An analysis of Teachers’ comments about the advantages and issues of improving the use of digital textbooks in Pilot Schools The purpose of this research is to identify the advantages and issues of improving the use of digital textbooks in schools. For this objective, an online questionnaire was conducted to 134 representative teachers (Director or Head Teacher) of digital textbook pilot schools (elementary and middle schools) in South Korea during October 2015, and 119 teachers responded. The questionnaire contained 5 open-ended questions about the advantages and issues of improving the digital textbooks, classes using digital textbooks and managing the digital textbook pilot school. Results of the content analysis of the comments were categorized into 4 topics (development of students, digital textbook’s contents, digital textbook’s function, change of instruction). Each of the 4 topics included comments involving advantages and improvements. Though there were comments about digital textbooks’ side effects such as distractibility and eyestrain to students, positive feedback regarding the implement of students’ concentration, interest and self-directed learning attitudes outweighed the negative comments. Also, there were affirmative comments about the variety and volume of digital textbook contents and voices demanding more richness and high quality contents. In addition, there were positive and negative comments about digital textbook’s functions such as search, exam, note, etc.. Some of the comments were not focused on digital textbook’s functions and instead focused on keywords such as LMS (Learning Management System), function of control students’ PC, cloud platform. Pilot school teachers commented about diversification of in-class digital textbook usage (Flipped learning, Collaboration learning, Personalized learning, etc.) and preparation (class design, lesson study, etc.).

This presentation summarises the headline findings from the UCISA 2016 Survey of Technology Enhanced Learning, which tracks developments in the use of learning technologies across the UK higher education sector. In this year's Survey, special attention was directed to open learning activities, ranging from open course provision to badges and open accreditation methods for staff development. The Survey question-set also addressed learner analytics in greater depth than in past Surveys, with a focus on the different types of tool-sets which institutions are using and their deployment across courses. Respondents were invited to comment on how their institution is making use of analytics to evaluate the impact of TEL tools on the student learning experience and what this means for academic practice.

Using ePortfolio as Web 2.0 tool to foster reflective learning

OERs and MOOCs – the Romanian experience paper, authors Radu Vasiu, Diana Andone, presented at International Conference on Web & Open Access to Learning, 24-27 November 2014, Dubai, UEA. Using Open Educational Resources (OER) provides opportunities for collaboration both in the classroom and beyond. Started in 2008 and gathering momentum over the past two years, now an online phenomenon, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) reunite different perspectives over a globalized online learning. The paper analyses the use of OER and MOOCs in different study cases in Romanian universities. Several OER initiatives resulted from the over 1000 academia involved in the DidaTec lifelong learning and training for higher education teachers in the technical sciences and engineering field as a training course for university professors in 12 universities, within the aim of improving the use of ICT in higher education. Four universities from Romania started a Romanian MOOC environment, the UniCampus, which provides free access to valuable education in Romanian language, presented by well-known professors. The evaluation and quality assurance challenges of the Unicampus are mainly due to the restrictive educational setting in Romania. Two study cases on blending MOOCs in traditional higher education courses at undergraduate and Master level are also analysed from the impact on students’ motivation. Integrating MOOCs in blended learning empower students with new abilities and requires a new and open teacher model.

