® BIKES As the creators of the indoor cycling category, we are committed to offering authentic bikes that feel great and meet the high standards we set for the Spinning® program. A bike should work so well that you don’t have to think about it. It should seamlessly respond to the rider’s input, feel comfortable for the duration of a long workout, and stand up to the kind of punishment that gym and studio bikes take day in and day out. CREATORS OF INDOOR CYCLING We created the Spinner® bike in 1987 as
a training tool for road cycling. The bike was designed using the same geometry as a real road bike, staying true to the positioning and biomechanics of cycling. We added a fixed-gear weighted flywheel to create the inertia necessary to give the bike a feeling of movement and to pull the rider’s legs through the entire pedal stroke. We’re always improving. The careful engineering of the best features of road bikes into Spinner bikes has made it the most popular choice in fitness facilities and homes around the world. With over 25 years of experience building indoor cycling bikes, we are always evolving and progressing both our design philosophy and the world-class components we use to build what are simply the best bikes on the market. We know what it takes to exceed the expectations of your members—and your maintenance department. See Chapter 3: Commercial Bikes, Pedals & Accessories and Chapter 6: Consumer Bikes & Accessories for more information.
  • 21. 19SPINNING® Seat and Head Tube Angles: Spinner® bikes have 72° seat and head tube angles, comparable to what you will find on most road bikes, and for good reason. There is scientific evidence that the angles on the Spinner bike improve both performance and comfort. Spinner bikes allow riders to produce the most power with the least amount of stress. Saddle and Handlebar Post Adjustment: Both the saddle and handlebar posts easily adjust up and down to accommodate a wide range of heights and body types. Every rider that walks into your facility will be able to properly position the saddle in relation to the pedals for proper knee flexion and extension throughout the pedal stroke. Q factor: Another element that is important for comfort and performance is the Q factor, which is the measured space between the pedals. Spinner bikes are made with a comfortable Q factor that is consistent with that of outdoor road bikes to help deliver better biomechanics through the hips, knees and ankles. Materials: The Spinner bike is made of a material that will withstand the force of a rider up to 350 lb (163 kg) and still facilitate as close to maximal muscle recruitment as possible for both male and female participants. Crank Arm Length: Spinner bikes feature crank arms of the standard 170 mm (6.7 in) length, and the adjustability of the bike enables riders of all heights to ride with optimal power. Research throughout the decades has indicated that, for the average-sized rider, optimal power can be achieved with the standard 170 mm crank arms. Drivetrain and Flywheel: All Spinner bikes come equipped with a fixed gear. The authentic feel of the road is established via an externally weighted flywheel, which ranges from 31-50 lb (14-23 kg), depending on the model. The combination is a great training tool because the momentum assists the rider’s feet with moving smoothly through the pedal stroke and the two dead spots at the very top and bottom of the pedal stroke, improving pedaling technique and efficiency. Pedal Systems: Spinner bikes come with a variety of pedal systems that allow riders to use athletic shoes or clip in with cycling-specific shoes. The ability to clip in replicates the feel of a road bike, reduces foot fatigue and enables full use of the pedal stroke, improving stability and efficiency.

