WANT A GIRL? WANT A BOY?
Some say eat chocolate for a girl or red meat
for a boy. But do these myths work? Well if
you are keen for a particular sex it can‘t hurt
to try. If you are reading this and you are
already pregnant check our onsite article on
myths for finding out the sex.
So if you have a particular preference for
your babies sex some say -
It's all in the timing...or the direction
Many people check their daily horoscope for
guidance, so it isn‘t surprising the same
forces can dictate when to make love if you
want to pick your baby's sex?
If you want a boy...
 Have sex at night
 Make love when there's a quarter moon in
the sky
 Mark your calendar — more boys are
conceived on odd days of the month
 Follow the compass — it is believed
pointing the woman's head north while
you make love guarantees a boy
If you want a girl...
 Do the baby dance when the moon is full
 Make a date for love in the afternoon
 Enjoy your pleasures on the even days of
the month
Keeping your cool
It is believed being relaxed when you
conceive means you'll have a girl. If you're a
worrier it‘s going to be a boy.
But temperature may play a role too. Some
say a man's testicles should be cool before
you have sex if you want a daughter; for a
son, warm them up.
This follows the belief about boxers versus
briefs — go for tighty-whities if you want a
boy, but hang loose if it‘s a girl you are after.
Your child is what you eat
Many believe what you eat before
conceiving may affect what sex appears nine
months later.
If you want a boy...
 Eat more meat — the redder the better
 Stick with salty snacks
 Dads-to-be: Stock up on fizzy sodas,
especially cola drinks
If you want a girl...
 Both partners should eat lots of fish and
vegetables
 Give in to your chocolate craving, or just
eat sweets in general
Ideal for newborns to 5 year olds

The joy of sex
How you make love can also be an
influence.
If you want a boy...
 Lie down after sex and stay there for a
while. That will give the boy sperm a
chance to beat the girl sperm to the egg
 Focus on his pleasure — if the male
partner climaxes first, supposedly you're
guaranteed a boy
 Make love standing up
 Ladies sleep on the left side of your
partner
 Try the rear-entry position
 Give in to seduction — if the man is the
one to suggest some baby-making, you'll
get a boy
If you want a girl...
 Give the missionary position a go
 Make love with the woman on top
 Focus on her pleasure — if the woman
orgasms before her partner, this is the
sign for a girl
 Take the lead — if the woman initiates
sex, you'll get a girl
And finally ...

the relationship at the time of conception.
MATERNITY CLOTHES TIPS
So why maternity clothes? Why not just wear
bigger and baggier clothes? Well unless you
want to just look like a tent your whole
pregnancy – and don‘t get me wrong there‘s
nothing wrong with time out, flopping around
in a big baggy t-shirt and the hubby‘s boxers
but there are a lot of benefits to wearing
maternity clothes and a range of styles that
are very flattering without having to break
the budget. Below we have a list of some of
the best options to have around in your
wardrobe when pregnant and for maternity
style tips see our onsite article.

Maternity clothes are designed to make
you more comfortable in pregnancy. They
fit differently than regular clothes so that
you can still move comfortably and enjoy
good coverage of your body. What feels
good to one woman may not feel good to
another.
One of the first questions is when should I
start wearing maternity clothes? Well really
you should start wearing maternity clothes
when you can no longer comfortably fit into
your pre-pregnancy clothes.
By having a few essential maternity clothes
and combining them with existing, maternity
friendly items in your wardrobe such as
shawls, cardigans and more flowing, longer
tops you can end up with a great variety of
mix and match.
So here are a few suggestions on maternity
wardrobe wear-
Maternity Wear Checklist -
 Classic T-shirt – Make it stretchy with a
neckline with room to grow
 Men's-style button-down shirt (raid the
hubby‘s wardrobe!) - Can be worn with
anything for a classic look
 Black stretch leggings - Comfortable
bottoms that go with everything
 Loose-fitting pants - Roomy pants with an
elastic or tie waist, comfortable for
everyday wear
 Black dress – If you like to go out find a
flattering one – this may be one of the
more expensive of your maternity items
but help you feel really great!
 Maternity underwear – Important support
for your breasts, stomach and back
 Tank top - The most comfortable
loungewear
 Maternity-style blue jeans - These look
great with sweaters, tanks, tunics, button
shirts and jackets
 Maternity Support tights - Help prevent
varicose veins and takes pressure off
legs and feet
 Fun accessories - Liven up your new
wardrobe with necklaces, scarves, and

