Report Summary
Global demand to approach 120 million units in 2015
World demand for motorcycles powered by internal combustion engines (ICEs) and
electric motors (“e-cycles”) will grow 6.3 percent annually through 2015 to 119
million units, reflecting both the expected rebound in the developed “triad” markets
(the US, Western Europe and Japan) and continued increases in demand in
emerging markets. Sales revenues will expand strongly as well, increasing 8.3
percent annually to $66 billion in 2015 as the triad markets return to economic
health.
Motorcycles powered by ICEs, the most dominant segment worldwide, will
experience slower growth than e-cycles, expanding 5.9 percent annually to 80
million vehicles in 2015. Growth will be constrained by aging populations in triad
markets, the continued transition of key emerging markets away from motorcycles
to light vehicles, and the rising efforts by governments to limit ICE motorcycle use
in urban areas.
E-cycles” to maintain prominence in China
Electric-powered cycles have risen to prominence due to their explosive growth in
China, which in 2010 represented 93 percent of the total global market for these
types. Electric cycles will register stronger growth than ICE motorcycles, but from a
smaller unit base. They trade off lower performance against cheaper prices
compared to ICE motorcycles. Beside lower purchase prices, sales of battery-
powered two-wheelers will be driven by their low cost of operation, more user-
friendly operation and lack of harmful emissions.
ICE motorcycles to remain dominant worldwide
ICE motorcycles will remain dominant throughout the forecast period, with light
motorcycles -- which offer greater power and better performance than many
scooters, mopeds and motorbikes, but have lower price tags and are less expensive
to operate than medium and heavy motorcycles -- outselling other ICE product
types to maintain their position as the largest single segment in terms of unit
volume in the motorcycle market. The North American market will experience the
strongest growth through 2015 as the US begins to regain some of the ICE
motorcycle volume lost during the “Great Recession” and sees additional e-cycle
2. growth. Absent of US rebound effects, the fastest-growing market will be the
Africa/Mideast region based on its rapidly expanding population and rising income
levels. The third fastest-growing region is projected to be Eastern Europe, which
will expand from a small base. Population increases and higher standards of living
will also stimulate demand in the Asia/Pacific region, which will post the fourth
strongest gains, followed by Central and South America. The Chinese motorcycle
market -- by far the largest worldwide -- is maturing as incomes rise, a legitimate
used car market takes shape, and increasing numbers of cities ban both ICE
machines and e-cycles.
Product demand will expand at a more moderate rate in developed countries
beyond the US, where light vehicles are the primary form of personal
transportation, and motorcycles are generally considered to be luxury goods used
for recreational purposes. Nevertheless, high energy prices, city center congestion
(especially in Western Europe) and personal income growth will provide some
momentum to motorcycle sales advances in these areas.
