The need for a supervision tool

• Sakai is heavily used for research and
  collaboration
• Student supervision is usually done with
  project sites (one site per student)
• There is a lack of a global and uniform view
  of the supervision process
• Supervision actors are students, instructors
  and administrative staff and external staff

Choices within Sakai
• Use project sites:
  • Must be created by instructors
  • Typically they are all different
  • Manuals, guidelines must be replicated for
    every site
• Use Checklist tool:
  • One site per student
  • Difficult to adapt to local needs

Design choice (I)
• A new tool
• Allowing student, instructor, administrative
  and degree director’s view
• Allowing shared resources:
  • For students with the same supervisor
  • For students in the same degree
  • For students in the same school/department
• Allowing different workflows, per degree

Design choice (II)
• A degree director has a site with
  information about all students in that
  degree
• A supervisor has a site with all her
  students
• A student sees the supervisor site
• Resources can be shared hierarchically

• There are 4 different tools:
  • Management site:
     • Create workflows
     • Choose school/dept director, and create the site
  • School/dept site: Director’s view
     • Choose degree director and administrative staff
     • Choose degree workflow
     • Upload resources for all degrees
     • View/edit student’s progress
