- L'aprenenetage online es pot dur a terme mitjançant cada cop més dispositius: ordinador, mòbil, llibres electrònics, TV interactiva. Hi ha moltes eines que poden ser utilitzades en diverses plataformes.

- La universitat online permet relacionar estudiants, professors i experts intra i inter organitzacions, tenint la possibilitat de relacionar membres d'una mateixa comunitat i relacionar esta comunitat amb membres d'altres comunitats.
- Com a xarxa d'universitat la IALU permet combinar una metodologia presencial/online a mida de les necessitats. Això permet crear: programes purament online (Open University per exemple). PRogrames semipresencials on la primera part del curs (x crèdits) són un programa online (donat per la Open University per exemple) complementats presencialment per qualsevol altra universitat que fixa el temari del seu stage i dona a l'alumne un títol propi de la seua univesitat (per exemple Mèxic) programes on hi ha un temps d'aprenentatge online i un temps d'aprenentatge presencial alternant-se els dos formats programes on solpadament en el temps es duen a terme estratègies d'aprenentatge presencials i online.
