Presented at BJUG, 5/8/2012 by Ivan Portilla IBM Watson is a reasoning system with a question and answer front end that processes natural language coming from both structured and unstructured data. Watson additionally incorporates analytics from which the system learns to derive answer confidence and scoring. We will discuss the Watson System and some of its key foundations that came from the Open Source Apache Software Foundation. We will share the lessons learned of using Open source technologies including UIMA, Derby, Hadoop and Tomcat in Watson. We will explain how the primary (shallow) search was built with Apache Lucene and how the team followed Agile best practices for its Software development efforts.

HCI have long moved beyond the evaluation setting of a single user sitting in front of a single desktop computer, yet many of our fundamentally held viewpoints about evaluation continues to be ruled by outdated biases derived from this legacy. We need to engage with real users in 'Living Laboratories', in which researchers either adopt or create functioning systems that are used in real settings. These new experimental platforms will greatly enable researchers to conduct evaluations that span many users, places, time, location, and social factors in ways that are unimaginable before.

Reality and Potential: Expanding the Circle of Scholars of Learning

Accelerating technological change is driving dramatic transformations in society and in the workplace that demand greater imagination, creativity and innovation. What does this mean for education and human capital development? How do we fit in as organizations and individuals? More importantly, what do we need to do now? This talk focuses on the emerging qualities of innovation workers in the 21st century, the impact of social technologies and media (crowdsourcing, etc.), and “what’s next” as we build Society 3.0. This talk explores a framework for navigating our rapidly changing society, and plots a pathway for maximizing and leading with our creativity and innovation capital. (These slides were shared at Creative Company Conference, ITSMF Academy and the University of Oxford.)

Presentation of Meandre: Semantic-Driven Data-Intensive Flows in the Clouds at eScience 2008 by Bernie Acs Data-intensive flow computing allows efficient processing of large volumes of data otherwise unapproachable. This paper introduces a new semantic-driven data-intensive flow infrastructure which: (1) provides a robust and transparent scalable solution from a laptop to large-scale clusters, (2) creates an unified solution for batch and interactive tasks in high-performance computing environments, and (3) encourages reusing and sharing components. Banking on virtualization and cloud computing techniques, the Meandre infrastructure is able to create and dispose Meandre clusters on demand, being transparent to the final user. This paper also presents a prototype of such clustered infrastructure and some results obtained using it.