more, of course you can use these after

Final Tips –
To finish here are a couple of tips for
extended dress wear and that might just
save an awkward situation towards the end
of your pregnancy!
 When your pants get uncomfortably tight,
loop a rubber band over the button, then
slip it through the buttonhole and back
over the button – and cover with a long
shirt.
 Many women's feet get bigger during
pregnancy. If you find yourself shopping
for larger shoes, choose slip-ons so you
won't have to bend over and lace up
tackling your beautiful baby bump!
SLEEP BABY SLEEP – Part-1
By Kathy Fray
(See our onsite article for Part 2 - Do’s and Don’ts
Regarding Baby Sleep)
When heavily pregnant with your first baby,
you can often begin to feel rather swamped
with peoples‘ remarks regarding the pending
sleep deprivation which is going to beset you
once your baby is born…
―You should appreciate your peaceful night
sleeps while you can!‖ … ―You know babies
are easier to look after ‗in‘ than ‗out‘!‖ …
―You‘ll be falling asleep at 8 o‘clock out of
shear exhaustion, you know – no more late
nights for you for a long while‖.
Oh, and isn‘t it foul! All that condescending,
patronising advice – with the most awful part
being that you know it‘s actually probably
true. Unless of course you ordered your
model to be a baby with the customised
luxury accessory of being born a great
sleeper – oh no, did you forget to tick that
box?!
Let‘s face it, probably the most insidious part
of being a new Parent (primarily a new
Mummy), is the reality that it can be a jolly
long time until you will be able to relish eight
hours of uninterrupted sleep again.
Certainly, Sleep Deprivation must rate as
one of the most challenging difficulties for
the majority of new mothers.
You see, when you are woken from an
uncompleted ‗sleep cycle‘, and then go back
to sleep, the cycle begins all over again from

the beginning. So it is very possible to be
having say five 2-hour naps over a 24 hour
period – but still be REM (Rapid Eye
Movement) sleep-deprived. And depriving
human-beings of REM-sleep is recognized
as an effective form of torture. Your body
goes completely out of equilibrium, heavily
due to the homeostatic imbalance within your
brain‘s neuro-transmitters. You can‘t think
straight, you‘re unable to concentrate, you
feel despondent, your body easily becomes
unwell – in fact you can even be an unsafe
driver!
It is no understatement to realise, that
learning how to teach your new baby to be a
good sleeper, can pay huge rewarding
dividends to you and your household – and
to your baby, as scientific correlations are
being made between children‘s intelligence
and their sleep patterns.
However, the subject of parents directing
infant sleep habits is a topic rife with
controversy and oozing with ―expert‖
opinions. But a good first place to start is to
have a clear-ish understanding of how much
sleep is ―Normal‖ (bearing in mind that the
only one thing we can truly name as
―Normal‖ is a cycle on a Washing Machine).

The topic of Infant Sleep philosophies is an
area where you will need to make some
black and white decisions, based on
information mostly in shades of gray. And
the bad news is, that you will be needing to
repeat that process on hundreds or even
thousands of parenting decisions as your
wee sweet little darling grows. Our lives are
so complicated these days by data
asphyxiation, that parenting instincts can be
left paralyzed by the overload of opposing
information!

LEARNING TO SWIM: THE
PHYSICAL BENEFITS FOR YOUR
BABY
By Northern Arena
Teaching your baby to swim might help them
overcome their initial fear of water and
provide a great excuse to have some fun and
exercise at the same time, but it could have
other benefits as well.
Recently, researchers from Norway and
Britain found that children who had taken
baby swimming classes did better on tests
involving gripping and reaching as well as
balance, compared to children who had no
experience swimming as babies. This helps
their physical progress later in life as well,
along with providing them with some
essential social skills.
All babies have primitive and postural
reflexes, one of which is the Mammalian
Diving Reflex, which is strong between 0-6
months. The Mammalian Diving Reflex is
most well developed in children, and is
gradually decreased with age. It enables
them to naturally breath-hold when
submerged, and this can be seen quite
clearly when you plunge your baby into the
water during a swimming lesson or in the
family pool. When baby‘s face enters the
water covering their forehead and nose area;
the body automatically redistributes the
blood flow ensuring the 'key' organs such as
the brain and heart, receive a constant
supply of oxygen.
This reflex is perfectly natural and leaves
around eight months of age. Gradually this
reflex turns into the 'Dive Response', which

