Morrow High Media Center
                Location
The media
center is
located
across from
the
courtyard.
The
courtyard is
the area
where
students go
to eat and
relax during
lunch.
Media Center Location

This display
case is
located
outside of
the media
center.
Every month
there is
different
information
inside the
display case
pertaining to
the school’s
curriculum.
Morrow High Media Center
                          Location
 The media
    center is
    located on
    the second
    floor near
    many of the
    science
    classes.
    Unfortunate
    ly, it is a
    great
    distance
    from many
    of the CTAE
    (Career,
    Technical,
    and
    Agriculture
    Education)
    classes.
Circulation Desk

Upon
entering the
media
center, the
circulation
desk is
located on
the left hand
side.
Reading Area

This is the
reading area.
The reading
area is on the
immediate left
upon entering
the media
center. This area
is not utilized
often due to the
lack of seating
space. The
downsize is that
this area is right
next to the
hallway which
can be a little
noisy at times.
Computer Area

The media
center
currently has
fifteen
computers
for students
to utilize.
Some
classrooms
have at least
one
computer for
students to
utilize during
class.
Computer Area

Unfortunately,
some of them are
non operable at
times. Additional
computers are
located in the
computer lab on
the second floor.
The computer lab
has 30 computers
for students to
utilize. The
downfall to this is
many teachers
utilize the
computer lab for
the entire school
day to house
students because
they are too lazy
too teach!
Seating/Work Area

There are 20
tables with
4-6 chairs at
each. The
media center
can seat up
to
approximatel
y 150-170
students.
Seating/Work Area

Our media
specialist
just
completed
the weeding
process for
this school
year. Notice
the boxes
and empty
shelves.

Empty shelf space

Too many

What do we
do with all of
this useful

Media Center Policy
Accessibility of the media center
 The Library Media Center (LMC) should always be open and
accessible. The Georgia Department of Education policy 160-4-
4-.01 clearly states that the LMC is flexibly scheduled throughout
    each instructional day.
 Morrow High School Media Center Hours of Operation: 7:30AM-
    3:15PM
 I would extend the hours to 5:00PM for those students who are
able to work late on assignments in the media center.
 The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) policy
concerning Flexible Scheduling is taken very seriously and
assigning classes to the Media Center is a violation of GaDOE
policy. Every Library Media Specialist (LMS) is also required to
have an active school level Library Media/Technology
    Committee.
 Light Blue- Changes that I would make to the current policy.
Media Center Policy
 Collaboration and flexible scheduling are needed for a quality and effective K-
12 media center instructional program. One cannot exist without the other. The
library media program shall be a collaborative effort between the classroom
teacher and the library media specialist in order to help our students achieve.
 Collaboration between the media specialist and classroom teacher is not
    required at Morrow High School.
 Collaboration between both the media specialist and teacher should be
    required.
 It is essential that flexible scheduling work in partnership with collaboration.
Administrators, classroom teachers, and media specialists should realize that
flexible scheduling is much more difficult and time consuming than a fixed
schedule. Flexible scheduling is not having a sign up sheet available and
allowing teachers to sign up for the media center. The necessary planning for
successful instruction with the classroom teacher and co-teaching the students
    are time consuming.
 Again, the Library Media Center should always be open and accessible. This is
a GaDOE policy and if classes are assigned to the media center it is not
possible to be open to all students, staff, and faculty.
 Fixed scheduling is required at Morrow High School.
 I would recommend that flexible scheduling is required for the reasons
    mentioned above.
Media Center Policy
 Evaluation of Collection/Funding
 Every school is required to have one full time media
specialist as well as one full time media clerk.
 Morrow High has one full time media specialist and one
    full time media clerk.
 Each school should have at least 2 media specialists or
clerks to assist with the workload required by media
    specialists.
 The media center’s collection is reviewed annually.
Resources that are not utilized are eliminated. Weeding
    also takes place annually.
 The collection must align with the GPS standards as
well as the curriculum that is being taught in classrooms.
Media Center Policy
 Evaluation of Collection/Funding continued
 Due to budget cuts received this school term,
the superintendent only awarded $5,000 to
each media center in Clayton County Public
    Schools.
 Evidently, this is not enough funds to replace
    resources in the media center.
 The annual budget received by each media
center in the Clayton County School system
should be a minimal of $10,000.
Media Center Policy
 Internet Use
 Each student is required to have a completed
Internet Agreement Form on file before they
are allowed to access the computers in the
    media center.
Media Center Policy
 Circulation Policies
 9th-12th grade- Students are allowed to check
out as many books as they like with the
exception of reference material such as
    encyclopedias and dictionaries. They are
required to utilize reference material in the
    media center.
Media Center Policy
 Literacy Checklist Requirements. Before students
graduate from Morrow High School, they are
required to know how to complete each task on
    the checklist listed below:
- Log on to Internet to locate sources of information.
- Evaluate web sites for accuracy of information
    (reliability, credibility, accuracy).
- Use GALILEO as a source of information for research
    projects and personal information.
- Know how to create citations
- Understand the ethics of using resources including
copyright restrictions and the concept of plagiarism.
Media Center Policy
 Checklist continued
- Use OPACS to locate resources in a library media

  center.
- Understand and use the Dewey classification system.

- Use specialized reference works and databases.

