How to Cross the Wireless Data Chasm: Internet World Wireless East, February 2001
In this presentation from Internet World Wireless East in February, 2001, Laurie Lamberth (formerly Hoyt) discusses how the nascent mobile data industry would cross the early-adopter chasm. She asserts that mobile data would reach the mainstream market by initially focusing on enterprise wireless solutions that delight early adopters and drive revenue streams that can be used to prepare these services for the mainstream market. The presentation includes great graphics comparing technology chasm-crossing to a canyon jump by the late motorcycle daredevil, Evel Kinevel. The sound effects and animations have been removed, but they were hilarious in the presentation's original formatting. Laurie remembers this presentation well: "While my message was generally well received by the audience, there was one guy who challenged me repeatedly during the Q&A session about the value of mobile data to carriers. This blowhard kept insisting that the carriers would "never really get behind mobile data" because "it will be years -- maybe a decade -- before wireless data exceeds 20% of operator revenues." Of course, he was wrong: in May 2012, GigaOm reported that mobile data made up 85% of U.S. mobile operator network traffic and 39% of their revenues. Laurie says she remembers who the poor, misguided fellow is and bumps into him from time to time at mobile conferences. But she doesn't point and laugh, though she says sometimes she thinks she should.
