Research Design Proposal
Research Paper Topic-
What our research project is going to be about is the evolution of Shell Shock or PTSD.
We want to know what information we know about PTSD now compared to what we knew
about it in past wars or theories we assumed. We will investigate what PTSD is, and what we
assumed or thought about it in world war 1 up to the current vietnam war. We will also
research what kind of research has been or is going on to advance in the knowledge of PTSD.
What We Know about the Topic at This Point and Why We’re Interested in This Topic-
What we already know about PTSD is that it was once called shell shock and that the
military and doctors assumed that it was because the soldier was close to an explosion but later
we found out that was not the case. The military believe that soldiers who fled and had shell
shock or PTSD were just scared and a shame to the military and were shot. Now a days we
know that PTSD is a mental illness. We are interested in this topic because illness or just the
human mind is very interesting to me and i'd like to find out how this illness works and ways to
help it. I have already learned a lot about PTSD because of mrs. Guyers class and the books
2. we've read and the talks we've had in class. I Am interested in learning a lot more about this
topic and going deeper into the subject.
What We Want To Learn-
What we hope to learn researching this topic is what PTSD is and the symptoms that
come with it.We want to learn if the soldiers act a certain way and how they came to get this
illness. We will research when PTSD started appearing in soldiers and how veterans deal with
the symptoms and if they ever recover. We want to see the ways it used to be treated and the
treatments available today. We want to understand how far weve come with research and
treatment on shell shock/PTSD since it first began.
Our Initial List of Questions We Have About Our Topic-
○ What is PTSD?
○ When did Shellshock begin?
○ What were the first thoughts by the military about Shellshock?
○ What are the symptoms of PTSD?
○ How does PTSD make veterans feel?
○ How has our knowledge of PTSD changed over time?
○ How many veterans/soldiers have PTSD?
○ What are our methods for treating PTSD?
3. ○ How did we treat PTSD in the past?
○ What percent of Veterans have PTSD that did not fight on the front?
○ What else can go along with having PTSD?
Our Three Primary Research Questions-
● What is PTSD?
● What are the Symptoms of PTSD?
● How can we treat PTSD?
Our Research Plan-
Throughout our pre-search process so far, we feel that Gale Opposing Viewpoints is our
main source of information because it has a lot of information and sub-topics underneath our
main topic which is PTSD. We also used Facts on File Video, to find videos that relate to our
topic and we can use later in our Multi-genre final product. We are organizing our information
into a timeline based structure. From articles and information from the past up to current
events. As of right now we plan on using symbaloo to organize all the websites we need to
bookmark and to keep everything organized in one place. For all of our databases, books, and
video citations we are going to be using easybib. Since we are working together on the project
it is essential to have access to all the information each individual finds, so we plan on putting
all our information into a shared google document. This way we will always access no matter
what
4. Content Creation Tools-
For our multi-genre research project we plan on having 3 main questions, and under
each question we will have 2 sub-questions. To answer these sub-questions and questions we
plan on using a variety of different tools to express the research information we find. The tools
we plan on using are as followed: videos, glogster pages, a word jumble, animoto, pictures, and
poems.
Final Learning Product-
Our final product is a multi-genre text, and will all be digital. We feel like it will be the
best way to portray our information and research because it is a medium between our
individual creativity abilities and is a way in which we will enjoy putting everything together. For
our topics and subtopics, we plan on using a shaping sheet to organize all of our information.
