3. 1945: Memex
“Consider a future device for individual use, which is a sort of mechanized private file
and library. It needs a name, and, to coin one at random, quot;memexquot; will do. A memex is a
device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and
which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility. It is
an enlarged intimate supplement to his memory.”
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/194507/bush
In 1945 Vannevar Bush published his seminal paper,
“As We May Think” , reflecting on how technologies
could help solve the problems of post war society.
He is now considered to be the inventor of
hypertext, and ever since his original work others
have been refining his approach, both in terms of
what hypertext should offer, how it is interpreted by
readers, and also in concrete systems and studies.

4. 1972: Dynabook
The prescience of Kay and Goldberg’s
vision was such that almost all the
specific ideas for the uses of notebook
computing developed in the group that
Kay directed at Xerox Palo Alto
Several years ago, we
Research Center (PARC) proved to be
crystallized our dreams into a
design idea for a personal
worthwhile. The broader idea—that the
dynamic medium the size of a
notebook computer would be a general-
notebook (the Dynabook)
which could be owned by
purpose device, with educators and
everyone and could have the
businesspeople and poets all using the
power to handle virtually all of
same type of Dynabook—has also held
its owner’s information-
related needs.

5. Dale Dougherty, O'Reilly Media VP, created the phrase 'Web 2.0'
during a brainstorming session during 2003. This then became
the name for the influential Web 2.0 Conference run by CMP
Media and O'Reilly Media. They then registered Web 2.0 as a
Service Mark quot;for arranging and conducting live events, namely
trade shows, expositions, business conferences and educational
conferences in various fields of computers and information
technology.quot; (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Reilly_Media)

6. Kritiikkiä
quot;Totally not. Web 1.0 was all about connecting people. It
was an interactive space, and I think Web 2.0 is of course
a piece of jargon, nobody even knows what it means. If
Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to
people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be
all along. And in fact, you know, this 'Web 2.0,' it means
using the standards which have been produced by all
these people working on Web 1.0.quot;
Tim Berners-Lee on Web 2.0: quot;nobody even knows what it meansquot; (http://
arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060901-7650.html)
Even boosters acknowledge that the biggest problems for Web 2.0 are excessive hype and the
lack of a real definition. But perhaps the biggest criticism of the Web 2.0 phenomenon is that it
has failed to generate enough truly important products. (2006; Arstechnica)

8. Mitä se on?
What is of particular importance in the web 2.0 context for
CSCL researchers is the integration of so-called social
software (Kolbitsch & Maurer, 2006*).
Social software refers to systems which facilitate human
communication, interaction, and collaboration. These systems
support the constitution and maintenance of self-organizing
social networks and communities.
Weblogs (blogs), file-sharing communities, and especially wikis
loom large in this social-software context.

“Meistä se toimii kutakuinkin näin: joku jakaa
mobiililaitteellaan kuvaamansa videon ystävän kanssa
vietetystä illasta.Ystävä ottaa videon ja lisää siihen
mp3-tiedoston, eli illan ääniraidan, ja jakaa
materiaalin toiselle ystävälleen. Tämä puolestaan lisää
mukaan valokuvia ja lähettää sen eteenpäin. Sisältö
kiertää kiertämistään ystävien välillä, jotka eivät
välttämättä asu lähellä toisiaan, ja tulee osaksi
ryhmän viihdettä”, johtaja Mark Selby Nokian

Devices
• A Mobile Internet Device (MID) is an Ultra-Mobile
PC (UMPC) initiative raised by Intel for consumers
and prosumers. Most other UMPCs are designed
for mobile professionals. (wikipedia)
• “Nokia alone will ship 400 million handsets this
year, and most of those devices can surf the web.
Geography, power consumption, and lack of wired
infrastructure mean that much of the planet will
see its first web page on a portable handset. Not
only will Internet handsets be everywhere, they’ll
be open” (http://gigaom.com/2007/11/01/nokia-

