In 2010…
• 80% of internet traffic to news sites was
  concentrated on the top 7% of sites.

• 67% of these sites were controlled by news
  organisations from the pre internet era.

• 13% were accounted for by content aggregators.

• Only 14% of these sites were online only
  operations that produced mostly original
  reportorial content.
• In other words, the rise of the internet has not
  undermined leading news organisations, on
  the contrary it has enabled them to extend
  their dominance across technologies.

• In Britain there was no online independent
  among the top 10 news sites in 2011.
• In 2011 Google and yahoo tended to privilege
  leading news providers in their search
  results, reinforcing their dominance.

• This defends the leading news brands’
  oligopoly.
