The world goes virtual. Interesting enough my discussions with Gartner highlighted the need to manage both the virtual and physical worlds…a key differentiator.
Snapshot is NOT the same as CDPThe Snapshot feature preserves the contents of the virtual disk at a point in time and can be created when data is known to be in a good state. With CDP, a data-protected virtual disk is provided with continuous protection for up to a 48-hour period and allows the creation of a rollback at any point in time preserved in the history log, regardless of the state.Another difference is that snapshots can exist indefinitely, but rollbacks will expire when the point-in-time of the rollback (rollback point) exceeds 48-hours or the maximum history log size is reached and the data for the rollback is de-staged.
Adding all of this up, let’s set some realistic target savings. With the ability provided by a storage hypervisor to break vendor locks, retain older gear longer, loose the cost of on-array controller value add software, and use less expensive gear, a reduction in storage capex spending of at least 10% is not an unrealistic possibility…And the DataCore customers I have spoken with over the last few weeks who are using the latest SANsymphony-V storage hypervisor, are telling me that they are realizing as high as 40% reductions in OPEX costs…All without compromising the service levels that their bosses in the front office have come to expect from IT rockstars! That’s pretty compelling, and maybe something for you to consider…
