Kansas Girl Scouts Journey to NASA
Girls Given the Tools to Start Their Own Astronomy Clubs
Two very lucky Kansas Girl Scouts,
accompanied by two local volunteers
ventured to the Goddard Space Flight
Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD
July 18-23 to learn about NASA’s Science
Mission Directorate (SMD).
This Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland team,
including Girl Scouts Allison Stukey (Wichita) and
Shelbey Logan (Salina), along with volunteers Fred
Gassert and Brindi Stables were one of only 10 Girl Scout
Council teams (out of 109) selected to participate. These
Girl Scouts are now responsible for organizing at least five
trainings with adults and/or older Girl Scouts, and to form a Girl
Scout Astronomy club with the help of a Girl Scout-NASA core
volunteer mentor.
“Visiting Goddard Space Center helped me understand the
inner-workings of NASA,” said Stukey. “This opportunity allowed
me to understand the career I would need to obtain and how to
follow my dream and receive a job at NASA.”

Raising our Voice for Girls
Girl Scouts Advocate on Behalf of Healthy Media Images for Girls
Did you know that by the time a girl graduates from high school she will have spent 15K hours watching TV versus 12K hours
in school? This does not include the hours spent online, playing video games, listening to the radio, or reading magazines!
The Girl Scout Research Institute’s latest survey, Girls and Body Image (2010), revealed alarming statistics about teen girls’
relationships with the media and fashion industry.
– Nearly 90 percent of girls surveyed say the media places a lot of pressure on girls to be thin.
– 60 percent of girls compare themselves to models.
– Body dissatisfaction can result from this comparison, and leads to serious health problems, such as unhealthy
eating and dieting habits.
– More than half of girls (55 percent) admit they diet to lose weight.
Over the next couple of years, we’ll be partnering with GSUSA to bring more awareness about the issue to our members
across Kansas, as well as to the community at large. We’ll be conducting community roundtables across the state to inform
and educate using media-awareness activities from the new Journey, “It’s Your Story, Tell It” during program activities.

5. A Crime Scene? NO! It’s a Silver Award Project

Looking for a new, unique way to introduce the rich history of Kansas art to your girls? The Birger Sandzén Memorial
Art Gallery in Lindsborg has put together an educational portfolio that is available for loan completely free of charge.
The portfolio is comprised of a portable carrying case of interesting papers, prints, and other materials about
Birger Sandzén. Sandzén was a Swedish immigrant that settled in the Smoky Valley of Kansas in 1894 to teach art at

11. Scouts Shopped ‘til They Dropped

Summer Camp 2010
Bloomin’ With Pride
Girl Scouts of Sumner county were seen participating
in the 25 Year Tulip Time Parade in Belle Plaine last
Spring. The girls used several meetings to design and
paint decorations for their float. This is an annual event
in the Belle Plaine area and a great time to show every-
one what team work can do. These Girl Scouts joined
in the community garden theme by become flowers
themselves. They even turned the pickup that pulled
them into a ladybug winning a plaque for their float!
“Safety Sense” at 911 Camp
This June girls spent the day with Sedgwick County
Sheriff officers, EMS and Fire Fighters as they learned
about personal safety, what to do in an emergency and
how to help others. Girls learned what each emergency
service does and how to call 911 the right way. There was
even a little splash at the end of this hot day!
