Resource Center’s portal
• Databases can be found under the Research Tools tab

various formats, from full-text journal
articles, periodicals, books and more.
• Because ASC is a multidisciplinary
database, it’s a great place to start
your research of controversial topics.
11. SEARCH TIPS
Helpful tips to remember while searching:
Avoid typing questions or long phrases in the search boxes.
Click the Boolean Search radio button if you need to search a specific
phrase.
Results can be limited by date, full-text, and Scholarly Journal articles, if
needed.
Keep specific search terms separated and enter them in their own boxes
under the Advanced Search.
While searching, make note of other subject terms that are used to describe
what you’re looking for.

14. DATABASE SEARCH REVIEW
Basic searches: uses more generic search terms
to target areas you would like to research
further about your topic. Gather synonyms and
vocabulary that relates to your topic during a
basic search.
Advanced searches: uses a more focused search
to refine and narrow your topic. Various
combinations of topic terms may be used to
yield different search results.
For those of you that have not yet decided upon your focused topic, consider using the CQ Researcher Online website. Their “Hot Topics” section has many topic ideas that you may be interested in researching.
It is important for studentsto know where databases can be found on the LRC’s portal. At this point, students would already have had an introduction to the LRC’s website.
I chose ASC because it is multidisciplinary and can be accessed through Harrison College’s library webpage.
This screenshot shows you the basic search page for ASC. When beginning research, a basic search can help you to narrow and refine your topic.
-The controversial topic we’ve decided on is Childhood Obesity-Note Generic search terms and the suggested terms that appear-Also note the full text and scholarly journal options that appear on the left side.-After clicking “search,” note the large number of results that were found and the different ways the results can be refined to produce more or less results.-Be sure not to just look at the first few entries that appear, but all pages relevant to your search. You may find an article that interests you on another page besides the first.
An advanced search begins here and you notice that there are more boxes to type in. After doing a basic search and discovering the major concepts, keywords, or synonyms pertinent to your focused topic, you can begin your more narrowed search here.
-After performingour basic search, our topic now will be focused on Causes of Childhood Obesity in the United States.-Be sure to separate the different search terms into different boxes and note the ways that your search can be refined, as before.-As you can see, there are much fewer, more focused results, which also can be further refined.-Now that you’ve used the advanced search to find your specific search terms, be sure to scroll down the page and navigate to other pages to see all of your options.
-Make note of the source type you have selected. Some teachers are very specific about the resources they want used for projects.-The subject terms will provide you with other key concepts, keywords, or synonyms that may be helpful in your research, so don’t disregard them! Clicking on them will take you to a new search with those terms.-The abstract is a synopsis of the article you’ve chosen and can give insight as to whether the article is beneficial for your research.-Finally, the “Cite” tool on the right is what you will use to cite the works you’ve chosen to use. You will be using this to complete your assessment at the end of the lesson.
