11. Arulmigu Karumariamman Temple is a South Indian Hindu
temple set beside the Penang Bird Park. Built in 1997, it is
noteworthy because it has the largest and tallest (72ft)
rajagopuram (main sculpture tower) in Malaysia. The RM2.3
million temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Arulmigu
Karumariamman
Located in Seberang Jaya, the entrance to the
rajagopuram, at 21ft-tall and 11ft-wide, is also the largest
in the country. Arulmigu Karumariamman Temple started
out as a temple for estate workers living in the Paduma
Estate in Perai, until the area was turned into a township
in the 1970s. At the urging of residents the State
Government gave the go-ahead to build a new temple
and work began in 1996.