continues into adulthood. As your baby is
only submerged for a matter of seconds
during a lesson, it is the 'Dive Response' that
then kicks in and helps them as they learn to
swim. Swimming lessons will ensure that
they are comfortable with this reflex, and see
them becoming happier and more confident
in the water.
Gross and fine motor skills are also
strengthened and coordination and balance
are enhanced in babies who enter the water
early. For this reason the younger your little
one starts in lessons the easier the transition
is to enjoying the water. A baby who is used
to being stationary can move about
independently in the pool as they learn
balance and coordination. The motion and
sensation of the water gives them an
awareness of self that otherwise would not
be gained at such a young age, and sets
them up for life.
Additionally, early experiences in water allow
little ones to better develop their
psychomotor skills, because there they can
move more freely and begin to understand
concepts of distance and movement. Their
cardio-respiratory system is also
strengthened as the baby exercises his or
her heart and lungs.
On the whole, a child who starts lessons
early is far more relaxed and happy in the
water, and in a country as water loving as
New Zealand this is vital.
Based in Silverdale, Northern Arena has four
cutting-edge, heated pools – all indoors.
The pools are treated by ultra violet light
similar to the way drinking water is treated,
allowing for a low level of chlorine that
makes them ideal for babies and those with
sensitive skin. All of their lessons are
designed to be fun as well as educational,
enhancing enjoyment and confidence in the
water.

ACTIVITIES FOR TODDLERS
Toddler activities can be a difficult topic as
so much depends on age (there is a huge
difference of course between a 2 year old
and 4 year old) and development.
Carers have to be wary as toddlers often
want to put things in their mouths, attention
span can be very short and understanding
directions is very limited, especially for the
younger toddlers. However there are lots of
things you can do that can be both fun and
help in your child‘s development.
Here are a selection of activities most
suitable for the 1 year to 3 year age range.
For some great activities for older toddlers
scan the QR code at the end of this article or
visit the Linku2 website page listed at the
end of this article for a great video link.
With young toddlers you need to allow them
to explore what you give them. Don‘t plan a
specific activity as it will be unlikely to be
seen through unless you are happy to do it
in stages! Exploration and discovery is the
key! Often a young toddler may be
interested briefly in the activity and then the
attention span is lost. However, they will
often want to come back to it later so, if you
can leave the item out. Remember however
if they have a tendancy to put things in their
mouth you must be aware of this and expect
them to do this.
A simple activity for a young toddler is to
play and explore with materials, pieces of
different fabrics, papers, bubble wrap, egg
carton, tissue paper, small boxes. Let them
start to explore with their imagination. Just

Let them use their senses to discover touch,
smell, taste. Some examples could include
a bowl of soapy, bubbly water, flour, a
paste of flour mixed with water, ice cubes,
jelly, home made play dough or cooked
pasta shapes. These are great hands on
experiences.
Free play can also be great fun. Get some
pom poms, pots and pans, stacking cups,
pouring water through a kitchen colander,
clean baby food jars let them fill with pasta
shapes or screw the lids on and off. Again
cardboard boxes can be wonderful for the
imagination.
Crafts can be a little more difficult but try
simple things such as making an egg carton
train with pipe cleaners or rubber bands, be
creative with toilet roll tubes, foam shapes
or sticker art. Get messy with papier mache
or enjoy finger painting.
Balloons can be great fun for all sorts of
games as can building blocks.
Outdoor activities can also be great and it
doesn‘t have to cost anything to be both fun
and a learning experience for young
toddlers as well as sometimes helping out
the household! Why not run through the
garden sprinklers, investigate the garden
with a magnifying glass, play with the
garden hose, wash the car, hunt for bugs,
make chalk patterns on the drive then wash
with the hose, dig in the garden, watch the
cloud shapes, make mud cakes, build with
stones or rocks in the garden or pick daisies
and get Mum or Dad to make a daisy chain.

