SENSATION
SENSATION
• Sensation is the indefinite generalized body
feeling
• The faculty to feel or perceive physical
sensibility
• A perception associated with stimulation of a
sense organ or with a specific body condition
• “Sensation are elementary impression about
the external world gathered by sense organs. It
is merely awareness of the bare quality of
experience and arises directly from the
stimulation of a sense organs.”
NATURE OF SENSATION
• Sensation is the simplest form of cognition
• Sensation is the elementary raw material of
our knowledge
• Sensation is the simplest form of mental
activity
• It is orginated from the sense organs
• A sensation is an inner experience aroused by
the respective stimulus through sense organs
• The bare awareness of a sensory quality like
sound, colour, odour or taste is a sensation.
TYPES OF SENSATION
SENSATION
Organic
sensation
Motor
/kinaesthetic
sensation
Special
sensation
It is produced by
internal organs.
Eg. Hunger, thirst
These are
produced by
changes in the
organs of
movement viz ,
muscles, tendons,
and joints
These are produced
by special kinds of
stimuli like light
waves, air waves and
so on. Colour ,
sounds, taste, smell,
pressure, heat, cold
etc are special
sensation
ATTRIBUTES OF SENSATION
Attributes
of
sensation
Quality
Intensity
Extensity
Duration
Localisation
1.Quality:-These are produced by different kind
of stimuli and they have different sense
organs.
Eg: Sensation of sound are produced by air on
the ear
2. Intensity:-all sensation differ in intensity and
vary from weak to very intensive nature
Eg: a white a faint sound produces a faint
sensation of light
3.Extensity :- It is depends upon the area of the
sensitive surface stimulated by a stimulas .
Eg: Touch a book with a finger tip and then with
your palm the first tactual sensation has greater
extensity than the second one .
4.Duration:- * every sensation has a sensible
duration
* a sensation may linger in the mind for a
shorter or longer duration
* a sensation may last longer than its stimulus
causing after sensation .* It is specially noticable
in case of vision
5. Localisation :-It is distinguishes a sensation of
one part of a sense organ form an identical
sensation of another part
LAWS OF SENSATION
SIMILARITY PROXIMITY CLOSURE CONTINUITY
This law states
that elements of
a stimulus
configuration will
be grouped
together
perceptually if
they are similar
to each other
This law states
that elements
nearer to each
other are
perceived as
part of the same
configuration
The law states
that we tend to
close the open
edges of a figure
to make the
stimulus
configuration
complete.
The law states that
we link individual
elements of a
configuration so
that they form
continuous pattern
that makes sense
to us.
FACTORS OF SENSATION
*GOOD HEALTH
*PEACE AND QUIET
* LOVE
*JOY
*DREAMS
*PRESSURE
*TEMPARATURE
*SMELL
SENSATION OF EYE
SENSATION OF EAR
SENSATION OF NOSE
SENSATION OF SKIN
