3. Camera Work
1. The first shot is a medium shot which is shown throughout the beginning
this establishes where the character is and tells the audience what he is
doing; which is searching for something.
2. The second shot is of the police officer/detective who is after Devlin and Ed
Sheeran. The shot is close up this is to show his emotions, which is anger
towards finding these boys that's why he is shouting and questioning the
female. This conforms to rap conventions, because if the song is an angry
song the emotions will go with that, which includes shouting and lashing
out.
3. The third shot is a close up of blood on Ed’s t-shirt which looks like he has
been stabbed. This means there is violence involved which converts to a
convention of Rap.
In this music video the most common shots are close ups, extreme close ups and
medium shots. These are all conventions of Rap & Hip-hop. They are all used
to focus on main parts of the video to help the audience understand.
5. Editing.
In this music video the editing techniques are used in different ways;
1. The first editing techniques used and first thing you see in this music video is very
commonly used in rap & Hip-hop music videos, this is the use of text which reveals
the artist or name of song. In this case they have choose to use both, but the names
fading while the song title appears.
2. The second techniques used and noticed was the use of focusing and un focusing,
there isn't a lot but the most obvious was when Ed is sitting in a car and looks in
the mirror to see a police van. And it unfocused when he has realised who and what
it is; this is clever because the editor has choose to let the audience know who it is
when Ed has realised.
3. The third editing technique is used throughout the entire video which is the cuts
between the three different people. Devlin inside the house, Ed in the get away car
and the Female in the police car with a man. This is to show the different stories
going on. Devlin inside saying goodbye to his family, Ed in the car who is getting
ready to go but has been stabbed and the Female being questioning by the police
officer about the boys.
All these editing techniques have been used in other music videos which means they
have conformed to the conventions of the genres.
7. Mise-En-Scene
The mise-en-scene is very important in a music video because it counts for Props,
Location, Costume and location, lighting and body language. The three shots show the
lighting is all natural because it is to give a realistic effect because of the story line.
1. The first picture is of a mask this is the main prop in this video because it was
explains to the audience what is going on. At the start of the scene the police officer
is asking the female if he has seen the mask shown in a photo he has; the photo is of
two men on A security camera with that mask on and then it cuts away to Ed in
the car and the mask sitting on the seat besides him. This shows the audience he
was in that photo.
2. The second photo shows one of the locations which is used, This one is the get
away car that Ed is waiting for Devlin in. The other locations are the police
officers car and inside the house. Again this is to show the three different stories
going on. Using different locations conforms to the conventions.
3. The third shot is to show the clothing used in this music video. The costumes
conforms to rap music videos because they usually working class. This video just
has baggy comfortable clothes. Even thought this conforms to Rap conventions it
doesn't to hip-hop. Hip-Hop normally have expensive clothes with recognisable
brands.
