A volcano is:

a mountain made by magma and lava forced up
through the Earth’s crust.
Five types of volcanoes
The types of volcanoes depend on two main factors:

                    Viscosity
                          +
                       Gas
The higher the viscosity and the higher the gas content the more powerful the
volcano.
The five type of volcanoes are:
1. Stratovolcano
2. Cinder Cone
3. Shield
4. Dome
5. Caldera
Stratovolcano
High viscosity (think magma)
High gas content
Steep hills; high mountains
The most powerful volcanoes!!!

Examples:
                                      Vesuvius
                                      Naples, Italy
Vesuzius in Italy
Mt. Saint Helen’s in US

                                 Mt. Saint Helens
                                 Montana, USA
Cinder Cone
Medium viscosity
High gas content
Most have a bowl shaped crater at the top

Example: Paricutin
Stromboli in Italy Mexico

Paricutin in Mexico

                                            Stromboli, Italy
Shield
Low viscosity
Low gas content
Usually low and can be hundreds of
  miles wide

Example:
Maunu Lau in Hawaii
Dome
High viscosity
Low gas content
Often found in the crater of Stratovolcanoes

Example:
Dome on Mt. Saint Helens
Caldera
Formed by the collapse of land after
  a volcano erupts
Shaped like a cooking pot or caldron

Example:
La Cumbre in the Galapagos Islands
I like volcanoes because they explode fiery red
                    lava!!!!!