TODDLER DISCIPLINE
Before you can enforce discipline and rules for
your toddler you need to ensure there is a
healthy relationship between you. Knowing and
understanding your particular child can make it
that bit easier to discipline. Once your child
trusts you to meet their needs, they will trust
you to set the limits.
The following gives some ways for toddler
discipline:
Time out - This is one of the most common
toddler discipline method. Keep the time brief
around one minute per year of age. Toddlers
don't usually stay in the corner so you need to
stop what you are doing and stand over them
making sure they can't engage your facial/body
language. Once time out is over, remind them
gently but firmly what they did wrong in simple
language and then if they do it again (often the
immediate case until they fully understand)
repeat. Discipline must occur at the time of the
action and not later. So even if you are out of
your home, you must be prepared to discipline
them. Be discreet, and don‘t do it in front of
others to avoid bringing down their self-
esteem. Remind toddlers of the rules
frequently when out on an outing or in the

house if necessary.
Distract and divert - The best form of
toddler discipline is redirection. First, you
have to distract them from their original
intention and then, quickly divert them toward
a safer alternative. Give them something else
to do for example, helping with the household
chores and soon they will be enjoying
themselves rather than investing a lot of
emotional energy into the original plan.
Ignoring temper tantrums - Ignoring the
behaviour or making statements such as
―when you throw a tantrum I can‘t hear you‖
or ―I don‘t like watching temper tantrums so

let me know when you are finished and we
will talk‖, will both show and tell the child that
their display will not gain control over the
situation or the parent.
Temper tantrums are usually dramatic,
intense and full of emotion. With a little
practice and persistence, parents can learn
how to stop the drama of a temper tantrum
and change the situation to a calm, quiet
discussion. Keep control and keep the peace.
Encourage co-operation - Your child is more
likely to do what you say if you uses soft
approaches. Ask rather than tell. Say "Would
you give me the crayons, please?" instead of
demanding "Bring me the crayons right now!"
Set Limits - Much of your toddler discipline
depends on your ability to set limits.
Boundaries provide security for those with an
adventurous nature, but inexperience can
lead them astray. For example, your toddler
doesn't want to hold your hand as you cross a
street or parking lot together. You firmly set a
limit: street or parking lot crossing is only
done while holding hands. There is no option.
It is important to achieve the right balance
between freedom and constraints.
Limit-setting teaches a valuable lesson for
life: the world is full of yeses and nos. You
decide what behaviour you cannot allow and
stick to that limit. This will be different for
each family and each stage of development.
Toddlers want someone to set limits. It makes
them feel secure and loved, and helps them
to understand boundaries. As a parent you
have to ensure the rules you set are simple,
easy to understand, and consistent.
Provide structure - Set up conditions for
toddler discipline that encourage desirable
behaviour. Structure protects and redirects.
With a bit of preplanning you can remove
most of the "no's" so a generally "yes"
environment prevails.
Structure changes as the child grows. At all
levels of development restructuring the
child's environment is one of your most
valuable discipline strategies.
Positive reinforcement - Studies show
toddler discipline using positive
reinforcement works far better than
punishment. Rather than focusing only on
those things that irritate us and becoming
habitual scolders, "catch your kids doing
something right and reward them."
Toddlers tune out a lot so if you are always
saying "No" this is all they hear. Try and
give them lots of positive feedback.

