Grant Application Draft: Leap Frog Tag
November 11, 2011
Grant Information (As provided by We Are Teachers):
Tag is the #1 selling* reading system, using amazing touch technology to bring interactive books
and maps to life. By using technology like Tag in your classroom, you expose your students to
reading in a way that's fun and motivational. With that in mind, we're exploring the creative
ways that teachers go beyond the basics and use Tag in their classrooms to promote literacy.
If you had a Tag system in your classroom:
How would you use it to encourage a love of reading and sharing books?
What kind of small group activities would you construct to help kids learn to read?
How would you use it in games to build reading and writing skills?
Submit your best idea for using Tag technology in your classroom and you could win a prize
package of $100 to fund your project, an iPod® Touch to capture your project in action and a
LeapFrog® Tag™ Reading System bundle to turn your idea into reality. Enter by the deadline,
then rally your colleagues, students and friends to vote for your submission and help you win the
prize package!

What is your project idea?
My project idea would benefit Pre-K, Kindergarten and other early learning readers in the media
center as well as within the early childhood classrooms at Carter Elementary School in Bibb
County, Georgia.
Having a Leap Frog Tag system reading bundle in our school would allow me to create a virtual
reading literacy center in the media center where classroom teachers can collaborate with the
media specialist to develop activities and lessons that will engage students in the reading
development process, especially focusing on the Pre-K through Kindergarten levels.
The students in our school enjoy every opportunity presented to interact with hands-on, learning
based technology. At our school, we do not have the latest and greatest computer resources for
our students. We do have to make the very best of older, slower computers. For me, I see
integrating other interactive technological resources into the learning environment as a
supplement to what our computer-based capabilities currently may lack.
2. Our students do not have the Leapfrog Tag system in our classrooms or media center, and I know
this would be an excellent opportunity to introduce them to these valuable reading reinforcement
tools.
Briefly describe your teaching idea.
In establishing a virtual literacy center, not only would students have access to computer
programs -- but the Leap Frog Tag system would serve as the centerpiece for developing
fundamental literacy skills in the Pre-K and Kindergarten arena where their minds are sponges,
soaking up new skills and expanding their vocabulary on a daily basis. Students would be able to
come into the center work individually and in groups. In developing fluency skills we could
record the students taking turns reading passages from a book. The students would use the Leap
Tag system to listen to the story being read. As a sentence is read the students would hear the
sentence being read by one of their classmates or themselves (played back from the recording) in
order to compare how accurately the students pronounced the words. Other activities would
include pairing students into small groups and having them hold index cards displaying sight
words. They would take turns using the Leap Tag to read passages aloud while others hold up
different index cards representing these sight words as they hear these. In addition, to group
teaching activities the students would also special times allotted as to then they could log in
individual time with the Leap Pads to enjoy self-paced reading.

What will your students learn or experience with your project?
Students would learn to work together to help each other become strong, independent readers.
What materials, resources or tools will you use in your project?
In conjunction with the above technology, I would sketch out a design of a unit to serve as our
virtual literacy nook in the media center that would provide adequate storage and easy access to
these resources. In order to bring these units plans into fruition, perhaps I would seek out a
group or organization who would assist me in building the center and also add a few cozy
touches to make it an inviting space. I would be to use the $100 grant money along with
donations or a fundraiser to accomplish this goal.