  • 30. 28 SPINNING® THE PERFECT SPINNING® STUDIO We help Spinning® facilities be the best that they can be because we know that a well-designed room and environment help create a great Spinning experience and lead to a sustainable, successful Spinning program. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be expensive— something as simple as changing the bike arrangement and orientation while playing with the lighting to create a particular mood, can transport your riders to another world and keep the room fresh and exciting for members. Spinning studios around the world are as unique as the places they’re in and the people that ride in them. But there are some universal principles to creating the perfect Spinning studio, wherever you may live. ROOM DESIGN Some of our facilities have the luxury of designing their Spinning studio from scratch. Others have to work with the rooms they’ve got. Whatever the size and style of the room, we support all of our official Spinning facilities with design principles we’ve accumulated from over 20 years of indoor cycling experience. What is the optimum number of bikes? How are the bikes arranged? How should the bikes be oriented and arranged. What is the best staging and control center for the instructor? How can we ensure that every bike position has adequate air flow and temperature control? We can help you answer all these questions and more in your quest to develop the perfect Spinning studio. FLEXIBILITY Almost any new Spinning studio will excite people today, but the great Spinning studios carry that excitement into the future by building in flexibility to adapt to fit almost any kind of event, including fundraisers, themed classes, performance rides with statistics on video monitors, instructor workshops. 1
  • 31. 29SPINNING® FACILITIES AUDIO VIDEO One of the most common topics that comes up from both instructors and riders alike concerns audio and video. After 20+ years teaching Spinning® classes, we know the exact makes and models of microphones, speakers and audio set-ups that can stand up to the rigors of multiple classes a day. Providing flexible, high-quality video in your facility gives your Instructors and riders the opporutnity to create a variety of great Spinning experiences, both in classes and as a room for members to use outside of class time. Format and content options include projection onto walls and/or screens, rider- specific computer statistics, music videos, edited ride or themed videos, video conferencing for global events, approved member videos and more. COMMUNITY BUILDING The right kind of rooms encourage lingering and gathering, giving members an opportunity to connect with each other and with instructors, building the Spinning community in your facility. Members benefit from having access to the world’s best indoor cycling experience, and you benefit from an engaged and loyal community. CUSTOMIZED STUDIO DESIGN CONSULTING For those that need more help in designing the very best studio for their needs, we also offer custom consulting for creating your ultimate Spinning studio, including build-out options, sizing and orientation, temperature control and other key aspects of studio design. • 36. We race; we ride; we know bikes. As the creators of the indoor cycling category, we are committed to offering authentic bikes that feel great and meet the high standards we set for the Spinning® program. A bike should work so well that you don’t have to think about it. It should seamlessly respond to the rider’s input, feel comfortable for the duration of a long workout, and stand up to the kind of punishment that gym and studio bikes take day in and day out. We sweat over every last detail on our Spinner® bikes, from how they move to how they move you. We invented the modern indoor cycling bike—and we’re always improving. The innovative design of the Spinner is revolutionary, integrating the geometry and components of high-performance racing bikes into fully adjustable, fixed gear stationary models. The careful engineering of the best features of road bikes into the Spinner bike has made it the most popular choice in fitness facilities worldwide. With over 20 years of experience building indoor cycling bikes, we are always evolving and progressing both our design philosophy and the world-class components we use to build what are simply the best bikes on the market. We know what it takes to exceed the expectations of your members— and your maintenance department. CHAPTER 3: COMMERCIAL BIKES, PEDALS ACCESSORIES 34 SPINNING®
  • 38. 36 SPINNING® Seat Head Tube Angles: Spinner bikes have 72° seat and head tube angles, comparable to what you will find on most road bikes, and for good reason. There is scientific evidence that the angles on the Spinner® bikes improve both performance and comfort. Spinner bikes allow riders to produce the most power with the least amount of stress. Crank Arm Length: Spinner bikes feature crank arms of the standard 170 mm (6.7 in) length, and the adjustability of the bike enables riders of all heights to ride with optimal power. Research throughout the decades has indicated that, for the average- sized rider, optimal power can be achieved with the standard 170 mm crank arms. Bullet-proof Morse taper bottom bracket is the most durable in the industry. Pedal Systems: Our commercial pedals are equipped with Morse Taper threadless connections to provide an industrial strength pedal connection that is not available on any other bike. COMMERCIAL SERIES Designed for the commercial facility and studio environment, these bikes are built to withstand the rigors of class after class, all day long. The original, best and most popular indoor cycling bikes on the planet, these bikes are for commercial facilites or a rider that wants the same premium, heavy duty bike at home. Features that you will find on many of our Commercial Series bikes include:
