HOW DOES YOUR
PRODUCT
REPRESENT A
SPECIFIC SOCIAL
GROUP?
BY LUCY HYTNER
CLASS
The characters in my opening sequence are portrayed to be a
stereotypical middle classed family who are a white English
family. It is obvious when watching my opening sequence
what class they are by the way in which they act and the
place where it is set.
The way in which they are dressed conveys that they are not
working class or upper class. The mother in the opening
sequence could be portrayed as a stereotypical middle
classed housewife and mother, she is not shown much in the
sequence but when you do see her she is dressed nicely,
(like a stereotypical middle class mother might dress). The
fact that I decided on having middle classed mother because
she was able to represent a lot of mothers going through the
same thing who are around the same age, she is also
relatable in the opening sequence for other mothers viewing
the opening sequence. The fact that she is the conventional
age of a mother means that she is very similar to all those
mothers in real life and therefore this would further enforce
her as being a relatable character.
The children are also middle classed, but obviously this is
less obvious than the mother as they are just kids and so
therefore they represent all little children as the way in which
they act is stereotypical to how most children that age would
act. These two children are both stereotypes, they are young
children who are filled with innocence and don’t understand
a lot about the world around them.
AGE
Having characters with contrasting ages does not make it
more relatable to other ages, as young children would not be
able to see the film. The fact that this film is circled around a
family of three may make it appeal to single mothers as well
as family’s, and know where in the film do you see a father,
this means that people may watch the opening sequence as
the mother may be relatable to those who do not have a
father to help them.
GENDER
Having a mother have power of two little boys, could be a
little unconventional because the stereotype is that the man
is always in power. Obviously because she is their mother
she has the power, but we also think of younger girls as
being more innocent and fragile than young boys, this
therefore is unconventional that I have used two boys,
however I wanted to go against stereotypes that only girls
get abducted.
LOCATION
The location of my opening sequence could represent social
groups that live in the countryside. This is because all of my
sequence is set in the countryside, therefore portrayed as a
middle class family going on a walk.
OVERALL
In my opening sequence it is quite clear what class the
characters from my opening sequence are, through the way
that they are portrayed, when watching my final task you
would be able to figure out what class they portray through
their actions and the way that they are dressed.