The checklist is listed as a requirement for students
before graduation but, our students do not know how
to do many of the tasks on this checklist. I would
recommend that the media specialist with the
collaboration of the teacher ensure that the tasks
mentioned in the Library Checklist are accomplished
  by each student before graduation.

  • 6. Morrow High Media Center Location The media center is located across from the courtyard. The courtyard is the area where students go to eat and relax during lunch.
  • 7. Media Center Location This display case is located outside of the media center. Every month there is different information inside the display case pertaining to the school’s curriculum.
  • 8. Morrow High Media Center Location  The media center is located on the second floor near many of the science classes. Unfortunate ly, it is a great distance from many of the CTAE (Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education) classes.
  • 9. Circulation Desk Upon entering the media center, the circulation desk is located on the left hand side.
  • 10. Reading Area This is the reading area. The reading area is on the immediate left upon entering the media center. This area is not utilized often due to the lack of seating space. The downsize is that this area is right next to the hallway which can be a little noisy at times.
  • 11. Computer Area The media center currently has fifteen computers for students to utilize. Some classrooms have at least one computer for students to utilize during class.
  • 12. Computer Area Unfortunately, some of them are non operable at times. Additional computers are located in the computer lab on the second floor. The computer lab has 30 computers for students to utilize. The downfall to this is many teachers utilize the computer lab for the entire school day to house students because they are too lazy too teach!
  • 13. Seating/Work Area There are 20 tables with 4-6 chairs at each. The media center can seat up to approximatel y 150-170 students.
  • 14. Seating/Work Area Our media specialist just completed the weeding process for this school year. Notice the boxes and empty shelves.
  • 17. Empty shelf space Too many empty shelves. What do we do with all of this useful space?

  • 31. Media Center Policy Accessibility of the media center  The Library Media Center (LMC) should always be open and accessible. The Georgia Department of Education policy 160-4- 4-.01 clearly states that the LMC is flexibly scheduled throughout each instructional day.  Morrow High School Media Center Hours of Operation: 7:30AM- 3:15PM  I would extend the hours to 5:00PM for those students who are able to work late on assignments in the media center.  The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) policy concerning Flexible Scheduling is taken very seriously and assigning classes to the Media Center is a violation of GaDOE policy. Every Library Media Specialist (LMS) is also required to have an active school level Library Media/Technology Committee.  Light Blue- Changes that I would make to the current policy.
  • 32. Media Center Policy  Collaboration and flexible scheduling are needed for a quality and effective K- 12 media center instructional program. One cannot exist without the other. The library media program shall be a collaborative effort between the classroom teacher and the library media specialist in order to help our students achieve.  Collaboration between the media specialist and classroom teacher is not required at Morrow High School.  Collaboration between both the media specialist and teacher should be required.  It is essential that flexible scheduling work in partnership with collaboration. Administrators, classroom teachers, and media specialists should realize that flexible scheduling is much more difficult and time consuming than a fixed schedule. Flexible scheduling is not having a sign up sheet available and allowing teachers to sign up for the media center. The necessary planning for successful instruction with the classroom teacher and co-teaching the students are time consuming.  Again, the Library Media Center should always be open and accessible. This is a GaDOE policy and if classes are assigned to the media center it is not possible to be open to all students, staff, and faculty.  Fixed scheduling is required at Morrow High School.  I would recommend that flexible scheduling is required for the reasons mentioned above.
  • 33. Media Center Policy  Evaluation of Collection/Funding  Every school is required to have one full time media specialist as well as one full time media clerk.  Morrow High has one full time media specialist and one full time media clerk.  Each school should have at least 2 media specialists or clerks to assist with the workload required by media specialists.  The media center’s collection is reviewed annually. Resources that are not utilized are eliminated. Weeding also takes place annually.  The collection must align with the GPS standards as well as the curriculum that is being taught in classrooms.
  • 34. Media Center Policy  Evaluation of Collection/Funding continued  Due to budget cuts received this school term, the superintendent only awarded $5,000 to each media center in Clayton County Public Schools.  Evidently, this is not enough funds to replace resources in the media center.  The annual budget received by each media center in the Clayton County School system should be a minimal of $10,000.
  • 35. Media Center Policy  Internet Use  Each student is required to have a completed Internet Agreement Form on file before they are allowed to access the computers in the media center.
  • 36. Media Center Policy  Circulation Policies  9th-12th grade- Students are allowed to check out as many books as they like with the exception of reference material such as encyclopedias and dictionaries. They are required to utilize reference material in the media center.
  • 37. Media Center Policy  Literacy Checklist Requirements. Before students graduate from Morrow High School, they are required to know how to complete each task on the checklist listed below: - Log on to Internet to locate sources of information. - Evaluate web sites for accuracy of information (reliability, credibility, accuracy). - Use GALILEO as a source of information for research projects and personal information. - Know how to create citations - Understand the ethics of using resources including copyright restrictions and the concept of plagiarism.
  • 38. Media Center Policy  Checklist continued - Use OPACS to locate resources in a library media center. - Understand and use the Dewey classification system. - Use specialized reference works and databases. The checklist is listed as a requirement for students before graduation but, our students do not know how to do many of the tasks on this checklist. I would recommend that the media specialist with the collaboration of the teacher ensure that the tasks mentioned in the Library Checklist are accomplished by each student before graduation.
