2. Human Trafficking is any type of human trade. This
includes the sex trade, forced labor, and organ harvesting.
Organ harvesting: the forced removal of organ from humans (living and dead) to be reused for unauthorized medical transplants.
Forced labor: the unpaid enslaving of individuals for work by threat of destitution, persecution, or even death.
Sex Trade: the millions of individuals who are trafficked against their will for sexual exploitation, for money or unpaid.
Sex trafficking is one of the most out of control and widespread
aspects of human trafficking.
It is estimated that 3 million girls (along with a small percentage
of boys) are currently involved in this this sex trade worldwide.
3. Where?
• Sex trafficking occurs all over the
world, even in the U.S.
• The places worst affected were
post Cold War Eastern Europe
and Indochina.
• After the fall of communism
people in these areas were left
with no money or means to
provide for themselves & their
families.
4. Ukraine
The mecca of the sex trade is Ukraine. Kiev and
Odessa being the two most popular.
Kiev was ranked number one by Traveler’s Digest as the top
destination for beautiful women. Cities With the World's Most Beautiful Women
Odessa is a port city with constant traffic from poor parts of Eastern
Europe. Along with a poverty stricken and corrupt police force.
The girls in these cities are known for voluntarily involving
themselves in the sex trade. This makes putting a stop to it more
difficult.
A 19 year old Ukrainian girl named Masha told Time:
“Don’t be confused, nobody takes us by the hair and drags us.
Those are the gates of freedom for a lot of us.”
5. Sex Trafficking in the
United States
• The sex trade in the U.S. is run by gangs, pimps, and other criminal organizations. It has become a
lucrative money maker for them.
• These men often find young women on the streets who are homeless, runaways, and troubled. They are
vulnerable and it makes them easy targets. They are promised marriage, employment, and education.
• Girls between 12 and 14 are their ideal targets. However, there have been cases where girls
as young as 9 have been sold into sex rings.
• Often times these young girls are given drugs and easily become addicted, thusly needing the money
prostitution provides. They also form a sense of dependence on their pimps as well as the money. They
don’t know anything else, and they don’t believe there is a way out.
• Most cases of sex trafficking in the U.S. involve children under 18.
• 293,000: American children at risk of becoming domestic sex trafficking victims
• 50+%: Domestic sex trafficking victims classified as runaway youth living on the street
• 55%: Approximate number of street girls who become entangled in prostitution networks
• 75%: Girls entangled in prostitution networks controlled by a sex trafficker or pimp
• 12-14: Average age girls trafficked for sex are first victimized
6. Half the Sky
Beginning as a book,“Half the Sky:Turning Oppression into Opportunity forWomen Worldwide” started the Half the
Sky Foundation.
Founded in 1998 it is a non profit organization that helps oppressed women to better their lives.
Authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn head the organization that provides information and help to sexually exploited women
everywhere. They believe the first step in taking a stand against sex trafficking is education for the women who think they have no way
out.
They provide insight on the steps to take to fight these problems and better themselves. The foundation supplies the funds to help these
women out of prostitution and have a wide following of celebrity advocates to help spread their cause, including Hilary Clinton and Meg
Ryan.

7. Education
• Education is the first and most important step in ending sex trafficking.
• One common factor throughout the world in prostitution, is that most women don’t
receive the help or education they need in order to enhance their lives. Providing
them with education can lead to them finding alternative opportunities to better
themselves.
• This education is important for men as well as women. In some places the sex trade
is culturally normal. This is due to a widespread lack of education and morality.
• The rising threat of AIDS and the lack of knowledge people have is also an issue.
• Men tend to go for younger women, because they believe they are less likely to be infected.
• Some men also believe that having sex with a virgin is a cure to the epidemic.
• This puts many innocent young girls at risk of being raped or killed by aggressive men, and often
times men infected with HIV/AIDS. These girls often times aren’t prostitutes, just victims.