  • 39. 37COMMERCIAL BIKES Saddle and Handlebar Post Adjustment: The saddle and handlebars can be adjusted both up and down and fore- aft easily. Every rider that walks into your facility will be able to properly position the saddle in relation to the pedals for proper knee flexion and extension throughout the pedal stroke. Q Factor: Another element that is important for comfort and performance is the Q factor, which is the measured space between the pedals. Spinner bikes feature industry- leading Q factor dimensions that are consistent with that of outdoor road bikes to help deliver better biomechanics through the hips, knees and ankles. Drivetrain and Flywheel: Most Spinner bikes come equipped with a chain-driven fixed gear. The authentic feel of the road is established via a perimeter weighted flywheel, which ranges from 41-50 lb (18.6-22.7 kg), depending on the model. The combination is a great training tool because the momentum of the flywheel smooths out the pedal stroke to eliminate the “dead spots” at the top and bottom of the pedal stroke. In this way the rider improves their technique and pedaling efficiency. Materials: The Spinner® bikes are designed and fabricated with materials that will withstand the force of a rider up to 350 lb (163 kg) and still facilitate as close to maximal muscle recruitment as possible for both male and female participants. = Q Factor

  • 56. 54 SPINNING® What is your design philosophy? I love bikes, I’ve loved bikes my whole life, and I’ve designed bikes throughout my entire career, working on everything from components to complete bikes. A Spinner bike is quite a bit different in that it presents the challenge of designing a functional, dynamic bike that stays in one place. For example, the Spinner Blade and Blade ION™ were inspired by time trial riders—I love how you can look at a static photo of a great time trial rider and they look like they’re going fast. That’s just one of the images I use for inspiration. Function, reliability and durability are our primary design drivers and we temper all of those things into an easily useable, dynamic form. Our goal for our riders is to design a Spinner that fits so right and feels so good during a class that the bike goes away and it becomes all about your experience. We touch every single inch of the bike, from the handlebars to the adjustable feet so that the experience is great for both the rider and the gym owner. I like to tell people that our commercial bikes are like rental cars. We have to design products that can take the abuse of being ridden 24/7/365 and still deliver a fantastic feel for the rider. For example, if you really look closely at our Spinner Blade you JOHN COOK “Spinning® is like surfing—a good Spinner® bike or a favorite board is a fantastic vehicle but it’s that Zen-like feeling of a glassy wave or a great ride that keeps you coming back for more.”
  • 57. 55COMMERCIAL BIKES will notice that we have taken great care to define our shapes so that every surface that faces the rider is soft and inviting even though there are some very definitive lines on the bike. We want the overall feel to be dynamic but still friendly and approachable. What inspires you? I like making things that make people feel better. Spinning® helps people improve their fitness, which is really important, but it also changes their lives. I’m so inspired by the riders, their journeys, even what they go through to get to a six am Spinning class—the bike is just one part of the experience and our instructors and riders bring their best every day. We have to make sure that our products empower our community. It matters. One of the things that was really cool for me was to meet some of the people on The Biggest Loser who had expressly come up to me and said “I always knew that no matter what if I could just get on that Spinner® bike it would be okay,” and it was something they used every day. I like that we can make a product that makes so many people feel great and improves their lives. What’s unique about Spinning®? I’ve designed a lot of products for a lot of different brands but truly Spinner bikes are the best products you can design because they work in conjunction with fantastic programming. We not only make a great bike to ride, but we teach you how to ride it, and we teach others how to teach you how to ride it. We teach safe, enjoyable ways to ride it. It’s pretty rare in design to be able to work in such a comprehensive space where our products support education and education supports our products, a combination that allows us to create a unique and authentic experience. We are always looking to make our bikes better—the design switch is always on. We are constantly getting detailed input from an experienced team of Master instructors, Spinning instructors, studio owners, and riders as well as our partners and “in-house” groups and enthusiasts. It’s really satisfying to work on a product that helps support such an incredible experience. We are all tied to that great Spinning experience. Some of our riders even get “Spinman” tattoos. That’s an honor and a privilege, and it’s something that drives me every day.
