Reading Enrichment

What is Get Caught Reading? A nationwide campaign to remind people of all
ages how much fun it is to read. Launched in 1999 and supported by the
Association of American Publishers, GCR encourages you to order our free
posters, read our newsletters, download our free videos, and join the thousands
of celebrities, booksellers, teachers and librarians who continue to embrace this
campaign across the country.
In our School: We will set aside 30 minutes in the day for students to read.
Students will also be encouraged to visit the media center for leisure reading time
when they have completed class work. Media specialists and teachers will take
pictures of students “caught reading”. Each week a student will be chosen from
the pictures to be the model child of the effort and receive a free ice cream at
lunch.
Posters like these will be placed around the school that students will identify with.
A problem that we have seen is that students view reading as “uncool” so we are
trying to make it as relatable and cool as possible. Some of their favorite
characters will model what it’s like to be caught reading. The pictures that we
capture in the school will be displayed along side the posters.
Once a month we will have a “Get Caught Reading with your Parent” event
where students and their parents will come after school and read in the media
center together. It will be themed and there will be food and refreshments. Each
group will get their picture taken while reading and be able to take it home as a
keepsake.
