Writing the Essay:

A short response to a given topic of
             interest
Test Expectations:

• You will have 30 minutes to write an essay
• Write only on the topic given
• How WELL you write is more important than how MUCH
  you write
• Organize thoughts before writing
• Write more than a short paragraph (write at least three)
• Make sure that you indent each paragraph
• Don’t write outside of the margins
• Use legible handwriting
• Write in blue or black pen
Steps for the writing process:
brainstorm, write (in an organized fashion), and
                   self-check.
• First, brainstorm. Create either an outline or a visual
web diagram containing all information you wish to
include in your essay. Write out your thesis statement
(whether you agree or disagree with the prompt, and
three reasons why) and also list those reasons with
specific examples and facts as back-up.
• Next, you should write the essay in a
  structured, organized, and well-thought-out manner.
• Finally, you should self-check your work using the
  acronym COPS, which stands for
  Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling.
If you were granted the power to change one thing about your
community, what would you change and why?

                                   Notes:
Thesis: If I had the power to change one thing about the community in which I live, I
would put a stop to the trash that litters our roadsides.

I. Wild animals suffer
 A. Get entangled
 B. Digest toxic wastes

II. Environment gets polluted
  A. Non-biodegradable material
  B. Trash sits along the sides of the roads

III. Those who litter should be held responsible
  A. Hefty fines should be given
  B. Those who litter should clean highways
Write your essay topic in the box exactly as the question reads:
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

     as instructed?

• ___Did I allow enough time to write my final copy on the lined
     sheets?
• ___Did I write about the topic that was given?
• ___Did I include details to add interest?
• ___Did I follow rules for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and
     capitalization?
• ___Can others read my handwriting?

• Describe, in detail, a team sport that interests you.
• Explain why a particular adjective describes you perfectly.