20. Fad(s) vs. Theory
“Overall, the general claim has been that when new
technologies and software have been used in an educational
setting, new learning opportunities have arisen.
Thus far there have been plenty of case studies and design
experiments where mobile technologies have been used for
innovative pedagogical ideas and design studies. However, only a
few studies give detailed arguments as to what are these new
opportunities in terms of learning interaction and collaboration
and what are the exact processes that mobile tools can scaffold.
We claim that it is not only the learner being “mobile” that
matters.“
(Järvelä, Näykki, Laru & Luokkanen, 2007)
21. ...theory
A stronger argument for applying mobile technologies and
social web tools for education is that of increasing students’
opportunities for interactions and sharing ideas and thus,
increasing opportunities for an active mind in multiple
contexts (Dillenbourg, Järvelä, & Fischer, 2007).
The pedagogical ideas of our research are grounded on
collaborative learning, including the socially shared origin of
cognition as well as self-regulated learning theory. This is to
say that special effort has been put on enhancing and
scaffolding collaborative learning as cognitive, social, and
motivated activity.

25. Our aim
• The aim of this study was to explore how
mobile technologies and social software
(weblogs, wikis, RSS-aggregators and file-sharing
services) can be used for scaffolding
collaborative learning; sharing understanding and
building virtual communities.
• The main assumption was that students’
interactions will be enriched when possibilities
of social software are integrated in the learning
situations, and thus, building virtual communities
will be more fluent than in more traditional
virtual learning environments.

38. Indiv. task: Kuvaaminen
• J: Kyllä ne oli. Kyllä se oli nämä justiin nämä
käsitteiden kuvaaminen. Se oli aina miettimisessä.
Että miten ihmeessä, miten tuosta. Miten
metakognitio.
semmonen, ihan aluksi tuntui semmoselta. Että mitä tänne
nyt voi kirjoittaa.. Että uskaltaako tänne kirjoittaa ihan mitä
vaan.
41. Indiv. task: Seuraaminen
• Nämä just, Google Readerin kautta ne, siellä vaikka
vinkkejä just että ihan kuvausvinkkejäkin, katto
heitettiin sinne tavallaan sinne käytäntöön, elikkä me itte
kotona.
mulla on niinku silleen päätäntävaltaa siihen, tämmösen
kolahtanu.
45. Pedagoginen design
• “Punainen lanka” keksittiin lennosta. Opiskelijoille on
syytä kehittää järkevä ja heille itselleen mielekäs
yhteinen päämäärä tehtäväksi joka arvioidaan
kurssisuorituksena. Nyt osittain lopputuote jäi
epämääräiseksi kun sitä ei nähty tärkeänä tavoitteena
(vrt. Wikin idea)
• Kokonaisuutena design toimi _hienosti_
• Tekninen käyttöönotto helpottuu jos opiskelijat
ottavat sovelluksia käyttöön harjoitellessaan niiden
käyttöä (Collab periaate, ei kaikkea valmiina)

47. Tekninen design
(toteutus)
• Päätelaitteet: konfigurointi oli todella työlästä
(5 henkeä & 2 päivää, sis. Shozu, gReader ja
pikavalinnat)
• Palvelut: erittäin työläs salasananhallinta(omat
salasanat suurimpaan osaan palveluista) ja
palvelut omia saarekkeitansa. RSS-syötteiden
laittaminen blogeihin työlästä
• Ohjeistus: piti laatia itse
48. RSS-syötteet (gReader)
• sit yks ihan konkreettinen haaste, mikä liitty tohon

oppimiskokemukset on ollu ihmisillä niinku ihan yksinään,
vaikka siinä sitten siinä keskustelussakin on tullu paljo
ajatuksia, mut jotenkin niitä ajatuksia on sitten yksinään
pyöritelly mielessään ja (epäselvää) kirjottanu. Mut, en kyllä
ossaa sanoa et mikä ois ollu ryhmän yhteinen saavutus.
56. First scientific results
• The Edufeed study indicates that web 2.0
technologies can be designed to scaffold shared
regulation processes within the groups.
• In the study the students constructed a variety of
pictorial knowledge representations and shared their
meaning collaboratively.
• However, the students thought that it was challenging
to represent their own ideas with pictures and even
more challenging to explain the representation to
others. Nevertheless, the students who explained
their pictures to others viewed that the elaboration
of pictures was beneficial for their learning.
