1. Lesson Title: Home For Sale!
Class KS2 Topic Salmon Habitat Time Allocation 40 mins
Learning Intentions
Identify and describe the key elements
required for a salmon’s ideal habitat.
Work in groups to produce a newspaper
advertisement for their perfect salmon
habitat.
Success Criteria
Pupils should use their knowledge of the
key habitat factors and imaginations to
create an informative advertisement.
Pupils should work collaboratively in
groups, taking on and sharing roles.
Key Vocabulary
Habitat- clean water, water flow,
water temperature, food,
protection, stream, river bank,
vegetation, pollution, logging etc.
Introduction
Invite the pupils to discuss what a habitat is. Provide them with a definition- Oxford
Dictionary- the natural home or environment of an animal, plant or other organism.
Ask the pupils to think of and describe the main features of their own habitat. Pupils
should make a list of what they like best in their home, e.g.- warmth, food, bed etc.
Now introduce PowerPoint-‘Habitat’ which will explain the 5 main features that salmon
like to have in their habitat.
Resources
PowerPoint- ‘Habitat’
Differentiated advertisement
templates.
Markers/crayons/pencils etc.
ICT- internet access & Word.
Development (Activity)
Explain to the pupils that they will become salmon who are thinking of migrating soon and
therefore need to sell their home. In order to do this they must create an advertisement
stating the main features of their home for potential buyers. Discuss what an
advertisement it and what its purposes are.
Using their knowledge from the PowerPoint the pupils will be asked to firstly complete a
mind mapping exercise in groups. This mind map should compile the main 5 elements as
stated in the PowerPoint plus their own inventive ideas of how to sell their home and how
to make it more attractive to potential buyers.
Once completed the children will then use the advertisement template and work in
groups to complete it, using their own ideas and creative images to enhance its appeal.
Encourage the pupils to be inventive, creative and work as a team, sharing roles equally.
Key Questions
What is a habitat?
What are the main features of our own
homes?
What are the 5 key features of the
salmon’s habitat?
Can you see any similarities between a
salmon’s habitat and our own?
What is an advertisement?
What is the purpose of an advertisement
Where do we see advertisements?
What facts should it include?
What persuasive language/images could
you use to make it more appealing?
2. Plenary
Each group should be allocated time to showcase and explain their advertisement to the
rest of the class. This can be done in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ manner where each pupil in the
group should be encouraged to contribute to the discussion, become a salesperson and
also detail the role they played within their group.
Each pupil will therefore act as an audience member and a speaker and will be asked to
give constructive feedback to each group (discussing aspects which they liked and others
which they believe could be improved).
Differentiation
Template 1 * includes a word bank of
vocabulary and fewer lines, requiring
less information.
Template 2 has blank lines only which
require more information.
Extension
This lesson could be enhanced by incorporating the use of ICT into the development
section. The pupils could therefore use ICT packages, such as Word, Publisher or other
programmes, to create their advertisement, using images from the internet and other
fonts, colours and details to enhance their advertisement.