  • 58. 56 SPINNING® CHAPTER 4: SPINNING® INSTRUCTOR EDUCATION
  • 60. 58 SPINNING® SPINNING® INSTRUCTOR TRAINING The Spinning® journey starts with a single pedal stroke, but being a Certified Spinning Instructor requires the passion to commit to the most comprehensive training and continuing education program in the industry. Certified Spinning Instructors are some of the most highly-trained and best-supported fitness professionals in the world and they all share one trait—dedication to the concepts for which the Spinning program is so widely known and loved. Our drive to create great instructors starts with the Spinning Instructor Training, a comprehensive workshop led by a Spinning Master Instructor that includes practical and theoretical concepts and teaches instructors everything they need to know to begin teaching the Spinning program. With a regularly updated Spinning Instructor Manual, based on the latest science and progression in the field of indoor cycling, instructors learn how to create safe and effective Spinning program training sessions. Enhance training knowledge to achieve improved physiological adaptations. Learn new course designs, creative ideas, drills and techniques to use immediately in Spinning classes. CONTRAINDICATIONS TO THE SPINNING® PROGRAM Coach riders through movements that will empower them to safely reach their goals. • 77. 75SPINNING® PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTOR PROFILE: FATIMA BATOOK Spinning® Instructor What does Spinning® mean to you? Spinning® is very dear to me because it means much more than a “500 calorie burn” class. Being Saudi and living in Saudi Arabia where women can’t drive, we can go ride! It is liberation, empowerment and freedom to me and to many other women. It has helped me convey my message to women attending my classes about the true essence of being and how we can overcome all the constraints we are faced with, no matter what! What makes Spinning® special? Spinning is special because it is true to it’s foundation of the mind/body connection. It is a powerful connection through which emotional, mental, social, spiritual and behavioral factors can be changed drastically in just one moment. What really is special about it is that you can be in a mental state of meditation while in motion. What do people need to know about Spinning®? Spinning holds a mirror up to life: whatever we face, however hard it is, there is a way to overcome it like every hill you climb and every sprint you conquer. You become more aware of your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, plus it’s a great and healthy way to cope with the stress and problems that are a normal part of life. It makes you feel good about yourself and have healthy relationships with a loving, supportive Spinning community around you. 3
  • 78. 76 SPINNING® MASTER INSTRUCTOR PROFILE: LUCIANA MARCIAL-VINCION, M.A. Co-owner of Charleston RIDE™ and Team Manager for the global Spinning® Master Instructor Team How did you start in indoor cycling? By force! It’s actually a funny story. I was the Athletic Director at a facility that was getting the Spinning® program. My GM sent me and my personal trainers to a Spinning Instructor Training so we could get ready to launch the program, so I had to attend. My first time on a bike was at the training— and as an aerobics junkie I really did not enjoy it… I was skeptical about the shelf life of the “group fitness cycling class” phenomenon. I mean, seriously, how long could this program last? It’s just riding a bike after all! Why Spinning®? The science behind the program is what kept me motivated to continue my education beyond the initial training. As an exercise physiologist, I appreciated the strong cycling roots and the foundation in physiology and biomechanics. I started to understand the remarkable paradigm shift that the Spinning program was creating in the industry—offering true science- based group training to everyone in a format that was easy to understand. No one else had ever done this before, yet the simple art of riding a bike— an activity familiar to most people—was starting to transform the world! • 79. 77SPINNING® PROGRAMMING Why did you decide to become a Spinning® Instructor? 