 A natural instinctive state of mind deriving
    from one's circumstances, mood, or
    relationships with others.

 Any of the particular feelings that
characterize such a state of mind, such as
joy, anger, love, hate, horror, etc.

 Synonyms
    ◦ feeling - sensation - sentiment - agitation
 Rooted from the concept of social intelligence
    – the ability to understand and relate to
    people.
 Ability to understand and manage men and
women, boys and girls – to act wisely in
    human relations (Thorndike)
 Involves the ability to monitor one’s own and
    others’ emotions, to discriminate among
them, and to use the information to guide
    one’s thinking and actions.
 Self-awareness – observing oneself

 Managing emotions – handling feelings

 Motivating oneself – channeling emotions

 Empathy – sensitivity to others

 Handling relationships – managing emotions
    in others
 Intelligence according to Tenedero is the
ability to learn and apply what is learned.
 EI is the ability to understand and to
effectively apply the power of emotions as a
source of personal energy and interpersonal
    synergy.
 EQ has two essential aspects.
      Personal
      Interpersonal
 Ability to read one’s own emotions
    ◦ -- I am excited!

 Understand the power of these emotions.
    ◦ -- I am excited because….

.. This ability leads to self-awareness and inner
      guidance.
 Enables one to handle emotions.

 This ability leads to personal authenticity and
    resilience.
    ◦ -- I am excited, but I will not do anything in haste.
 Enables one to harness the personal
emotional power for a meaningful purpose.

 One’s own character is built.

 Personal potentials are gradually brought to
    actualization.

    ◦ -- I will use my excitement, or my anger, or my
being in love to do something positive.
 Using our own emotions as a point of
    reference.

 Enables us to reach out to other people,
    influence positively, and build
    transformational relationships with them.
 Ability to recognize a feeling as it happens.

 Building block of the next fundamental of
emotional intelligence: being able to shake
    off a bad mood.

    ◦ - People with greater certainty about their emotions
are better pilots of their lives.
 Bad as well as good moods spice life and
build character. The key is balance.

 “reframing” – consciously reinterpreting a
situation in a more positive light.

 “cooling down” – example, going for a drive
    to help you think clearly

 “exercise” – like taking a long walk to distract
    yourself.
 Requires clear goals and an optimistic, can-
    do attitude.

EXAMPLE: How 2 diff person deal with rejection
 A (pessimist) – “I’m a failure! I’ll never make a
    sale.”
 B (optimist) – “I’m using the wrong approach,
I should do it better next time.”
 The essence of emotional self-regulation is
the ability to delay impulse in the service of a
    goal.

 The ability to resist impulse can be developed
    through practice.
 The capacity to know how another person
feels is important on the job, in romance and
    friendship, especially in the family.

 “THANK YOU” – can leave us feeling
    dismissed, patronized or genuinely
    appreciated.
