2. Plan
• The need for a supervision tool
• Choices within Sakai
• Design choice
• Tool implementation
• Demo
• Future developments
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 2
3. The need for a supervision tool
• Sakai is heavily used for research and
collaboration
• Student supervision is usually done with
project sites (one site per student)
• There is a lack of a global and uniform view
of the supervision process
• Supervision actors are students, instructors
and administrative staff and external staff
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 3
4. Choices within Sakai
• Use project sites:
• Must be created by instructors
• Typically they are all different
• Manuals, guidelines must be replicated for
every site
• Use Checklist tool:
• One site per student
• Difficult to adapt to local needs
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 4
5. Design choice (I)
• A new tool
• Allowing student, instructor, administrative
and degree director’s view
• Allowing shared resources:
• For students with the same supervisor
• For students in the same degree
• For students in the same school/department
• Allowing different workflows, per degree
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 5
6. Design choice (II)
• A degree director has a site with
information about all students in that
degree
• A supervisor has a site with all her
students
• A student sees the supervisor site
• Resources can be shared hierarchically
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 6
7. Tool implementation (I)
• There are 4 different tools:
• Management site:
• Create workflows
• Choose school/dept director, and create the site
• School/dept site: Director’s view
• Choose degree director and administrative staff
• Choose degree workflow
• Upload resources for all degrees
• View/edit student’s progress
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 7
8. Tool implementation (II)
• School/dept site: Degree director’s view
• Assign supervisors to students
• View/edit student’s progress
• School/dept site: Administrative view
• View/edit student’s progress
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 8
9. Tool implementation (III)
• Supervision site: Instructor’s view
• Use site tools (Resources, Announcements, …)
• View/edit student’s progress
• Supervision site: Student’s view
• Use site tools (Resources, Announcements, …)
• View/edit own progress
March 2010 European Sakai Conference – Valencia - Spain.. 9
10. Tool implementation (IV)
• Supervision data is fed by the SIS
• Tool written in Javascript + REST
• Resource sharing done via custom Content

16. Future developments
• Generate report and statistics about
supervision progress
• Allow for custom workflows by instructors
