2. Genre and Narrative conventions: You were instructed to select a genre or create a hybrid for your short film. Which genre(s) did you choose? -The genre we used for our short film is a chick-flick combined with a fantasy. How did you follow codes and conventions? -We chose to go with a ‘modern-day Cinderella’ for our initial film idea, which combines romance, comedy and also fantasy. We followed the codes and conventions of these genres and also looked at other films of a similar genre in our research. We had the typical characters of the boy and girl, who meet each other and fall in love, we also had a character of the fairy god mother, who represents the fantasy element of the genre. We also followed the codes and conventions of having a happy ending, as we noticed this was quite typical of a film of our chosen genre. How did you challenge the codes and conventions?-We challenged the codes and conventions with our editing techniques, we used a black and white effect for the beginning of our film, which shows the character of ‘Cindy’ cleaning and doing the household chores and generally being a stereotypical Cinderella. We decided to challenge the conventions by changing from black and white to colour when Cindy’s transformation for the party is complete.

3. You were also asked to use a narrative theory to help tell your story. Which did you choose and how did you apply them?-Levi Strauss binary opposites We used this particular narrative theory to help tell our story because it highlighted the different between the characters, which was key for our short film to be successful. The audience needed to be aware of who was who in the film, to differentiate between characters so this theory was very helpful in showing that.