  • 4. WANT A GIRL? WANT A BOY? Some say eat chocolate for a girl or red meat for a boy. But do these myths work? Well if you are keen for a particular sex it can‘t hurt to try. If you are reading this and you are already pregnant check our onsite article on myths for finding out the sex. So if you have a particular preference for your babies sex some say - It's all in the timing...or the direction Many people check their daily horoscope for guidance, so it isn‘t surprising the same forces can dictate when to make love if you want to pick your baby's sex? If you want a boy...  Have sex at night  Make love when there's a quarter moon in the sky  Mark your calendar — more boys are conceived on odd days of the month  Follow the compass — it is believed pointing the woman's head north while you make love guarantees a boy If you want a girl...  Do the baby dance when the moon is full  Make a date for love in the afternoon  Enjoy your pleasures on the even days of the month Keeping your cool It is believed being relaxed when you conceive means you'll have a girl. If you're a worrier it‘s going to be a boy. But temperature may play a role too. Some say a man's testicles should be cool before you have sex if you want a daughter; for a son, warm them up. This follows the belief about boxers versus briefs — go for tighty-whities if you want a boy, but hang loose if it‘s a girl you are after. Your child is what you eat Many believe what you eat before conceiving may affect what sex appears nine months later. If you want a boy...  Eat more meat — the redder the better  Stick with salty snacks  Dads-to-be: Stock up on fizzy sodas, especially cola drinks If you want a girl...  Both partners should eat lots of fish and vegetables  Give in to your chocolate craving, or just eat sweets in general Ideal for newborns to 5 year olds Need quality care for your child? • 5. The joy of sex How you make love can also be an influence. If you want a boy...  Lie down after sex and stay there for a while. What feels good to one woman may not feel good to another. One of the first questions is when should I start wearing maternity clothes? Well really you should start wearing maternity clothes when you can no longer comfortably fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes. By having a few essential maternity clothes and combining them with existing, maternity friendly items in your wardrobe such as shawls, cardigans and more flowing, longer tops you can end up with a great variety of mix and match. So here are a few suggestions on maternity wardrobe wear- Maternity Wear Checklist -  Classic T-shirt – Make it stretchy with a neckline with room to grow  Men's-style button-down shirt (raid the hubby‘s wardrobe!) - Can be worn with anything for a classic look  Black stretch leggings - Comfortable bottoms that go with everything  Loose-fitting pants - Roomy pants with an elastic or tie waist, comfortable for everyday wear  Black dress – If you like to go out find a flattering one – this may be one of the more expensive of your maternity items but help you feel really great!  Maternity underwear – Important support for your breasts, stomach and back  Tank top - The most comfortable loungewear  Maternity-style blue jeans - These look great with sweaters, tanks, tunics, button shirts and jackets  Maternity Support tights - Help prevent varicose veins and takes pressure off legs and feet  Fun accessories - Liven up your new wardrobe with necklaces, scarves, and Early Childhood Education Specialized infant and toddler area Stimulating educational programme High staff to child ratios Fully qualified, experienced staff Full time and sessional visits Safe and secure environment Nursery - Ages 0-2 years Preschool - Ages 2-5 years Sure Start Early Childhood Education 26 Brixton Road, Manly Ph: 424 2315  E: sure.start@vodafone.co.nz Sure Start Whangaparaoa Kindergarten - 7 Motutapu Ave, Manly, Ph: 424 5130 Email: whangaparaoa@naka.co.nz Enrolling now, Limited Spaces Visit or Call Today

