Lessons from Local Delivery - Social Enterprises Delivering AONB Projects
1. LESSONS FROM LOCAL DELIVERY -
SOCIAL ENTERPRISES DELIVERING
AONB PROJECTS
Birmingham 28 Mar 2012
2. OPENING A DOOR:
Social Enterprises - examples from Protected
Landscapes - Arnside & Silverdale/ Tamar Valley /
Brecon NPA Green Valleys,
Social Enterprise as a vehicle for RDPE/HLF Legacy -
1SW Adventure Cycling Project
Can Social Enterprises help us grow collaborative
working or sell AONB services?
4. ARNSIDE & SILVERDALE:
The AONB Executive supported the establishment of a Community Interest
Company to work alongside the existing AONB Service and the AONB Landscape
Trust.
The Company is directed by the Community Interest Statement, compliance with the
annual Company reporting regulations and a required statement of compliance to the
CIC Regulator.
The "community interest test" includes: Carrying out environmental, landscape and
habitat conservation and enhancement Facilitating community involvement and
understanding of the environment - Providing education and training in countryside
management & sustainable development - Producing, managing and marketing
sustainable local products and
Promoting renewable energy programmes and energy conservation initiatives.
5.
6. OTHER EXAMPLES:
Brecon Beacons Green Valleys CIC - working to
promote renewable energy by cross financing micro
hydro and wood fuel generated from community
managed woodland,
Tamar Valley Trust mechanism beginning to generate
income from assets and a range of associated
enterprises.
7. CIC AS RDPE LEGACY:
1SW is a £4.6m RDPE Funded Off Road Cycling Initiative covering the 6 counties in
the south west.
Protected Landscapes are partners and sit on the Executive Board that has agreed to
set up a CIC as the legacy vehicle for the future management of the 6 cycling “hubs”,
the Adventure Cycling Web Map and the ongoing development of a “warmer”
welcome for cyclists in our protected landscapes.
Critically the CIC is emerging with 18 months of RDPE funding left and will look to
generate income by selling skills and services realted to cycling inside and outside
protected landscapes.
8. SO?
Understanding the opportunity to unhook AONB
delivery from 3 year cycles of grant funding,
Understanding how through social enterprises AONB
delivery can tap into local skills, energies and
commitments,
Understanding how AONBs can best work with social
enterprises both individually and collectively.
