Right or Wrong
Since 1969 there has been group’s of people that argues if gay marriage should
be legalized and have the same benefits that heterosexual couples have, but this has
been a long fight; because along the years, it has been like a rollercoaster for gay
people that fight for their rights. Many times the government stated that it was racist to
prohibit this marriage and it was against the constitution; therefore more than nine
states in the United States legalized their marriage, and at the same time thirty-eight
states prohibit the gay marriage thought law or constitution.
The states that are against this type of marriage argue that, traditional values are
been destroyed by new ways of thinking and those may even bring bigger problems to
our society and future generations. Also in 2010 the LDS church and the Pope Benedict
XVI went against gay marriage explaining that a marriage is between a man and a
woman and that its stated in the Bible.
After this intervention of the church in 2010 the CNN showed the results of the
national poll and 52% agreed that gays and lesbians should have a constitutional right;
however in 2012 that national support when from 52% to 50% and also the president
Obama supported the gay marriage between couples.

There are different points of view out there, many of them are in favor and others
are against legalizing gay marriage. One of the authors that I used the most was Darryl
Bush and the reason why is because instead of putting his point of view on his article,
he explains the pros and cons of this topic and leaves an open question to the readers
so they make their own choice.
Brush tells us the story about gay marriage and how the banned of it, could be
an unconstitutional discrimination, and the same time the opposite fights using the
traditional family and marriage as a weapon against this topic.
Darryl Bush also tells us how the gay right movements goes back to the
Stonewall Riots which is a fight between gays and lesbians against the police, and how
this complot created several political movements in different states. Also several
singers, celebrities and churches created publicity against gay people, by the increase
of AIDS around the world and the statements of strong leaders from the Catholic
Church saying that: “Cannot approve of legal initiatives that imply a re-evaluation of the
life of the couple and the family”. It is clear that the author is giving information, instead
of taking a side in gay marriage. Bush is showing both sides of the topic and letting
people choose according to his information.
The other point of view is the famous writer Emily Stinespring, she is a social
worker and is been a teacher in Pittsylvania county for the last 12 years. Stinespring is
pro legalizing gay marriage, and she wants people to understand that America is a free
country and that everyone should be able to be free in their own decisions. She
expresses this way of thinking by using the constitution and the rights of people, also by
3. Garcia 3
explaining how America is a free country and that is sad to see that people can’t
express their feelings, and this is her way of persuade people.
The author talks how the homosexuals are discriminated and one of the biggest
ways is marriage. Because homosexuals should have the same treatments that
everyone gets, including expending the rest of our life’s with the person they love.
Author thinks that America is the country of the freedom and the opportunity and she
does not understand why homosexuals aren’t allowed to express their love.
Another author Joe Messerli graduated from the University of Wisconsin, in this
article gives certain points, that why homosexuals shouldn’t get married. The first one is
the religion around the world, because churches consider homosexuality unacceptable.
Also people think that we already have a lot of divorces, and bringing homosexual
marriage will increase this percentage, the family values or the traditional man, woman,
children would be destroyed; because it could harm the idea of a real marriage and that
will hurt the society; as well as the gender roles for kids, this may confuse with their own
traditional families.
This article is completely against gay marriage and shows the different points of
view where you can see how harmful approving this gay marriage could be for society,
and our future generations. His facts are values, the way of thinking of a traditional
family, and religion, which for many people those are the most important facts.
This article is coming from the author Billy Hallowell he has been working in
Journalism for more than a decade. He has a B.A. in journalism from the University of
Saint Vincent in NY. His article is a little different and the reason why is because he
4. Garcia 4
takes an article from a gay conservative activist against gay marriage and takes over
from there.
Hallowell uses the article of a gay conservative activist, to prove and explain the
reason why he is against gay marriage. As they explain their concern about kids and the
reaction of the kids when society change the normal values of a family to a completely
freedom for everyone. This could cause a disorder in their feelings and in their heads.
Hallowell focuses on an article wrote by a conservative activist who is gay, but
this author is against gay marriage and his name is Doug Mainwaring. Mainwaring talks
about the impact the gay marriage could have on children, and also what he thinks of
gay people that want to have kids. Doug Mainwaring says that this people are putting
their “right” before the kid’s rights and the reason why, it’s because his opinion is that a
child without a mother and a father is not a small issue.
After this research I understood more the story of the gay marriage and how long
they been fighting about this issues; also that their lives are like a rollercoaster just
because sometimes a states approves the marriage and 2 months later they change
their mind, and even though they aren’t a traditional couple their lives, goes around their
relationship and their stability in life.
In the other hand I definitely understand why people go against gay marriage, if
their dream family is a traditional family with traditional values, and they don’t want their
kids to be confused or handle those types of situations, that are extremely complicated
in today’s society.