17 years ago, I got on board the Spinning train. And here i am working as an International Spinning® Master Instructor for the last 14 years, full time for Spinning as the Master Instructor Team Manager. And I co-own my own exclusive Spinning studio called Charleston RIDE™. The mind/body philosophy permeates every aspect of the program; this in turn creates very emotional and spiritual experiences for many riders that help fuel their commitment to transforming their lives. When you bring people together this way, a very dedicated, passionate community is built. It is this community that I thrive on—spending time and training hours with like- minded individuals that believe what you believe is just magical, uplifting and powerful. What do people need to know about Spinning®? People need to know that here, their story is important. Everyone has a story to tell and the Spinning community provides a platform for everyone to share it—this is the human element that is so powerful in the Spinning program. Everyone matters, and everyone’s journey is important and unique. The bike, the Spinning room, the Spinning community, they all create a sanctuary, a safe and nurturing yet challenging arena where everyone can be real, where they can be themselves, where they can move and breathe and feel with no judgment. What does Spinning® mean to you? My anchor words: Truth. Integrity. Science. Skills. Dreams. Excellence. Magic. Vision. Transformation. Authenticity. Accountability. Freedom. How is Spinning® different from other indoor cycling programs? There are many things that set us apart, including the fact that we created the indoor cycling category. But it is the ever-evolving continuing education program delivered by experts in the field that really raises the bar. Our continuing education is designed to provide instructors with a comprehensive study of all aspects of being an indoor cycling coach, whether through our live trainings, online courses, home studies, DVDs, podcasts or special events and conferences. We provide a constant stream of information ranging from class design, music selection and physiology to training with power, biomechanics and coaching skills, just to mention a few, all offered by an incredibly talented global Master Instructor team. While each member is distinguished and impressive with their own array of talents and expertise, there is one most noteworthy attribute manifested in all, and that is their unyielding and relentless discipline in working as a unified team to change the world, one ride at a time. It is simply a bonus that among the team we have Ph.D.s, Ironman athletes, business owners, elite cyclists holding national and international titles, university professors, world class triathletes, exercise physiologists, sports therapists, nutritionists, marathon runners, attorneys, yoga professionals, personal trainers and group fitness instructors, and the list goes on. It is simply an amazing group of industry experts whose aim is to be of service to all and to deliver excellence beyond measure. • 80. 78 SPINNING® JENIFER WALSH JOB TITLE: CERTIFIED SPINNING® INSTRUCTOR CURRENT HOME: Cheshire, CT Jenifer Walsh used to belong to a small women’s gym that had cardio equipment, weight machines and free weights. They decided to bring the Spinning program into the gym about a month after she joined. Prior to being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Jen used to love long distance road biking, but the disease slowly took her balance away, and eventually she couldn’t ride on the road any more. The Spinning instructor at the gym encouraged her to try a class. She told Jen to go at her own pace and see how she liked it. The rest is history! She fell in love with the bike again, slowly working up her endurance enough to make it through an entire class! The passion she felt coming to classes every day was apparent to everyone. Her instructor suggested that she go out and become certified, saying that Jen’s actions would inspire others to try. She got certified in 2008, and doesn’t plan on stopping! GLOBAL COMMUNITY If our International Master Instructors are the backbone of the Spinning® program, it is our instructors who are the lifeblood. I was lucky enough to watch Johnny G. riding at tradeshows in Germany and again in Italy and the UK in the early 90s when Spinning was launched into Europe for the first time. I remember listening to his mind/body message and thinking that this is something special. He even took his time to chat with me and explain what it was all about. How did you come to work for Spinning®? I was selected as Master Instructor for the Spinning Program in 1999 and attended a week’s training camp in Verbier, Switzerland. And I was EU Education Coordinator during the early days too. I am now lucky enough to work doing something I love and am now Global Education Manager for Star Trac Fitness working as Education Representative for Spinning in the UK and Ireland. What does Spinning® mean to you? Spinning to me means community, and a healthy approach to life. It represents improvement, challenge and self-awareness that nothing else can truly match. To share this with other like-minded people is a unique joy within the fitness industry. What do people need to know about Spinning®? Everyone who has not experienced a Spinning class needs to know that the true and best delivery of the program is not about how hard you can push yourself, but how you are given absolute permission to ride at your own level and learn where your limits and challenges lie, and then being motivated to achieve and surpass your goals. When you work within your limits, you can always achieve and will always want to return and have fun!