SLEEP BABY SLEEP – Part-1 By Kathy Fray (See our onsite article for Part 2 - Do’s and Don’ts Regarding Baby Sleep) When heavily pregnant with your first baby, you can often begin to feel rather swamped with peoples‘ remarks regarding the pending sleep deprivation which is going to beset you once your baby is born… ―You should appreciate your peaceful night sleeps while you can!‖ … ―You know babies are easier to look after ‗in‘ than ‗out‘!‖ … ―You‘ll be falling asleep at 8 o‘clock out of shear exhaustion, you know – no more late nights for you for a long while‖. Oh, and isn‘t it foul! All that condescending, patronising advice – with the most awful part being that you know it‘s actually probably true. Unless of course you ordered your model to be a baby with the customised luxury accessory of being born a great sleeper – oh no, did you forget to tick that box?! Let‘s face it, probably the most insidious part of being a new Parent (primarily a new Mummy), is the reality that it can be a jolly long time until you will be able to relish eight hours of uninterrupted sleep again. Certainly, Sleep Deprivation must rate as one of the most challenging difficulties for the majority of new mothers. You see, when you are woken from an uncompleted ‗sleep cycle‘, and then go back to sleep, the cycle begins all over again from MATERNITY STYLE TIPS... And depriving human-beings of REM-sleep is recognized as an effective form of torture. Your body goes completely out of equilibrium, heavily due to the homeostatic imbalance within your brain‘s neuro-transmitters. You can‘t think straight, you‘re unable to concentrate, you feel despondent, your body easily becomes unwell – in fact you can even be an unsafe driver! It is no understatement to realise, that learning how to teach your new baby to be a good sleeper, can pay huge rewarding dividends to you and your household – and to your baby, as scientific correlations are being made between children‘s intelligence and their sleep patterns. However, the subject of parents directing infant sleep habits is a topic rife with controversy and oozing with ―expert‖ opinions. But a good first place to start is to have a clear-ish understanding of how much sleep is ―Normal‖ (bearing in mind that the only one thing we can truly name as ―Normal‖ is a cycle on a Washing Machine). Recently, researchers from Norway and Britain found that children who had taken baby swimming classes did better on tests involving gripping and reaching as well as balance, compared to children who had no experience swimming as babies. This helps their physical progress later in life as well, along with providing them with some essential social skills. All babies have primitive and postural reflexes, one of which is the Mammalian Diving Reflex, which is strong between 0-6 months. The Mammalian Diving Reflex is most well developed in children, and is gradually decreased with age. It enables them to naturally breath-hold when submerged, and this can be seen quite clearly when you plunge your baby into the water during a swimming lesson or in the family pool. When baby‘s face enters the water covering their forehead and nose area; the body automatically redistributes the blood flow ensuring the 'key' organs such as the brain and heart, receive a constant supply of oxygen. This reflex is perfectly natural and leaves around eight months of age. Gradually this reflex turns into the 'Dive Response', which Check out what we can do for your event by scanning this QR code with your smartphone or tablet Download a QR code scanner at www.qrstuff.com Or text “QR” to 710 (Vodafone)  Corporate Events  Christmas Parties  Special Occasions  On-Site Management  Room Dressing  Baby showers  Christenings For an obligation free chat call 021 716 713 hellen@eventdesigners.co.nz

