Something to think about…. You are asked by Miss Rice to leave the room and run an errand to the office for her. As a good kid, you willingly accept the task that is asked of you without complaint. When you return your books have been shredded and everyone else was given candy and homework passes and there is no more for you. To top things off Miss Rice is giving a pop quiz on what the students learned while you were running the errand.  What do you do?
Trouble in the Republic & the need for a new type of government
Plebeian Problems! A. PLEBIAN CONCERNS (? # 3) No money to provide for their family and farms because they were away at war Their farms were ruined in the war & they have to sell to the patricians Slaves were taking their jobs
Plebeian Problems! B. So what did the Poor do? They sold to the rich and moved into town where you were hired at very low paying jobs. Their apartments were horribly cramped, dirty, and were prone to fire and collapse.
Plebeian Problems! C. Why should the rich people of the government be worried? The poor could REVOLT/REBEL!!!
Plebeian Problems! (? # 4) D.  If you were a patrician how would you 	control the very unhappy plebeians?  	What makes people happy? Provide cheap food Provide entertainment “Bread and Circuses”

March 21, 2011 Objective: Trying to fix a troubled Republic The good, the bad, and the ugly The one and only….Julius Caesar Homework: Julius Caesar Dictator or Reformer…. I will tell you at the end of class if we have this homework…it depends on how far we get.  Warm Up: In your passport….make sure you date your entry…. Name two things you have done to help someone else out and did not expect a reward in return.
Plebeian Problems! Do these items really fix the poor person’s problems?   NONONONONONONO! What will help them? If the government chooses to pass laws that are helpful and not just try to entertain them
A New Government is formed! To help the poor people a new government is formed and emperors and tribunes both bad and good rise up to meet the challenges of Rome.
Rich Helping the Poor (? # 5) Tiberius and Gauis Gracchus What happened to them for helping? They were both killed by the Senate! What is another word for killing a political person? Assassination
Poor People and the Army (? # 6 & 7) Most plebeians joined the army in order to have a job. Who made the Roman Army Professional and paid the soldiers? Marius What was the problem? The soldiers were loyal to the  general and not the government
