Redefine the Value of Veterans’ Cultural Potential in the
                      Nowadays Society

                                 Mo, Kuo-Chen

Key Words:
Veterans / Cultural Potential / Social Resources / Social Values / Estate /
Active policies / Social Welfare / Self-confidence

Background:
The ROC Government relocated to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War in 1949;
meanwhile, many soldiers who came from different provinces of Mainland
China followed the military to stay in Taiwan. We often use “Veterans” as
a narrow sense to represent these soldiers nowadays.
These veterans were forced to participate in the war while their teenager
period, and therefore had few choices to study or learning for themselves even
couldn’t make plans for their own life. In a word, they spent their golden age of
life for the Government they believed.
Some of these veterans held the last chance switched to another line of
business under the Government counsel after the Government releasing
theme. On the other hand, part of them became the lower level of class in the
society till now.
Of course the Government continues taking care of them in some social
welfare policies; nevertheless, most of them still have less respect to live in
nowadays society in Taiwan.

Culture:
Veterans have diverse culture from their different background. For example,
their dialect, traditional foods, and folk custom…etc. Most of them know the
Chinese culture much more than general people who live in Taiwan, like
Tang poetry, calligraphy, Chinese traditional painting, Chinese traditional
opera, and Chinese comic dialogue…etc.
They have so many precious cultural treasury, but without be treated with
respect by most people. We are now getting loss for these arts after they pass
away by one after another.

Presentation / Popularization / Preservation:
Veterans now disperse in different places or areas, besides, there is no any
place especially for them meeting, collecting or presenting themselves in
Taiwan. They would rather actively obtain their self-confidence than depending
on the Government’s passive welfare policies.