Swimming lessons will ensure that they are comfortable with this reflex, and see them becoming happier and more confident in the water. Gross and fine motor skills are also strengthened and coordination and balance are enhanced in babies who enter the water early. For this reason the younger your little one starts in lessons the easier the transition is to enjoying the water. A baby who is used to being stationary can move about independently in the pool as they learn balance and coordination. The motion and sensation of the water gives them an awareness of self that otherwise would not be gained at such a young age, and sets them up for life. Additionally, early experiences in water allow little ones to better develop their psychomotor skills, because there they can move more freely and begin to understand concepts of distance and movement. Their cardio-respiratory system is also strengthened as the baby exercises his or her heart and lungs. On the whole, a child who starts lessons early is far more relaxed and happy in the water, and in a country as water loving as New Zealand this is vital. Based in Silverdale, Northern Arena has four cutting-edge, heated pools – all indoors. The pools are treated by ultra violet light similar to the way drinking water is treated, allowing for a low level of chlorine that makes them ideal for babies and those with sensitive skin. All of their lessons are designed to be fun as well as educational, enhancing enjoyment and confidence in the water. Ph 421 9700, W: www.northernarena.co.nz ACTIVITIES FOR TODDLERS Toddler activities can be a difficult topic as so much depends on age (there is a huge difference of course between a 2 year old and 4 year old) and development. Carers have to be wary as toddlers often want to put things in their mouths, attention span can be very short and understanding directions is very limited, especially for the younger toddlers. However there are lots of things you can do that can be both fun and help in your child‘s development. Here are a selection of activities most suitable for the 1 year to 3 year age range. For some great activities for older toddlers scan the QR code at the end of this article or visit the Linku2 website page listed at the end of this article for a great video link. With young toddlers you need to allow them to explore what you give them. Don‘t plan a specific activity as it will be unlikely to be seen through unless you are happy to do it in stages! Exploration and discovery is the key! Often a young toddler may be interested briefly in the activity and then the attention span is lost. However, they will often want to come back to it later so, if you can leave the item out. Remember however if they have a tendancy to put things in their mouth you must be aware of this and expect them to do this. A simple activity for a young toddler is to play and explore with materials, pieces of different fabrics, papers, bubble wrap, egg carton, tissue paper, small boxes. Let them start to explore with their imagination. Some examples could include a bowl of soapy, bubbly water, flour, a paste of flour mixed with water, ice cubes, jelly, home made play dough or cooked pasta shapes. These are great hands on experiences. Free play can also be great fun. Get some pom poms, pots and pans, stacking cups, pouring water through a kitchen colander, clean baby food jars let them fill with pasta shapes or screw the lids on and off. Again cardboard boxes can be wonderful for the imagination. Crafts can be a little more difficult but try simple things such as making an egg carton train with pipe cleaners or rubber bands, be creative with toilet roll tubes, foam shapes or sticker art. Get messy with papier mache or enjoy finger painting. Balloons can be great fun for all sorts of games as can building blocks. Outdoor activities can also be great and it doesn‘t have to cost anything to be both fun and a learning experience for young toddlers as well as sometimes helping out the household! Why not run through the garden sprinklers, investigate the garden with a magnifying glass, play with the garden hose, wash the car, hunt for bugs, make chalk patterns on the drive then wash with the hose, dig in the garden, watch the cloud shapes, make mud cakes, build with stones or rocks in the garden or pick daisies and get Mum or Dad to make a daisy chain. We are always interested in ideas you may have so please email us at admin@linku2hibiscuscoast.co.nz TODDLER DISCIPLINE Before you can enforce discipline and rules for your toddler you need to ensure there is a healthy relationship between you. Knowing and understanding your particular child can make it that bit easier to discipline. Once your child trusts you to meet their needs, they will trust you to set the limits. The following gives some ways for toddler discipline: Time out - This is one of the most common toddler discipline method. Keep the time brief around one minute per year of age. Toddlers don't usually stay in the corner so you need to stop what you are doing and stand over them making sure they can't engage your facial/body language. Once time out is over, remind them gently but firmly what they did wrong in simple language and then if they do it again (often the immediate case until they fully understand) repeat. Discipline must occur at the time of the action and not later. So even if you are out of your home, you must be prepared to discipline them. Be discreet, and don‘t do it in front of others to avoid bringing down their self- esteem. First, you have to distract them from their original intention and then, quickly divert them toward a safer alternative. Give them something else to do for example, helping with the household chores and soon they will be enjoying themselves rather than investing a lot of emotional energy into the original plan. Temper tantrums are usually dramatic, intense and full of emotion. With a little practice and persistence, parents can learn how to stop the drama of a temper tantrum and change the situation to a calm, quiet discussion. Keep control and keep the peace. Encourage co-operation - Your child is more likely to do what you say if you uses soft approaches. Ask rather than tell. Say "Would you give me the crayons, please?" instead of demanding "Bring me the crayons right now!" Set Limits - Much of your toddler discipline depends on your ability to set limits. Boundaries provide security for those with an adventurous nature, but inexperience can lead them astray. For example, your toddler doesn't want to hold your hand as you cross a street or parking lot together. You firmly set a limit: street or parking lot crossing is only done while holding hands. There is no option. It is important to achieve the right balance between freedom and constraints. Limit-setting teaches a valuable lesson for life: the world is full of yeses and nos. You decide what behaviour you cannot allow and stick to that limit. This will be different for each family and each stage of development. Toddlers want someone to set limits. It makes them feel secure and loved, and helps them to understand boundaries. As a parent you have to ensure the rules you set are simple, easy to understand, and consistent. Provide structure - Set up conditions for toddler discipline that encourage desirable behaviour. Structure protects and redirects. With a bit of preplanning you can remove most of the "no's" so a generally "yes" environment prevails. Structure changes as the child grows. At all levels of development restructuring the child's environment is one of your most valuable discipline strategies. Positive reinforcement - Studies show toddler discipline using positive reinforcement works far better than punishment. Rather than focusing only on those things that irritate us and becoming habitual scolders, "catch your kids doing something right and reward them." Toddlers tune out a lot so if you are always saying "No" this is all they hear. Try and give them lots of positive feedback. TODDLER SAFETY IN THE HOME ...