This paper is a report on a exploratory design research of educational intervention conducted on a public institute of education and technology. The institution of 3,000 students is an important regional educator in Sao Francisco Valley, which is known as one of the poorest areas in Brazil. There are remarkable problems of dropout rates in the school. The educational intervention presented here offers a new strategy to mitigate dropout rates by re-designing teaching of computer programming courses on the basis of a student-centered approach with emphasis on guided participation and project-based learning. The hypothesis is that these methods engage and motivate learners, and empower the learning community to support studying, in a more efficient way. This presentation reports results of a recent open education research collaboration between The African Council for Distance Education and The Open University (UK). Pathways to Learning: new approaches in higher education (OpenLearn, 2020a) hosted two free professional development programmes for university lecturers, instructional designers, professional staff, and managers who share responsibility for providing quality distance and online learning. • A Teacher Educator programme, Skills for 21st Century Learning and Teaching (OpenLearn, 2020b) • A Tertiary Educator programme, Take Your Teaching Online (OpenLearn, 2020c) The courses ran over six weeks between 13th July and 20th August, 2020, and was contextualized by a rapid rollout of online learning during the Coronavirus pandemic. The programmes combined a course of study using OER materials with supplementary activities including a total of 12 webinars and interactive events alongside use of new platforms created by The Open University’s Institute of Educational Technology: nQuire (Herodotou et al., 2018) and Our Journey (Coughlan et al., 2019). Key findings: • The pandemic led to a substantial shift in teaching across Africa and a requirement to better understand and gain experience of online learning. Change is likely to persist post-pandemic, although infrastructure and cultural barriers are reported. • The project surveys, interviews and the data generated through interactions that occurred in the programmes explores challenges and opportunities for online and blended learning across the African continent and globally. • The evaluation data provides evidence that the programmes led to important understanding of course design and confidence in online facilitation for a large majority of those who took part in them. • There is evidence that the programmes built confidence, particularly through the experiences of these educators themselves learning online with well-designed materials, and engaging with platforms and experts. • There is evidence that each of the elements and activities were appreciated by some learners. The open courses were seen as most useful alongside some webinars. Community events and forums added substantial value to these. • The flexibility offered in the programmes led to different behaviours. Many aimed to complete all the available activities despite time pressures and other barriers. Some were unable to attend live events so recordings were appreciated. • Given the courses were free to join and many educators faced barriers and pressures, retention figures were very positive with around 66% of those who took part in the first week completing the rest of these programmes. • Assessment, Open Educational Resources (OER), and understanding of technologies that can be used for online learning and learning design were areas that learners reported as being particularly valuable.

Vivemos uma época de uso e exploração acelerada do digital em todos os setores da atividade humana. A pandemia e as suas circunstâncias serviram para ancorar o que de mais profundo o digital pode oferecer: a rutura das noções tradicionais de tempo e espaço. O contexto atual é de transição, confrontando velhas práticas com as suas limitações e encontrando novos caminhos de aplicação. Isso leva a um ambiente aberto e fértil para inúmeras inovaçõescom capacidade de transformar práticas antigas. A sala de aula não é exceção e tanto podem agora novas práticas baseadas em plataformas digitais serem transportadas para esse espaço físico e coletivo onde se ensina e se aprende em conjunto, como se pode valorizar mais, as oportunidades de colaboração e atenção conjunta proporcionadas por estarmos a um mesmo tempo, num mesmo espaço. Nesse cenário, existem desafios e necessidades suficientes para manter o mundo centrado na atividade humana e nas pessoas, discutindo o papel da escola, da sala de aula e dos professores, num contexto de um mundo em transformação (digital e não só).

The last decade brings us a quite global, complex and complete digital ecosystem, the so called VUCA world were volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity is a common setting for any organization. Digital data and information, appliances, information artifacts and any sort of products and applications emerge, more connective due to its digital nature. Even considering different contexts, almost any economic sector, social or work setting was affected by a common digital base. Thus, whatever perspective that we can take on, this digital base made some sort of impact both in the way we work, and organize ourselves. It also alters the ways we interact and support human relationships both as individuals and as organizations. It is expected that such a digital ecosystem enhances and transforms hard skills related with information and communication technologies and the same with information based skills. Not so clear, the same happens to soft skills and the need to address new challenges in how we deal with human activity. In particular, concerning leadership and governance, there is a need to discuss emerging alternatives in a digital ecosystem.

O digital e o modo como este se apropriou do espaço de leitura é atualmente aceite por todos. De facto, lê-se (e escreve-se) cada vez mais, mas em sequências curtas e de forma não estruturada. Neste contexto, a biblioteca enquanto oferta de espaço de leitura deve ser reinventada de modo a aprofundar os tempos e os ritmos de leitura que proporcionem um portal para o encontro do leitor consigo próprio e lhe permita a expansão das narrativas pelo seu próprio intelecto e pensamento (â imagem de um ouvinte e observador, daquilo que o rodeia). Esta proposta de valor para a biblioteca tem potencial para reinventar a biblioteca física e para estender as funcionalidades da biblioteca digital para além da gestão do catálogo e do acesso aos textos, com os naturais benefícios de lidar com o excesso de informação e disrupção das restrições de tempo e espaço (importantes, mas vistos aqui apenas como parte do real potencial). A apresentação partilha uma breve contribuição para um relacionamento entre leitura, o livro a biblioteca (digital ou não) tendo por base um confessado estatuto de amante de livros e da leitura.
